The show is set at the Whitbury New Town Leisure Centre, and features the inept Brittas and his attempts to keep control in spite of his basic total managerial incompetence.

Andrew Norriss and Richard Fegen wrote five series' of the show, which aired in the UK from 1991. At the end of series five, they actually 'killed off' Mr. Brittas when he was crushed beneath a fallen water tank, but the audience reaction was so strong that the BBC commissioned two further series of the show.
Series six and seven were written by a team of several writers, who also wrote the two Christmas specials.

The Leisure Centre has been made ready for a grand opening ceremony, with the ribbon being cut by the Duchess of Kent.
In true "Brittas Empire" fashion, Gordon upsets workmen who then down tools, and this leads to a succession of ever increasing mishaps and disasters which culminates in someone being electrocuted. Unlike many other sitcoms, "The Brittas Empire" writers were quite willing to kill off characters, and there are several deaths in the show over the seven series.
This episode, entitled "The Opening Day", was first broadcast in the UK in January 1991.

Jack Drugett is the local Councillor for Whitbury and spends a lot of time trying to actually prove just how incompetent Brittas is, so he can have him fired from the leisure centre.
Councillor Drugett is played by Stephen Churchett, who, as well as numerous appearances on television in the UK over the years, has also written for shows including "The Bill", "Lewis", and "Hornblower".

Gavin, played by Tim Marriott, eventually phones one of his workmates thus letting them know he is in fact alive. He claims to have been kidnapped and held captive by pirates.
The episode was first shown on UK television in 1997.

One of Councillor Drugett's plans to get rid of Mr. Brittas involved getting him a cushy job in Brussels, Belgium. The first three episodes of series five (first shown in 1994 in the UK) have the 'Brussels job' as their theme, and it is episode three "Brussels Calling" that has scenes set there.

There were seven series' of the show made, and two Christmas Specials. It ran from 1991 until 1997, in the UK.
Many fans were critical of the way the show ended, when Gordon "woke up" and the entire show turned out to have been a dream he had after being knocked unconscious on the way to his interview for a position as manager of a leisure centre.
The storyline also conflicted with that of the 1994 Christmas special.
