Answer: Peter

Peter Engel (played by Chad Willett) was an ASCAN as part of the Teacher in Space program. When giving schoolchildren a tour of the cape just before a launch, liftoff had to be delayed when Peter lost a student. After graduation, Peter flew a shuttle mission during which he conducted teaching lessons from space.

D.B.'s father, Congressman Bud Woods, was a former astronaut. Congressman Woods arrived at the Cape and revealed his plans to cut funding for manned missions. D.B. couldn't believe that his father would do something that would ruin D.B.'s career. D.B. was a genius at calculating orbital mechanics and crunching pretty much any numbers necessary. Col. Jack Riles (Adam Baldwin) received a visit from a former girlfriend, Joanna, who brought someone with her. Joanna introduced Jack to his son, Noah. Joanna was a photographer who had an assignment in Bosnia, and wanted to leave Noah with Jack while she was gone. Jack and Noah eventually bonded, resulting in Jack asking Joanna for shared custody after she returned to pick Noah up.

Due to budget cuts, Bull, Jack and Reggie were forced to select one of the astronaut candidates to drop from the program shortly before graduation. After Capt. Zeke Beaumont (Cameron Bancroft) was selected, he briefly considered going back to the Air Force, but decided not to. Zeke had moved out of his apartment and was leaving town when he heard on the news that NASA was looking for him to operate the RMS on a shuttle rescue mission. Zeke had previously shown his proficiency with the remote arm on a prior mission, and had been requested by Bull to be on the rescue mission. Bull was currently commanding the shuttle Atlantis, which had lost several heat tiles in a collision with the solar array on the Mir space station in the series finale. In light of the tragedy that happened to the real space shuttle Columbia in February 2003, it is ironic that the orbiter used in the storyline to bring the crew that performed the tile replacements was the shuttle Columbia.

Andrea Wyler (Katie Mitchell) was the Chief Public Affairs Officer who always seemed to have her hands full fielding questions from the media about one crisis or another at NASA. After Bull and his wife were separated, he and Andrea got together.

Lt. Cmdr. Barbara DeSantos (Bobbie Phillips) was a Navy pilot in the ASCAN program. She and Reggie were attracted to each other, and had a brief affair. Reggie was worried how it would look to his superiors since he was one of the ASCAN instructors, and had yet to fly his first mission.

After an argument with Reggie, Barbara was involved in a motorcycle accident which left her briefly in a coma. It took her some time to prove that she was healthy so she could regain her flight status.

Maj. Reggie Warren (Bobby Hosea) was accused of a hit-and-run accident by some local boys. Eventually one of the boys had an attack of conscience and came clean to the authorities about what really happened, clearing Reggie's name. Reggie's first mission on a shuttle turned into "Reggie's Wild Ride", when everyone on the shuttle was overcome by fumes released during an onboard experiment, and Reggie was the only one left to land the orbiter.

Mission specialist Tamara St. James (Tyra Ferrell) was a biochemist. On a mission, fellow astronaut Caitlin suffered a collapsed lung, forcing Tamara to perform surgery, in the episode "No Fear". Tamara's husband, Allan, was an engineer who took a job in California, putting a strain on their marriage.

Col. Henry "Bull" Eckert (Corbin Bernsen) was also an astronaut still flying missions in addition to being in charge of training. The NASA life, and Bull's devotion to his work, became too much for Bull's wife, Ellen, so she left with their two children.

The Moonshot Bar & Grill was owned by Sweets (Whitman Mayo), and had been open since the Mercury days. Reggie, Barbara, Zeke, Peter and D.B. are stranded at the Moonshot during the episode "Hurricane", after Hurricane Elena washes away the pier leading from the shore to the bar.
