"The Hostile Hospital: Part One" Quiz

Sometimes you can't see the truth if it's staring you right in the face, but just maybe you'll see that it's not worth it to watch the first part of "The Hostile Hospital" as the Baudelaires experience in "A Series of Unfortunate Events".

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What vehicle did the Baudelaires use to travel through the hinterlands?

Answer: Fire engine

"For Beatrice-- Summer without you is as cold as Winter. Winter without you is even colder."

The narrator, Lemony Snicket, informs the viewers that he is taking apart his things because he is now 'on the lam', a phrase which, here, means he is 'conveying this information about the Baudelaires' story while being pursued relentlessly by the law'. Being on the lam is an uncomfortable way to live, not unlike being squeezed into a tight box and tossed at high speed from a moving vehicle. The Baudelaires, too, are on the lam. As their fire engine sputters to a halt, now out of gas, they proceed on foot in search of fuel, deep in the hinterlands. Snicket begs the viewer to look away. It may be the last chance.
2. The Baudelaires try to contact Mulctuary Money Management via which means at the Last Chance General Store?

Answer: Telegraph

The Baudelaires, traveling on foot, end up arriving at the Last Chance General Store in the hinterlands to find that there's no gas and no phone service. Additionally, the new edition of the Daily Punctilio has their mugshots on the front. The children head inside the general store anyways, hoping to use their functional telegraph machine to send a message to Mulctuary Money Management, perhaps so that Mr. Poe's secretary can receive it.

The message is cut short, however, since Count Olaf arrives and chases them through the store, forcing them to run out the back.

They end up escaping in a volunteer band labeled V.F.D.
3. The Baudelaires hop into a V.F.D. vehicle heading to Heimlich Hospital. It contains volunteers. What are they fighting?

Answer: Disease

Count Olaf watches the Baudelaires' getaway vehicle leave down the road and reasons that they could only be going to one place: Heimlich Hospital. That's fortunate, according to Esme, since it also happens to be the location of the Sugar Bowl, as Olivia said. Olaf believes that the orphans must be on their way there to nab it before them, so this obviously constitutes a trip there. Since Count Olaf was declared dead and the Baudelaires are on the lam, it's the perfect opportunity. The Baudelaires, meanwhile, are met by some extremely happy V.F.D. people who, introducing themselves, sing a merry tune about being Volunteers Fighting Disease.

The children think they have the wrong V.F.D., but that's not a big deal; according to the group leader, they can visit the Library of Records at Heimlich Hospital and, hopefully, find out a bit more about what they're looking for.
4. What do the V.F.D. singers give to patients at Heimlich Hospital?

Answer: Heart-shaped balloons

Count Olaf and his henchmen arrive at Heimlich Hospital right behind the Baudelaires and immediately get to work procuring disguises from a laundry truck. The Baudelaires don't notice because they're immediately brought into the hospital by their candy-striping friends and given heart-shaped balloons to hand out. Once inside, the children branch off and search for the Library of Records instead, eventually finding it closed.

They realize that it'll be hard for them to gain access since nearly everyone has likely read the Daily Punctilio, but that doesn't seem to be a problem since the record-keeper, Hal, does not seem to have great eyesight.

He lets them in when they explain that they're volunteers, there to help.
5. What, according to workers at Heimlich Hospital, makes the world go 'round?

Answer: Paperwork

Olaf and his henchmen head into Heimlich Hospital disguised as doctors, nurses, and interns and come face-to-face with the head of human resources, Babs, who doesn't know Olaf's fake name-- Mattathias Medicalschool-- since it's not on the records. She seems to have a panic attack when this happens, but they all reason it must be a paperwork mistake. Paperwork, however (according to Babs), makes the world go 'round, so Olaf is allowed to enter, but only after filling out numerous forms. The same sentiment is held in the Library of Records when Hal shows the Baudelaires around.

Heimlich Hospital, he explains, is more about paperwork than helping sick people. You couldn't do anything in a hospital without special forms. Hal says there's no safer place for records than at Heimlich; people from around the world send their paperwork there. And it's all kept under lock and key. And it's not for reading; it's for filing.
6. According to Hal, a file about the weather at Damocles Dock could reasonably be filed under which of these letters?

Answer: All of these are viable letters for filing

Count Olaf and his henchmen theorize that the children are likely in the Library of Records (and they're not wrong) and Esme demands they go there to search for the Sugar Bowl. Olaf does go in, but Hal informs him that he needs to file an application to view the files, so it's a short visit.

In the meantime, the children get to work learning the filing system in the Library of Records, quickly determining that there is no hard-and-fast system in place, even though Hal explains that there are strict rules.

A file about weather at Damocles Dock could end up under W for weather or D for Damocles or L for Last Week. When a film canister about Snicket comes down the file chute, he tells the children that there is a very specific place for files of that nature and he goes off to deal with it.

There's no time to look into the files anyways; even if they could with proper clearance, the Library of Records closes for the day due to severe budget cuts.
7. In which part of the hospital are there no security cameras?

Answer: The unfinished wing

Olaf and his henchmen decide that the best way to deal with their lack of clearance in the hospital is to scare Babs, the Human Resources Manager, to death. They create some creepy hallway scenarios using their acting techniques and push Babs into panic attack mode before pulling her into an elevator and and forcing her to retire on the PA system. Olaf and Esme immediately take over and announce that there are murderers in the hospital.

There's a bit of infighting there too since Esme is so dead-set on finding the Sugar Bowl, so she heads off alone.

The Baudelaires think fast since they're already wandering the halls and they decide that they will need to hide in the unfinished wing of the hospital where there are no surveillance cameras.

They end up spending the night sleeping unsafely in the framework of the new wing.
8. Hal brings the children which of these meals while they wait out the night?

Answer: Chicken soup

While the bed searches continue through the night, the Baudelaires ponder as to how they could get what they need and escape Heimlich Hospital, and the only reasonable option they have puts them in a moral dilemma. On Sunny's idea, they consider breaking into the Library of Records, but to do that they need to steal the keys from Hal. Coincidentally, Hal is there to serve the children some chicken soup, winding across the beams and boards of the construction tower with his poor vision to do so.

The children talk about their parents while Hal asks about them. He tells them that, fortunately, there will always be helpful people there to shine a light on them so that they, in turn, can shine a light for others.
9. Who admits to stealing the Sugar Bowl from Esme Squalor?

Answer: Lemony Snicket

When Hal falls asleep under the stars, the Baudelaires, still worried about their moral quandary, realize that they must steal his keys to preserve themselves. They don't know that their necessary act will lead to something very unfortunate in the Library of Records, and as our narrator states, he didn't know it would have been caused by a string of events that sparked when he helped steal the Sugar Bowl from Esme Squalor. Nevertheless, the children swap out Hal's keys as he wakes up and commends them for being trustworthy and he heads to bed none the wiser.

They head to the Library of Records while Esme, now donning a more villainous outfit complete with stiletto heels, stalks down the halls to intercept them and search for her missing Sugar Bowl.
10. Who is captured when trying to escape the Library of Records?

Answer: Violet

As the children start searching the files for Jacques Snicket's information (which isn't under 'Snicket' or 'Jacques'), they eventually seek out the files for V.F.D., finding the film reel they need. The film reel depicts Jacques and his official debriefing and before they know it, they discover that someone may have very well survived the fire at the Baudelaire Mansion.

This revelation is interrupted by Esme though as, after trying every key, she's finally made it into the library. This culminates in a chase through the filing cabinets where Klaus and Sunny head for the door and Violet races back to claim the film reel.

They all try to escape through an outbound chute, but only Klaus and Sunny are able to make it through before Esme blocks it off. Fortunately, Violet is able to get the film reel in as well before Esme can approach.

Unfortunately, Violet, racing on to an unblocked exit, is caught out by Count Olaf and pulled into the hall. Klaus and Sunny can do nothing but watch as their sister is taken.
