Gavin makes his first appearance in season 7, episode 2, "The Well". He is a member of the Saviors, which is lead by the villain Negan. No information is given about how he came to join the group, but he seems to be one of its more level-headed members.

When Gavin comes to abduct Ezekiel at Negan's behest, Ezekiel tries to talk him out of going through with it. Gavin seems conflicted about doing it and expresses a wish that matters hadn't come to this. Once Gavin's crew is killed and he is disarmed, Morgan prepares to kill Gavin. Carol, however, tries to talk Morgan down.

She says, "You told me we can be better than them. You said that to me." She assures Morgan, "I know you don't want to do this. I can see it." Morgan, however, replies, "I have to."

Carol fails to talk Morgan out of trying to kill Gavin. Morgan raises his staff to strike the man, but before he can, Gavin is stabbed through the back of the neck with a pointed staff by young Henry. This scene occurs in season 8, episode 9, "Honor". Henry blames Gavin for being complicit in his brother Benjamin's death.

When Gavin orders Jared to shoot Richard in the leg as punishment for the Kingdom not paying the full tribute, Jared turns his gun on Benjamin instead. It was a large outpost with around sixty Saviors located in an old chemical manufacturing plant.
