Rick chained Merle to a pipe on the roof of a building after Merle tried to take over the group. T-Dog accidentally dropped the handcuff key down a drain. They left Merle on the roof and secured the door so the walkers wouldn't get to him. Merle escaped by sawing off his own hand. He later replaced it with a blade which he used as a weapon.

He cuts her loose and lets her go, saying, "There's something I got to do." He then goes on to ambush the Governor. Though he does not succeed, he takes out several of the Governor's men. "He gave us a chance," Carol tells Daryl.

Daryl tries to get Glenn to forgive Merle, but Glenn refuses, saying, "He tied me to a chair, beat me, and threw a walker in the room. Maybe I can call it even but he...He took Maggie to a man who terrorized her! Humiliated her! I care more about her than I care about me!"

The exchange occurs in a deleted scene, which is available to view on the season 3 Blu-Ray. After Merle joins them in the prison, Carol brings him a tray of food. She begins talking to him sweetly and innocently, with a smile on her face. She then threatens him, "I'm trying to play nice.

But if you screw this up, mess with Daryl, I will slit your throat while you sleep." At the conclusion of her calm threat, she stands and tells him, "Enjoy your food." Merle is impressed with Carol's transformation and later tells her, "You're not like you were."
