Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sheldon Cooper often points out that he is from East Texas, but in which city was he born?

Answer: Galveston

Sheldon, along with his twin sister Missy, was born in February 1980 in a K-Mart in Galveston, before being taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Sheldon's mother Mary is an evangelical Christian housewife, while his father, George Sr, worked as a football coach at the high school attended by his sons George Jr and Sheldon.
2. Sheldon displayed intellectual gifts at an early age, and had a keen interest in the sciences. Which member of his family was the only one to actively encourage this passion?

Answer: Grandfather

Sheldon has described his maternal grandfather, who he called "Pop-Pop", as the only person in his family to support him in his pursuit of science. Pop-Pop died when Sheldon was five years old, which led him to ask Santa Claus to bring him back for Christmas.

When this proved impossible, Sheldon developed a long-lasting hatred of the holidays and Santa. However as he gets older, he comes to tolerate Christmas traditions, including the exchange of gifts and trimming the tree (although he prefers it be done how he likes it).
3. At the age of nine, Sheldon wrote an unpublished paper entitled "Rocket Reentry and Retropropulsion" in his composition notebook that solved the problem of Vertical Takeoff, Vertical Landing for rockets. Which entrepreneur secretly employed Sheldon's conclusions years later?

Answer: Elon Musk

Sheldon wrote his paper as a response to the patronisation he had suffered from a representative of NASA who came to speak at Sheldon's high school. To prove his genius, Sheldon worked out how to solve the difficulties of getting a rocket to be able to land vertically.

Sheldon's work was subsequently appropriated by the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who used the conclusions to perfect the techniques of vertical landing on his SpaceX rocket.
4. Sheldon graduated from high school at the age of 11, and completed his undergraduate degree aged 14, after which he went to Caltech to do doctoral work. While there, aged 15 he spent time as a visiting professor at which German university?

Answer: University of Heidelberg

In spite of Sheldon's eidetic memory and ability to absorb information, he picked up very little German during his time in Heidelberg. For instance, during a period of illness, his residence's housekeeper offered assistance by asking "Möchtest du eine Darmspülung?", the meaning of which Sheldon only gleaned by what subsequently happened.
5. In 2003, Sheldon advertises for a new roommate, and receives a response from experimental physicist Leonard Hofstadter. When Leonard first comes to view the apartment, Sheldon informs him that he needs to pass a number of barriers to "roommatehood". How many barriers are there?

Answer: Three

The first barrier is at the front door, when Sheldon asks what the sixth noble gas is, and whether Kirk or Picard is better. Leonard's answers allow him to pass the first barrier and enter the apartment, whereupon he faces the second barrier. This is a series of questions relating to Leonard's area of study, willingness to drive Sheldon to work and what Leonard thinks is the most important task in a hypothetical post-apocalyptic world. Upon successfully passing this barrier, Leonard is permitted to view the remainder of the apartment, and is met with the third and final barrier, which is the question of how regular his bowel movements are. With an acceptable response to Sheldon, Leonard is finally allowed to see his room.
6. Sheldon's neighbour Penny is often the individual left to look after him when he is sick. While there are a number of things that Sheldon requires when he isn't well, one of the main ones is that Penny sings him "Soft Kitty". What is Penny doing when Sheldon first teaches her the song?

Answer: Applying vaporub to his chest

"Soft Kitty" is a childhood song that Sheldon is extremely fond of, which his mother would sing him when he was sick. Overall, the song is heard either sung to Sheldon or by Sheldon to other people in eight episodes of "The Big Bang Theory". In 2015 a lawsuit was filed by the heirs of Edith Newlin, who wrote the original words to "Warm Kitty", which was adapted into "Soft Kitty".

Although the suit was dismissed, the song was not used in "The Big Bang Theory" after season 8, and was only reintroduced in Season 1 of "Young Sheldon".
7. Although Sheldon saw his relationship with Amy Farrah Fowler as being one "of the mind", he experiences an unfamiliar sensation when Amy agrees to go on a date with whom?

Answer: Stuart

Amy and Stuart are in a cinema when Sheldon arrives and reveals to Amy that he would like to alter the paradigm of their relationship and that on the understanding that nothing changes whatsoever, physical or otherwise, he would not object to them no longer characterizing Amy as not his girlfriend.

When Amy suggests he try saying this without a quadruple negative, Sheldon asks "Amy, will you be my girlfriend?".
8. One of Sheldon's great heroes is Professor Stephen Hawking, and Sheldon is awed by the prospect of meeting him. When Hawking goes to Caltech to lecture, Sheldon is given the opportunity to meet the professor, but who arranges this for him?

Answer: Mr Wolowitz

When Hawking comes to Caltech, he requires an engineer to help maintain the equipment on his wheelchair, and Howard Wolowitz is given the task. In this position, Howard feels a sense of power over Sheldon, who is desperate to meet Hawking and have him read a copy of his latest paper, and subsequently has Sheldon undertake a range of demeaning tasks, including:

- Polishing all of Howard's belt buckles
- Wearing a French maid's outfit in the university cafeteria
- Doing Howard's laundry (including his leopard-print underwear)
- Taking Howard's mother dress shopping
- Complimenting Howard on his job

Sheldon eventually meets Hawking, who finds Sheldon's paper intriguing but points out that there is a mathematical error. Upon realising this, Sheldon faints.
9. After twenty years of work on string theory, Sheldon is no closer to a breakthrough, and decides to turn his attention to another area of study. What is his new topic?

Answer: Dark matter

The possibility that nothing can be proven in relation to string theory worries Sheldon, and he hopes that dark matter may be a more productive focus for his research. However, the terms of his grant with the university mean that he is required to study string theory. To get around this, the university offers to make Sheldon a junior professor, meaning he can choose his own area of research in return for teaching a class.
10. Sheldon eventually achieves his life's ambition by winning the Nobel Prize in Physics alongside his wife Amy. Upon receiving the news in the small hours of the morning, Sheldon worries he may be dreaming. Who slaps Sheldon around the face to convince him otherwise?

Answer: Leonard

While waiting for the news from the Nobel Committee, Sheldon gives instructions that, if he falls asleep, someone should slap him awake. Leonard decides that he has earned the right to do this, despite Amy's apparent wish to do so, pointing out that Amy has a lifetime in which to slap Sheldon.

While Leonard is poised to deliver the blow, the phone wakes Sheldon and the opportunity appears lost. However, Sheldon's incredulity at the news presents another chance for Leonard who takes it gleefully.
