Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In episode 1, in the 'RAF Song' what comes after the lyrics: "Mustered all our courage, in..."?

Answer: Summer 1940

It is sung by Mat Baynton. The song occurs at the end of episode one, and features all five of the main actors in 'Horrible Histories'.
2. In the 'Shocking Scotland' song, talking about the Stuarts' bad luck, King Robert III sings: "Let's start with me, King Robert three, some say I was a..." what?

Answer: Fool

King Robert is played by Ben Willbond. They say that he was a fool because he was "Once thrown off a horse and hurt himself, quite badly, how uncool..."
3. The 'Luddites' in episode 8, "Met in the hills and planned to smash their..." What?

Answer: Weaving machines of gloom

The Luddites were rebels during the industrial revolution, who rioted against the new machines as their jobs were being taken by it.

Jim Howick and Mat Baynton are the chief singers of this one, and I believe Jim is doing a Johnny Rotten impression, as the song has a heavy punk feeling.
4. In 'The Borgia Family', Rodrigo Borgia has four children, sung as: "Lucrezia, Giovanni, Gioffre and..." Who?

Answer: Cesare

This is one of only two sketches in which the Borgias appear. Rodrigo Borgia, (otherwise known as Pope Alexander VI,) had four children and a girlfriend, which was strictly against the rules of the church.

In the other sketch, whilst Rodrigo is talking to a young Deacon, Rodrigo says: "I cleared it."
"With who?"
"Pope Alexander VI."
"But you are Pope Alexander VI."
"Exactly, and I say, it's fine..."

Jim Howick plays Rodrigo Borgia in both sketches.
5. What, according to the song, trends and traditions did Victoria and Albert set?

Answer: Christmas trees, wearing Tartan with style

Yes, Queen Victoria was the first person to put presents under the Christmas tree, and of course, "Albert backed the great exhibition," which is said to have been what made Albert popular in England.

The song has Martha Howe-Douglas as Queen Victoria and Jim Howick as Albert.
6. Charles Darwin sings: "On the Isles of Galapagos, I noted the..." What?

Answer: Giant tortoise

This is another one sung by Mat Baynton! He is featured dancing with a gorilla, which is actually Jim Howick dressed up as a gorilla.

Charles Darwin is of course famous for his theory of evolution and his belief that we are descended from apes.
7. In the song 'Mary', she sings: "Married Philip, King of..." Where?

Answer: Spain

Yes, she married Philip of Spain who didn't really like her. He married her as a way to get at the English throne, but he was in Spain for so much of the time, the throne went straight to her half sister, Queen Elizabeth I.

Mary is played by Sarah Hadland.
8. In the Pilgrim Fathers' song, what word completes this line? "Man called Squanto showed us how to grow..."

Answer: Maize

The Pilgrim Fathers were desperate for food when they arrived, as the song says: "Though William Mullins had stacked, 126 pairs of shoes in his pack!"
They didn't exactly think out their priorities.

The main rap is done by Mat Baynton, backed up by Ben Willbond and Larry Rickard.
9. In the 'Greek Thinkers' song, what does Aristotle say he had discovered?

Answer: Water, ether, earth, air and fire

Aristotle says: "I took all their theories higher, dicovered water, ether, earth, air and fire, learned every science, I'm Mister know it all!"
The song features four of the greatest Greek philosephers: Aristotle (Mat Baynton), Socrates (Ben Willbond), Diogenes (Larry Rickard) and Plato (Jim Howick).

For anyone interested, in BBC's 'Sherlock' the name of Mycroft's club is also the Diogenes club. Coincidence?
10. Which actor, in the 'Georgian Navy' song, says "Magic Sponge"?

Answer: Larry Rickard

Sorry if that one was a bit hard. All of those actors are in that one, Jim Howick is playing Nelson. Mat Baynton says: "Half time orange anyone?", and Simon Farnaby says: "Magic saw!" in response to "Magic sponge?"
