Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Keeping Up Appearances" - The apple of his mother Hyacinth Bucket's eye (it's pronounced "Bouquet"), Sheridan Bucket, is studying Tapestry Design and Advanced Needlework at "the Poly", but with whom does he share a room at college?

Answer: Tarquin

In "Keeping Up Appearances", our most frequent contact with Sheridan Bucket comes when he telephones his parents, usually speaking to his mother. As Sheridan is never seen or heard, we only ever hear Hyacinth's side of the conversation, which often leads to Sheridan asking for money.

This is often as a result of Sheridan wanting to imitate his roommate Tarquin in some way. While nothing is ever said about the nature of Sheridan and Tarquin's relationship, in one conversation with Hyacinth, Sheridan mentions that neither of them are interested in girls, which Hyacinth takes as "a comfort to a mother's heart".
2. "Frasier" - Maris Crane, the ex-wife and constant bane of Dr Niles Crane, is a doyenne of society in Seattle, whose family is incredibly wealthy. However, although it is believed that the family fortune was made in timber, what does Niles eventually learn that it was actually from?

Answer: Urinal cakes

Although she is never seen, we often hear descriptions of her from other characters, allowing a picture of her to develop - she is small, extremely pale and incredibly thin, to the extent that she failed to set off a whoopee cushion upon sitting on one; she has abnormally tight quadriceps, a rigid spine, slightly webbed hands that she is self-conscious about, and is unable to produce saliva.

She also undergoes frequent plastic surgeries, and other eccentric health treatments.
3. "The Big Bang Theory" - Debbie Wolowitz, the overbearing and smothering yet caring and welcoming mother of Howard Wolowitz, is a character that, despite being unseen, is rarely unheard. Who provides the distinctive voice of the Wolowitz matriarch?

Answer: Carol Ann Susi

The voice of Mrs Wolowitz can be heard in 40 episodes out of the total of 279 during the run of "The Big Bang Theory". Following Carol Ann Susi's death in 2014, the writers decided that Mrs Wolowitz would not be recast, and had the character pass away during a trip to Florida in the season 8 episode "The Comic Book Store Regeneration".

However, the character made a final appearance in season 11's "The Bitcoin Entanglement" during a flashback, when archive audio of Carol Ann Susi was used.
4. "Dad's Army" - Although Mrs Elizabeth Mainwaring, the wife of Captain Mainwaring, rarely ventures out of their residence, where does she insist she and her husband sleep?

Answer: Anderson Shelter

When spending the night in the Anderson Shelter, a type of air raid shelter built using corrugated steel panels in domestic gardens, the Mainwarings sleep in a set of bunk beds, with Mrs Mainwaring always taking the top bunk. From the significant sagging of her mattress, we gain an idea of her appearance.

However, although the character was unseen in the 80 episodes of "Dad's Army", she did appear in the 2016 film version, played by Felicity Montagu.
5. "Open All Hours" - Arkwright, the miserly shopkeeper, harbours a burning passion for Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, to whom he is engaged. However, Gladys refuses to marry him while the unseen relative with whom she shares her house depends upon her. Who is this relative?

Answer: Her mother

While Gladys Emmanuel is fond of Arkwright (in spite of his penny pinching) and wants to marry him, she refuses to do so while her apparently invalided mother requires her care. This is a constant source of frustration to Arkwright, who often imagines of "favourable circumstances, happier times, like when her mother dies".

In the sequel series, "Still Open All Hours", we learn that, although Gladys's mother did eventually pass on, she never did get round to marrying Arkwright before he died too.
6. "Rhoda" - Carlton the Doorman, played by actor Lorenzo Music, was a character that was heard but never seen. Music voiced a large number of characters during his career, but is perhaps most famous for voicing which anthropomorphic animated cat?

Answer: Garfield

Although Garfield made his first animated appearance in a 1980 special called "Fabulous Funnies" voiced by Scott Beach, it was in the character's first solo special, "Here Comes Garfield" in 1982, that Music first provided his voice, continuing to do so in a number of specials, a TV series and video games up to his death in 2001. Lorenzo Music also provided the voice of Dr Peter Venkman in the animated series "The Real Ghostbusters"; the actor Bill Murray, who originally played Venkman in the 1984 live-action movie, was subsequently cast as the voice of Garfield in two theatrical releases in 2004 and 2006.
7. "Charlie's Angels" - Charlie Townsend famously delivered instructions to his three "angels" via a speakerphone. Charlie's face was never seen, but his voice was provided by actor John Forsythe. However, Forsythe was not the first choice for the role - which Academy Award winner was producer Aaron Spelling's original selection to play Charlie?

Answer: Gig Young

Although Gig Young was the original choice to play Charlie, by the mid-1970s he was already suffering badly from alcoholism (which had already led to him being replaced in a number of roles, including as The Waco Kid in the film "Blazing Saddles") and, as a result of him being unable to read his lines in the original recording session for the pilot episode, producer Aaron Spelling called John Forsythe late one night to come and perform. Forsythe immediately obliged, rising from his bed, putting an overcoat over his pyjamas, going to record the lines, and then immediately returning home to bed. Forsythe played Charlie in all but one episode of the series, as well as two spin-off movies in the 2000s.
8. "Father Ted" - Throughout the three series of "Father Ted", a priest named Father Bigley is frequently mentioned, including inference that he is 'unbalanced'. He lives 'in a home' because of what from his past?

Answer: Suspicious incidents involving fires

Although we never see Father Bigley, we hear numerous descriptions of him, including puffy fish lips bigger than the rest of his face, facial blotches, and an inability to waggle his ears. Father Bigley is an avid fan of the Irish singer Dana, and officiated at OJ Simpson's wedding.
9. "Mork and Mindy" - At the end of each episode, Mork from the planet Ork would report back to his superiors on the aspects of humanity that he had most recently learned about. These reports were delivered to his unseen supervisor, but what was his name?

Answer: Orson

Mork knows Orson personally and sometimes makes derogatory remarks about Orson's weight. However, their relationship appears amicable, to the extent that Mork asks Orson to be the godfather of his son Mearth. Prior to this, Mork had sought Orson's permission to marry Mindy and Orson agreed because he felt it would further understanding of 'Earth traditions'. Orson learns much about human emotion via Mork's experiences, and is grateful to Mork for this education.
10. "Magnum, PI" - Robin Masters is the owner of an estate on the island of Oahu in Hawaii, who employs Thomas Magnum as a security expert. But what does Robin Masters do to earn his lucrative living?

Answer: Novelist

In the early episodes of "Magnum, PI", Robin Masters made occasional voice appearances, with his voice provided by the actor Orson Welles. After Welles's death in 1985, the writers of the show, rather than recasting the voice role, instead began teasing out a new storyline in which Magnum began to believe that Jonathan Higgins, the caretaker of the Masters estate, was in reality Robin Masters.

This was never confirmed or denied during the course of the show's run - in the final episode, Higgins appeared to confirm that he was Masters, before later retracting this confirmation.
