Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Q-themed episodes is NOT from "Star Trek: Voyager"?

Answer: True Q

"Death Wish" featured a member of the Q Continuum (Gerrit Graham) who no longer wished to be a part of it. "The Q and the Grey" centered around a conflict within the Continuum (depicted as a battle in the U.S. Civil War). And "Q2" introduced us to Q's child (Keegan De Lancie, John's son).
"True Q" was a "TNG" episode about a young woman named Amanda Rogers (Olivia d'Abo), the discovery that she is a Q, and her struggle to decide whether to embrace her true heritage.
2. B-4 was constructed by Dr. Noonien Soong.

Answer: True

In "Star Trek: Nemesis", La Forge explained to Data, Picard and Riker that B-4's internal mechanics were similar to Data's, but the positronic matrix was not as developed. With that, he deduced that B-4 was a prototype Soong andriod. Support for this cliam comes from the "TNG" episode "Inheritance", in which Soong's ex-wife, Juliana Tainer (who really is a sophisticated android based on the real Juliana), told Data of several prototypes that had to be deactivated before Lore and Data were created.
3. What is the Borg species designation of humans?

Answer: Species 5618

All of these designations were established on "Star Trek: Voyager". In the episode "Dark Frontier, Part II", humans were designated Species 5618 and the Ktarians were Species 6961. In "Equinox, Part II", we learned that the Borg regarded Yridians as Species 6291. And Vulcans were Species 3259, according to "The Raven".
4. The distinctive Saurian brandy bottles featured in "TOS" were really commemorative bottles issued by Seagram's.

Answer: False

No, they were from the George Dickel Distillery. In 1958, Dickel re-opened its facility in Tennessee after recovering from Prohibition (yes, it took 25 years). To mark the occasion, they bottled their whisky (note the lack of "e" in the spelling) in a special bottle with a crooked neck.

The prop department for "Star Trek" took some of these bottles, added a leather strap down the side and painted the trim red, and the Saurian brandy bottle was born! The bottle seen in Quark's on "DS9" is a replica of the original props. By the way, the 1958 commemorative bottle is a highly-sought collectible.

Some "Star Trek" fans have even fashioned their own versions of Saurian brandy bottles from them!
5. In the "TNG" episode "The First Duty", what was the name of the Starfleet cadet who was killed while Nova Squadron attempted a Korvoold Starburst?

Answer: Joshua Albert

Initially, Nova Squadron's leader, Nicholas Locarno (Robert Duncan MacNeill), asked the surviving members of his team (including Wesley Crusher) to cover up the accident by claiming Josh Albert panicked while flying in close formation. Academy Commandant Admiral Brand was unsatisfied with the provided testimony at the hearing, but there was nothing she could do without concrete evidence. Captain Picard, however, was able to deduce that Nova Squadron had attempted the Starburst maneuver and he gave Wesley a dressing-down about it. And it was Wesley who finally stood up and revealed the truth.
6. What does VISOR stand for?

Answer: Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement

Geordi La Forge, who was born blind, got his first VISOR when he was a child, after he was trapped in a fire for a few minutes before he was rescued. The VISOR he used while serving on the Enterprise-D allowed him to see nearly all of the known light spectrum, including infrared, ultra-violet, visible light, and even radio waves.

He was also able to use his VISOR to discern stress on structures and pulse rates on people. By the time he began his tour of duty on the Enterprise-E, the VISOR had been replaced with occular implants that more closely resembled normal eyes (Information from the "Star Trek Encyclopedia" and startrek.com). This is just an observation, but I call the first three "TNG" cast movies "The evolution of Geordi's eyes." In "Generations", he had the VISOR. "First Contact" saw the debut of the occular implants. And in "Insurrection", Geordi's eyes were normal (at least temporarily) after spending time on the Ba'ku homeworld.
7. On "Deep Space Nine", we were introduced to the woman who would become Captain Sisko's love interest, Kasidy Yates (Penny Johnson), a cargo ship captain. What was the name of her ship?

Answer: S.S. Xhosa

Sisko first met Kasidy Yates in "Family Business". Later, in the episode "For the Cause", Sisko discovered that Kasidy was hauling supplies to the Maquis. By this time, the two had formed a relationship together, and this seriously complicated matters. But she answered for her crime, did her time, and Sisko took her back and married her.
8. The "TNG" second season finale, "Shades of Grey", is the only "clip show" episode in the history of "Star Trek". Why?

Answer: A writers' strike shortened the season

In 1989, a screenwriters' strike all but shut down television production throughout the industry, and "Star Trek" was no exception. Seasons 1, 3, 4, and 5 of "The Next Generation" had 26 episodes each. But Season 2 had only 22 episodes, of which 20 had completed scripts prior to the strike.

In order to attempt to squeeze in any resemblance to a full season, an old "Phase II" script, "The Child", was adapted for "The Next Generation", and "Shades of Grey" was hashed together. NOTE -- Technically, the "TOS" two-parter "The Menagerie" can also be considered a "clip show" episode, as it incorporates the original pilot, "The Cage" with new footage.

But "The Cage" never aired on TV until the SciFi Channel picked up "Star Trek" in 1998, therefore "The Menagerie" is officially considered a clever "bookend" episode.
9. What is Captain Sisko's father's first name?

Answer: Joseph

Joseph Sisko (Brock Peters) was introduced in the "DS9" episode "Homefront". He ran a Creole restaurant in New Orleans, and he taught Benjamin how to cook some of his famous recipes; as a result, Ben Sisko's reputation as a cook was well-known on Deep Space Nine.
10. What was the name of the abandoned Cardassian space station that resembled Deep Space Nine?

Answer: Empok Nor

Introduced in the episode that bares the station's name, Empok Nor was nearly identical to Deep Space Nine (formerly known as Terok Nor). Members of DS9's crew went to Empok Nor to acquire needed replacement parts. Empok Nor was also featured in "The Magnificent Ferengi", and it was used as Gul Dukat's base while he was under the influence of the Pah Wraiths.
11. Which of the following species did the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager encounter first?

Answer: Baneans

Introduced in "Ex Post Facto" (Episode 8), the Baneans had convicted Tom Paris (Robert Duncan MacNeill) of murder. The sentence, according to Banean law, was for Paris to relive the murder through the victim's eyes every 14 hours via a memory implant. This episode also marked the first meeting with the Numiri, with whom the Baneans were at war.
The Vok'sha appeared in "Heroes and Demons" (Episode 12), the Bothan in "Persistence of Vision" (Episode 24), and the Mokra in "Resistance" (Episode 28).
12. In the "TOS" episode "The Ultimate Computer", which of the four starships engaged in war games against the Enterprise was destroyed by the M-5 Computer?

Answer: U.S.S. Excalibur (NCC-1664)

Initially, the M-5 proved a tremendous success, until it went haywire and attacked the four "enemy" ships, thinking the Starfleet vessels were on a real-world mission to destroy the Enterprise. When the four ships began the battle simulation, M-5 retaliated by destroying the Excalibur (all hands were lost) and crippling the Potemkin.
13. What was the Noh-Jay Consortium?

Answer: A brief business partnership between Jake Sisko and Nog

In the "DS9" episode "Progress", Nog and Jake Sisko took a shipment of yamok sauce (a Cardassian garnish) of Quark's hands and traded it for 100 gross of self-sealing stem bolts. Then, introducing themselves as the Noh-Jay Consortium, they acquired a plot of land on Bajor in exchange for the stem bolts. Later, when they overheard Quark and Odo talk about the Bajoran provisional governmet's interest in the land, Nog offered the land to Quark for five bars of gold-pressed latinum (which is what Nog had wanted in the first place).
14. Harry Mudd made an appearance on "The Animated Series", but James Doohan did the voice of Mudd.

Answer: False

Nope! Roger C. Carmel was available for doing the episode "Mudd's Passion", in which the scoundrel Harcourt Fenton Mudd was accused of selling a fake love potion to a mining colony.
15. Two cast members of "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" reunited in an episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

Answer: True

In the episode "Symbiosis", Merrit Butrick (David Marcus) and Judson Scott (Joachim Singh) were on opposite sides of a transaction gone wrong. At the center of the dispute was a shipment of a substance known as felicium, a highly-addictive drug that at one time bore the cure to a deadly plague.
16. "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is itself based upon a story written for the aborted "Phase II" project. What was the title of that story?

Answer: In Thy Image

Essentially, the plot of "In Thy Image" is nearly identical to that of the released movie, with some minor differences: Insted of Sonak and Spock, the resident Vulcan aboard ship was named Xon, facilitating the return of Spock; and Commander Decker didn't die at the end of the show.
In "To Attain the All", the Enterprise is challenged to figure their way through a huge maze for the ultimate prize of knowledge.
"Tomorrow and the Stars" involves a transporter malfunction that lands Captain Kirk in Pearl Harbor, 1941.
And in "The Savage Syndrome", the Enterprise crew is hit with a blinding light, brainwashing them into savages.
(Information from the book "Star Trek: The Lost Series", by Judith and Garfield Reese-Stevens)
17. For what system was the Heisenberg Compensator used?

Answer: Transporter

The Heisenberg Compensator suddenly found its way into the Transporter systems because some fans wrote in explained that Transporters could not function due to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Werner Heisenberg (1901 - 1976) was one of the founders of quantum mechanics, and he came up with the Uncertainty Principle in 1926.

The principle states "The more precisely the position is determined, the less precisely the momentum is known in this instant, and vice versa." In other words, the Transporter system might be able to precisely pick out either the motion or the position of every molecule in the human body, but not both. (Some information from www.aip.org, The American Institute for Physics website).
18. In the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before", Captain Kirk battles Gary Mitchell, who has been transformed into a god-like being. At one point, Mitchell conjures a grave for Kirk, complete with headstone. What letter is Kirk's middle initial on the headstone?

Answer: R

I guess it goes to show that even gods don't know everything... :)
Though some may consider this a big-time goof in the annals of "Star Trek", it must be pointed out that this is Kirk's first appearance in the show and, therefore, Gene Roddenberry was still ironing out some kinks in the show's bible (a book that is the basis of continuity in a given TV series).
19. Through the end of "Deep Space Nine", how many hosts did the Dax symbiont have in all, not including alternate timelines?

Answer: Ten

Officially, Dax had eight hosts: Lela, Tobin, Audrid, Emony, Torias, Curzon, Jadzia, and Ezri. In the episode "Invasive Procedures", an unjoined Trill named Verad, who had felt cheated from the honor of hosting, essentially kidnapped and hosted Dax for a short time. And in "Equilibrium", Jadzia discovered that a cover-up on her homeworld jeopardized her very existence, because a murderer named Joran had hosted Dax for about six months. So, including Verad and Joran, Dax had ten hosts through the end of "DS9".
20. In the original pilot "The Cage", what is the crew compliment of the Enterprise?

Answer: 203

While the crew compliment of the Enterprise was established as (approximately) 430 people, in "The Cage", Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) had a smaller crew, as evidenced in this line, spoken by a stressed-out Pike to Dr. Boyce (John Hoyt):
"You bet I'm tired! You bet! I'm tired of being responsible for 203 lives, and I'm tired of deciding which mission is too risky and which isn't, and who's going on the landing party and who doesn't, and who lives...and who dies."
