Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Star Trek" began in 1964, when a man named Gene Roddenberry put together a proposal for a new science fiction television series. Since then "Star Trek" has become a hugely popular franchise, producing several spin-off series and movies. The original "Star Trek" series ran from 1966 to 1969; then, beginning in 1987, several "Star Trek" spin-off series ran continuously until 2005. How many live action "Star Trek" series first aired during that eighteen year time period?

Answer: four

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" (starring Patrick Stewart) ran from 1987-1994.
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (starring Avery Brooks) ran from 1993-1999.
"Star Trek: Voyager" (starring Kate Mulgrew) ran from 1995-2001.
"Star Trek: Enterprise" (originally just "Enterprise" - staring Scott Bakula) ran from 2001-2005.

This question was contributed by a Nurse serving aboard the USS Enterprise, rattiemama.
2. Many people know that the somewhat infamous James T. Kirk is the captain on "Star Trek: The Original Series." Some people even know the name of the series' doctor, Leonard "Bones" McCoy. However, there is sometimes some confusion over the correct way to address the ship's first officer, Spock. How is Spock addressed?

Answer: Mr. Spock

Spock was a half Vulcan, half Human regular character on "Star Trek: The Original Series", although he made several appearances in the later spin-off series and tie-in literature. He was portrayed by Leonard Nimoy, and later by Zachary Quinto in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" movie of 2009. The mistake of referring to Spock as "Dr. Spock" instead of "Mr. Spock" is a common misconception made by people who are mostly unfamiliar with "Star Trek". The confusion probably arises from the existence of Dr. Benjamin Spock, a famous pediatrician who published a best-selling book, "Baby and Child Care", in 1946.

This question was contributed by the Chief Operations Officer of the USS Enterprise, misco.
3. One of the major species in the "Star Trek" universe are the Klingons, a warrior race who value honor and courage above all else. In "Star Trek: The Next Generation", one of the main characters is Worf, the only Klingon serving aboard a Starfleet ship. Worf is the quintessential Klingon: fierce, courageous, and proud. However, he loves to drink a somewhat unusual liquid, declaring it "a warrior's drink". What is this beverage?

Answer: Prune juice

When Worf was serving aboard the USS Enterprise-D on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", the bartender, Guinan, introduced him to prune juice. Worf took a liking to it, to the surprise of his colleagues. Later, when Worf became a regular character on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", he was often seen ordering prune juice from the bar aboard the space station.

This question was contributed by the USS Enterprise's Assistant Counselor, geowyn.
4. "Star Trek" has come a long way from its beginnings as an initially-rejected pilot episode in 1966. The franchise now boasts fans from all over the world, including several famous personages. Many celebrities have guest starred in "Star Trek" over the years, but which one of the following "huge" stars has not?

Answer: Jimmy Stewart

Jimmy Stewart starred in many Hollywood movies, but never in "Star Trek". Stewart is known for starring in the heart-warming Christmas film "It's a Wonderful Life" and the romantic comedy "The Philadelphia Story", among others.
Whoopi Goldberg played Guinan, an enigmatic El-Aurian, in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and also the movie "Star Trek: Generations". Whoopi asked to be included in the show after seeing "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in its first season, citing her reason for becoming an actor/entertainer was inspired by seeing Nichelle Nichols playing Uhura in the original "Star Trek" series.
Kirstie Alley, of "Cheers" fame, played Lt. Saavik in the movie "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan". Unfortunately, she refused to reprise the role for the following "Star Trek" movie, so her role was re-cast.
Joan Collins guest starred in an episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" called "The City on the Edge of Forever". This episode won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation in 1968.

This question was contributed by the First Officer of the USS Enterprise, nasty_liar.
5. One of the phrases most closely associated with "Star Trek" is "To boldly go where no man has gone before!" This expression is taken from the monologue that, on two of the "Star Trek" series, began all of the episodes' opening credits. Which two of the "Star Trek" television series began their opening credits with this monologue, that started with the resolute words "Space...the final frontier"?

Answer: "Star Trek: The Original Series" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation"

The introductions for "Star Trek: The Original Series" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" were very similar; the version from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" only had a few words changed from the original introduction on "Star Trek: The Original Series". The introduction for "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was narrated by Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard. William Shatner, who played Captain James Kirk, narrated the introduction for "Star Trek: The Original Series".

This question was contributed by the USS Enterprise's Morale Officer, milesprower18.
6. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" introduced a first in "Star Trek" history: a female doctor. The character is portrayed by Gates McFadden, and appears in all but the second season of the series. What is Dr. Crusher's first name?

Answer: Beverly

Dr. Beverly Crusher was the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Enterprise-D. She was a widow, as her husband Jack Crusher had been killed while serving aboard a different starship several years earlier. She held the rank of Commander, and was known (to her embarrassment) as "The Dancing Doctor" when she was in medical school due to her passion for tap and jazz dance.

This question was contributed by the Counselor of the USS Enterprise, sterretjie101.
The interesting information for this question was contributed by a Crewman serving aboard the USS Enterprise, ramonde.
7. There are many things that will make a Klingon angry; for example, insulting a Klingon's honor is a highly offensive affront, and will most often lead to a fight to the death. However, the Klingons are surprisingly angered by the sight of just one of these seemingly innocent things: tribbles. What exactly is a tribble?

Answer: A small furry creature

Tribbles were gentle creatures that emitted a relaxing purring sound when stroked. However, they reproduced asexually at a somewhat alarming rate; every twelve hours, one tribble could produce a litter of ten. Tribbles were an environmental menace to the Klingons, whom once attempted to wipe out tribbles for good. Although the Klingons did destroy the tribbles' home planet, they (unsurprisingly) didn't succeed in eliminating every single tribble from the galaxy.

This question was contributed by a Security Deputy serving aboard the USS Enterprise, Tipper42.
8. James T. Kirk is the captain on "Star Trek: The Original Series". He is one of the most famous captains in Starfleet history, having won several prestigious honors and medals and performed many daring feats. His middle name is somewhat famous as well, although a bit unusual. What does the "T" stand for?

Answer: Tiberius

The name "Tiberius" was the first name of Kirk's paternal grandfather. In the 2009 "Star Trek" movie, it was revealed that Kirk's father had wanted Tiberius to be his son's first name; however, Kirk's mother didn't like the name and used it as her son's middle name instead.
In the "Star Trek: The Original Series" episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before", a gravestone for Kirk was shown on-screen with the engraving "James R. Kirk". This was a mistake, but was not caught in time for the scene to be changed before it aired. Gene Roddenberry later attributed this error to a mistake on the part of the character who created the tombstone, Gary Mitchell.

This question was contributed by the Communications Officer of the USS Enterprise, countrygirl68.
9. This actress plays various characters in much of the "Star Trek" franchise, whether it be "Star Trek: The Original Series", "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine", or the "Star Trek" movies. However, not many people realize that she is also the voice of the computer in most of these episodes. Who is this multi-talented lady?

Answer: Majel Barrett

Majel Barrett appeared in the very first episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series" playing the first officer; however, she wasn't well received by the public, who felt the character should be a male. Since at that time she was dating the show's producer, Gene Roddenberry (whom she later married), she couldn't be fired. Therefore, she was kept on the show portraying the recurring character Nurse Christine Chapel for the remainder of the series. She later went on to play the flamboyant Lwaxana Troi in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine".
What not many people know is that Majel Barrett appeared in many episodes of every "Star Trek" series as the voice of the computer. Therefore, she holds the distinction of being the only person to have appeared in every "Star Trek" series.

This question was contributed by the USS Enterprise's Chief Engineer, Kaldav.
10. When many people think of "Star Trek", they inevitably think of the adventures of the starship Enterprise. However, there have been several different starships named Enterprise, commanded by different captains, over the course of "Star Trek" history. Which one of the following "Star Trek" captains was not in command of a starship named Enterprise?

Answer: Captain Kathryn Janeway

Captain Kathryn Janeway was in command of the USS Voyager on "Star Trek: Voyager", and faced many battles with the Borg and other hostile alien species when her ship was flung 75,000 light years away from Earth into the Delta Quadrant.
Captain James Kirk was in command of the first USS Enterprise on the original "Star Trek" series. Captain Jean-Luc Picard was in command of the USS Enterprise-D on "Star Trek: The Next Generation". Captain Jonathan Archer was in command of the Enterprise NX-01, Earth's first warp 5 capable starship, on "Star Trek: Enterprise".
