Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The "DS9" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations" is heralded as one of the best in "Star Trek" history, in which Sisko & Co. are "Gumped" into the "TOS" episode "The Trouble With Tribbles". But footage from one other "TOS" episode was also used. Which one?

Answer: Mirror, Mirror

The scene in question was the one in which "Lieutenant" Sisko hands Captain Kirk a duty roster and says it was an honor to serve on the Enterprise (as he was on "temporary duty"). The "TOS" footage is from "Mirror, Mirror", when Lt. Marlena Moreau (who was also the "Captain's Woman" in the mirror universe) handed Kirk the clipboard for him to sign.
2. "Star Trek" has introduced us to various sports, and we have seen quite a few of them. But which of the following sports was never shown during any incarnation of "Star Trek"?

Answer: Parrises Squares

Springball is a Bajoran form of handball, seen (with Major Kira as the winner in a game) in the "DS9" episode "For the Cause". An entire episode of "Voyager" was devoted to Tsukantse, a Delta-Quadrant form of professional wrestling, in the episode of the same name. And Anbo-jytsu, billed as the "highest evolution in martial arts," was demonstrated in the "TNG" episode "The Icarus Factor." But, while we have seen people suited for Parrises Squares, not a single "Star Trek" episode showed us the sport itself. All that we do know of Parrises Squares is that there are four members on a team ("TNG" episode "11001001"), and that it is a violent contact sport ("TNG" episodes "The Icarus Factor" and "Future Imperfect").
3. Which of the following characters was NOT played by more than one actor?

Answer: Seska

Tora Ziyal (Dukat's half-Bajoran daughter on "DS9") was played by Cyia Batten in "Indiscretion" and "Return to Grace", by Tracy Middendorf in "For the Cause", and by Melanie Smith in "In Purgatory's Shadow", "By Inferno's Light", "Call to Arms", "Sons and Daughters", "Behind the Lines", "Favor the Bold", and "Sacrifice of Angels".
The Borg Queen was played by Alice Krige in "Star Trek: First Contact" and in the "Voyager" finale "Endgame", but in the "Voyager" two-part episodes "Unimatrix Zero" and "Dark Frontier", she was played by Susanna Thompson.
Alexander Rozhenko, Worf's son, was played by Jon Paul Steuer in the "TNG" episode "Reunion", then by Brian Bonsall for the rest of "TNG". In the "TNG" episode "Firstborn", James Sloyan played an adult Alexander who had gone back in time. And in the "DS9" episodes "Sons and Daughters" and "You Are Cordially Invited...", Marc Worden played Alexander as a young adult.
But Seska, the Maquis crewmember/Cardassian spy on "Voyager", was played exclusively by Martha Hackett.
4. The aircraft carrier featured in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" really was the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Answer: False

Unfortunately, the Enterprise was at sea during the scheduled period of filming. Therefore, the U.S.S. Ranger was used instead.

NOTE -- Once a year, selected crew members of the carrier Enterprise have appeared in walk-on (non-speaking) roles on "Enterprise".
5. In how many episodes of "TNG" did Lore make an appearance (two-part episodes are counted separately)?

Answer: 4

Lore's first appearance was in "Datalore". He then appeared in "Brothers", and in "Descent, Part I" and "Descent, Part II". Brent Spiner has also appeared three times as Dr. Noonien Soong on "TNG", as Dr. Soong's ancestor, geneticist Arik Soong, in three episodes of "Enterprise", and as the prototype Soong android B-4 in "Star Trek: Nemesis".
6. On "DS9", what was the original name of the second U.S.S. Defiant?

Answer: Sao Paulo

Introduced in Season 7's "The Dogs of War", the U.S.S. Sao Paulo (NCC-75633) was assigned to DS9 after the Defiant was abandoned following a Breen attack a few months earlier. As special favor from Admiral Ross, Sisko was allowed to rename the new ship U.S.S. Defiant, complete with the original "NX" registry number designation.
7. Which of the following is NOT true of Zefram Cochrane?

Answer: He built the Phoenix in Idaho

In "Star Trek: First Contact", La Forge tells Cochrane of both the statue at the launch site and the fact he went to Zefram Cochrane High School. In the "TOS" episode "Metamorphosis", Kirk is led to a small planet in the Gamma Canaris system, where a rejuvenated Cochrane has been living for over 100 years. And the term "millicochrane" (introduced in "TNG") is defined as 1/1000th of the energy needed to create a warp field.
By the way, Cochrane built the Phoenix in Montana, not Idaho.
8. The first-ever website promoting a major motion picture appeared in 1994, for "Star Trek: Generations". What was the URL (address) of this website?

Answer: generations.viacom.com

In October 2004, startrek.com launched a "time capsule" version of the original website for "Star Trek: Generations" to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the movie's release. Developed by a mere handful of people and presented in what is considered a primitive format by today's standards, it quickly became one of the most popular websites in those early days of the modern Internet.

In an October 27, 2004, article posted on startrek.com, a direct result of marketing "Star Trek: Generations" on the Web was "the biggest weekend box-office total of any Star Trek movie to date." (Information and quote from startrek.com)
9. On "Voyager", Commander Chakotay emarked on several "vision quests", in which he would meet with an animal that was his spirit guide. Which of the following animals was Chakotay's spirit guide?

Answer: Wolf

Though all of these would make appropriate spirit guides, Chakotay's guide is the timber wolf. Captain Janeway's guide was a lizard ("The Cloud") and, though we never learned which animal was Torres' spirit guide, we do know that she did try to kill it during her first vision quest.
10. In "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", Kirk and Spock walk back to San Francisco from the Cetacean Institute, and Gillian Taylor (Catherine Hicks) pulls up to give them a lift. As she does so, she addresses them as a famous movie duo. Which of these was the term she used?

Answer: Robin Hood and Friar Tuck

In this amusing scene, Gillian spots our heroes, rolls down her window, and says "Well, if it isn't Robin Hood and Friar Tuck."

"Star Trek IV" is my favorite of the "TOS" movies, and this scene, which is among the funniest in the film, is one of the reasons why. By the way, the response to the question "You guys like Italian?" at the end of this scene was completely improvised!
11. Which of the following "Star Trek" actors did NOT have his own child appear with him in an episode or movie?

Answer: Leonard Nimoy

Patrick Stewart's son, Daniel, appeared in the "TNG" episode "The Inner Light", as Kamen's (Captain Picard's) son, Batai. William Shatner's daughter, Melanie, was the yeoman holding the malfunctioning Captain's Log in "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", as Kirk tried to make an entry; she also appeared in the "TOS" episode "Miri", as one of the children on Miri's Planet. And John deLancie's son, Keeran, played Q's son in the "Voyager" episode "Q2".

But Leonard Nimoy's son, Adam, decided to remain behind the scenes by following his father's lead to the Director's Chair. He directed the "TNG" episode "Rascals", and his other directorial credits include episodes of "NYPD Blue", "Babylon 5", "The Practice", and "Gilmore Girls" (information from IMDb.com).
12. On "DS9", what was Ezri Dax's last name before she was joined with the Dax symbiont?

Answer: Tigan

Ezri's family name is Tigan ("Prodigal Daughter"). Kahn is the name of another Trill symboint to whom Dax had been previously married ("Rejoined"). Belar is the family name of Joran, the sixth host of the Dax symbiont (and the one who was covered up after he had murdered someone), and Rehnol was the last name of a doctor at the Symbiosis Commission on Trill ("Equilibrium").
13. How old was Kira Nerys when the Cardassian occupation of Bajor ended?

Answer: 26 years

In the "DS9" episode "The Maquis, Part I", Kira and Commander Sisko were having a heated discussion about the Federation colonists in the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone, when she said that she had lived under the Cardassians' collective thumb for 26 years before Bajor was liberated.

By the way, the occupation of Bajor had lasted a minimum of 40 years, as established in the "TNG" episode "Ensign Ro".
14. How many people held the title of Chief Engineer of the Enterprise-D during Season One of "TNG"?

Answer: four

The first season of "TNG" seemed to have a revolving door with Chief Engineers on the Enterprise-D. First, there was Lt. Cmdr. Sarah McDougal (Brooke Bundy) in "The Naked Now". Next, Lt. Cmdr. Logan (Vyto Rugins) came on in "The Arsenal of Freedom". Lt. Cmdr. Argyle (Biff Yeagar) stayed the longest, appearing in two episodes, "Where No One Has gone Before" and "Datalore". And Lt. Cmdr. Leland T. Lynch (Walker Boone) was the Engineer who was in the middle of realigning the dilithium crystals at the beginning of "Skin of Evil".

NOTE -- Startrek.com says that Lynch was a subordinate of La Forge in "Skin of Evil", but La Forge did not become Chief Engineer until "The Child", at the beginning of Season Two.
15. On "Enterprise", how many members of the crew (including MACOs) did Archer say had died during the ship's mission in the Delphic Expanse?

Answer: 27

In the episode "Home", Captain Archer and his senior staff make an appearance at Starfleet Command to accept commendations for stopping the Xindi attack. As Archer addresses the audience, he says that though many think of the crew as heroes, the real heroes are the 27 crew members who did not make it home.
16. A guest character's name on "TOS" was directly based on the English alphabet.

Answer: True

In "All Our Yesterdays", the Librarian on Sarpeidon was named Mr. Atoz. If you look closely, you will notice that the name literally means "A-to-Z." Ian Wolfe, who had played Mr. Atoz, also appeared in the "TOS" episode "Bread and Circuses".
17. In the "TOS" episode "Assignment: Earth", what was the name of Gary Seven's cat?

Answer: Isis

Isis was an unusually intelligent black cat who seemed to be the eyes and ears (and the messenger) of Gary Seven, who had been sent to Earth from a distant star system to make sure that humans don't end up destroying themselves during the Cold War. Isis apparently has shape-shifting capabilities, as well.

At the end of the episode, Roberta Lincoln (Teri Garr) looked toward the sofa one moment and saw the cat; when she looked again, there was a woman dressed in black in her place!
18. On "DS9", Odo must revert to his natural state (liquid) every 18 hours.

Answer: False

No, it's 16 hours.

Hypothetically, this would mean his rest period would have to begin two hours earlier with each passing day. Interesting that he and Kira would review the criminal activities log every morning (shortly after 0800 hours), even though he should've been forced to reschedule the review four out of every 13 days until he was properly rested (given the hypothetical circumstance).
19. Which of the following episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager" was the first to feature Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz)?

Answer: Projections

Barclay's first "Voyager" appearance was in Season Two's "Projections", in which a holographic version of him nearly convinces the EMH to destroy Voyager's warp core with a phaser. But Chakotay intervenes and explains that the holo-imaging systems had malfunctioned and that, by firing, the EMH would end up destroying himself.

Barclay was not seen again until Season Six, when he appeared in six more episodes, beginning with "Pathfinder" and ending with the finale, "Endgame".
20. In the parting shot of the "DS9" finale "What You Leave Behind", Jake Sisko watches the wormhole open and close, then another person joins him at the window. Who?

Answer: Kira Nerys

In the final scene, Colonel Kira leaves Quark's and notices Jake standing at a window on the upper level of DS9's Promenade. There, Jake watches the wormhole open and close, as if his father (who had joined the Prophets after defeating Dukat in the fire cave) was sending him a message. Kira then joins Jake at the window, and the final shot shows the two of them as the camera pulls away from the station.
