Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Watch with Mother" was the name given to the BBC children's slot from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. What was its previous title?

Answer: "For the Children"

"Are you sitting comfortably? Good, then I'll begin" came from BBC Radio's "Listen with Mother".
2. "Andy Pandy" was a mainstay of "Watch with Mother". One of his friends was a rag doll named Looby Loo. What was the name of his other friend?

Answer: Teddy

"Andy Pandy" was first aired on "For the Children" on 11th July 1950. Twenty-six original episodes were made and aired over and over again, presumably to catch a new batch of children every so often.
3. Where did Andy Pandy live?

Answer: In a laundry basket

When "Andy Pandy" was remade in 2002, Andy Pandy, Teddy and Looby Loo each had their own house and the series was set in a village. In the original series, Andy Pandy's world was confined to the nursery and the garden.
4. The name of which programme completes the following phrase? "But the man who worked in the garden didn't know anything had happened at all. Nobody knew about ____."

Answer: The Flowerpot Men

"The Flowerpot Men" first graced our screens in 1952. Bill and Ben were the brainchild of Hilda Brabban, who had two younger brothers named William and Benjamin. She also had a younger sister Phyllis, who was immortalized as Little Weed.
5. What is the official name of the language spoken by The Flowerpot Men?

Answer: Oddle Poddle

There was concern that the language spoken by Bill and Ben could interfere with children's speech development, to which I say "Flobadob"! Incidentally, "Flobadob" was the name that the original William and Benjamin gave to the sound made by passing wind in the bath!
6. In "Rag, Tag and Bobtail," Rag was a mouse and Bobtail was a rabbit. What type of animal was Tag?

Answer: Hedgehog

"Rag, Tag and Bobtail" was first shown in 1953. Occasionally they were joined by five unnamed baby rabbits. I well remember the excitement of waiting to see if the baby rabbits would appear! Children were very easily pleased back then.
7. What were the names of the twins from "The Woodentops"?

Answer: Jenny and Willy

"The Woodentops" first aired in 1955. They were a family of wooden dolls who lived on a farm. The theme music for the show is "Kulokk" or "Cow Call" and came from a composition by Edvard Grieg.
8. What was the name of the dog in "The Woodentops"?

Answer: Spotty

"And last of all, the very biggest spotty dog you ever did see,
And they all lived together in a little house in the country."
9. Which two programmes were remade in 2000 and 2002 respectively?

Answer: "Bill and Ben" and "Andy Pandy"

A further thirteen episodes of "Bill and Ben" were made in 2000. A further 52 episodes of "Andy Pandy" were made in 2002. Somehow, they just didn't look right in color and without strings!
10. In 1963 the charming "Tales of the Riverbank" was added to "Watch with Mother". What country originally produced this programme?

Answer: Canada

"Tales of the Riverbank" starred real animals. In the UK the main characters were Hammy the Hamster, Roderick the Water Rat and GP the guinea pig. All the animals were voiced by Johnny Morris. Apparently the animals were made to look as if they were talking by having peanut butter put on the roofs of their mouths - as they tried to remove it they appeared to be talking.

They'd never get away with that now!
