Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which puppet family had "the very biggest spotty dog you ever did see"?

Answer: The Woodentops

This story of a farming puppet family was made between 1955 and 1957. Nobody was quite sure why Daddy Woodentop had a strong rural accent while Mummy Woodentop and the twins spoke in a very stiff middle class manner.
2. Who shared a basket with Looby Loo and Teddy?

Answer: Andy Pandy

Looby Loo never appeared at the same time as Andy and Teddy even though they all lived in the same picnic basket. There were 26 episodes made of the original 1950's black and white series but it was then resurrected in the 1970's in colour.
3. In the puppet show 'Rag, Tag and Bobtail', Rag was a hedgehog, Tag was a mouse, what was Bobtail?

Answer: Rabbit

The adventures of these three friends, sometimes with five baby rabbits as well, were broadcast from 1953-1965. The characters were all glove puppets operated by Sam and Elizabeth Williams.
4. Who used the language "oddle poddle" to communicate with their friend Little Weed?

Answer: Bill and Ben

Those naughty Flowerpot men first graced our screens in 1950. There was some criticism of Bill and Ben's language as it was suggested it slowed children's speech development, all I can say is "Flobberlob".
5. Which series involved real animals playing a group of friends living by the water using boats, cars and all kinds of gadgets?

Answer: Tales of the Riverbank

Tales of the Riverbank was originally a Canadian series bought by the BBC and dubbed using Johnny Morris to provide the voices for the animals. The main characters were Hammy Hamster, Roderick the Water Rat and GP the Guinea Pig.
6. Which cartoon series was about a group of pirates constantly searching for hidden treasure?

Answer: Captain Pugwash

Captain Pugwash used a unique type of animation, devised by creator John Ryan, involving cardboard cut out characters operated by levers. Originally a comic strip 'Captain Pugwash' was commissioned as a cartoon series by the BBC in 1957.
7. Which entertainment show, originally hosted by Eamonn Andrews, had a quiz where contestants were given a cabbage for a wrong answer?

Answer: Crackerjack

'Crackerjack' was a manic mix of competitive games music and comedy which ran from 1955-1984. Although there were many hosts over the years the most consistent cast member was Peter Glaze who took part in the show from the 1960's until his death in 1983.
8. Which Oliver Postgate animated series was in the form of a Norse saga?

Answer: Noggin the Nog

The saga revolved around Noggin's search for his Eskimo bride Nooka and their life afterwards. The evil character Nogbad the Bad, Noggin's uncle, was constantly trying to wrest the crown from Noggin.
9. Which puppet lived in Toytown with his friend Big Ears?

Answer: Noddy

Based on the Enid Blyton books ,Noddy first came to the screen in 1955. Noddy is the Toytown taxi driver and regularly falls foul of PC. Plod, usually because of a misunderstanding.
10. Which French animated series involved, among others, a shaggy dog, a pink cow and a snail?

Answer: Magic Roundabout

Created by Serge Danot in 1965, it is probably best remembered for Eric Thompson's ad-libbed voice overs. During the seventies Jasper Carrott released a 'Magic Roundabout' sketch on record which was definitely not for children.
