Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Fear Factor" emerged in 2001 as a reality/adventure program and remained until 2006, producing 144 episodes. In 2011 there was a brief but less than successful revival. In 2017 it was revived by MTV. Who is the host of this edition?

Answer: Ludacris

Actor/rapper Ludacris brings an image of youth and vitality to this dated program. Christopher Brian Bridges gained fame as a rapper in the early 2000s based in part on his use of street/ghetto wording. The show starts with four teams of two who have a connection such as being siblings, roommates, college students, long term friends, etc.. They are faced with three challenges with one team eliminated at step one and two and the final two square off for the cash prize.

Most often the segments involve insects, small animals, disgusting food, isolation, and heights, something most of the contestants have a fear. For instance, in an episode the first challenge was to put both heads into a cage of lizard and swallow about six feet of string to trigger the release. In the second, one of the team is placed in a coffin and buried while the other team member tries to sort out clues to release a shovel to dig the partner out. The finale was to gather flags from a car suspended over a cliff before it crashes and explodes.
2. In 2012 magic/comedy act Penn and Teller created a program based on their ability to ferret out how a particular act of prestidigitation was accomplished. The name of the show is "Penn and Teller: ________ ________"?

Answer: Fool Us

Magicians are invited to the program to perform their best act. Penn and Teller are seated up front and confer with Teller whispering into Penn's ear to maintain his Harpo Marx image. Penn, of course, speaks for both of them. However, Penn speaks in magician code so as not to fully give the trick away or may write a brief note to the performer which he/she must acknowledge.

Most of time the performer loses. Those who "fool us" are invited to perform at Penn and Teller's theater in Las Vegas and receive the coveted "Fool Us" trophy. Or as Penn calls it "The F. U."
3. After many decades of the Batman franchise, one might think that new ideas might be difficult to conger. But "Gotham" has a freshness. We find Bruce Wayne but he is not yet Batman but a teenager. We also meet Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot who is in his early twenties. What traditional villain does he develop into?

Answer: The Penguin

As many as twenty actors have portrayed "The Penguin" on film, television, or voice-over in cartoons and radio. Among them are Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, Seth Green, and David Stiers. But Robin Lord Taylor has put a special stamp on the character who starts the series as a low level punk and develops into the crime kingpin of Gotham City.

Other traditional Batman characters receive a youthful makeover as well.
4. Even though you might not frequent bars and pubs, "Bar Rescue" provides an interesting entertainment. Hosted by bar expert Jon Taffer who tries to save failing bars into profitable business ventures. Taffer's team first performs reconnaissance and surveillance on a struggling bar to pinpoint operational and service weaknesses. What is NOT a typical problem found?

Answer: Serving underage drinkers

Taffer exhibits a brusque confrontational attitude intended to goad the owner into making drastic changes to the way the bar is run. Lots of four letter words are bleeped. This may include firing of inept or dishonest employees. But it always comes back to the owner who may be drunk, inexperienced, absent, or just overwhelmed.

Jon often opens the show by terrorizing the staff and owner pointing out unacceptable conditions and attitudes. He then brings in a mixologist and a chef to train staff while Jon will spend most of his time with the owner. There is normally a 'stress test' in which the bar is packed and points out glaring errors. Remodeling follows that often includes a name change.

Taffer claims an 80% success rate but some of his failures are dramatic.
5. Religious leaders come and go and may be an object of controversy (Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart) and some of praise (Billy Graham, Fulton Sheen). This woman was a Christian all her life but really did not find her direction until a mature adult. Her ministry has grown to be one of the most powerful and occasionally controversial. Her first name is Joyce but what is her last name?

Answer: Meyer

Meyer's sermons are particularly appealing to women that is evident when glimpses of the audiences are shown. Her sermons are sincere, punctuated with her sense of humor, and a trove of stories from her past.

I'll paraphrase one story: Joyce was wearing the shortest shorts that she could find with her legs crossed in front of her, smoking a cigarette while teaching a Bible class.

And another: Joyce was running late to speaking engagement but thought her husband Dave was driving too slow. When Dave began to allow cars on side streets into their lane of traffic, Joyce became quite upset. She changed her sermon topic to "Learning Patience".
6. Two people are dropped in to a hostile environment without clothing and a few tools and asked to survive twenty one days. What is the name of this program?

Answer: Naked and Afraid

The environment is not always a jungle. Yes, the participants are naked but genital parts are blurred out except for the buttock. When set down they have only an over the shoulder bag and one item they were allowed to bring with them such as a fire-making devices, a machete, a small pot. The contestants have been prescreen and have had some type of survival training or experience. Fire, food, and shelter make up the basic mantra. After 21 days they must make a long trek to the extraction point.

Many do not survive the 21 days because of accidents, disease, and the mental trauma of the experience, although they are watched 24/7 by hidden and long range cameras for safety purposes.
7. RuPaul is a drag queen, television personality, and singer/songwriter. In 2016 he won an Emmy for a program he hosted. What was it called?

Answer: RuPaul's Drag Race

RuPaul won his first Emmy as host over Ryan Seacrest, Jane Lynch, Heidi Klum, Tom Bergeron, and Steve Harvey. "RuPaul's Drag Race" consists of an annual contest to determine the best drag queen (female impersonator) for the year. The show is the highest-rated television program on cable "Logo" and airs internationally in Australia, Canada and the UK. Past episodes can be found on "YouTube".
8. "Longmire" is based on a series of novels by Craig Johnson. "Longmire" is noted for its 'word of mouth' rather than its publicity. Walt Longmire is a sheriff in Absaroka County, Wyoming, who returns to full-time work after his wife's death which is the major plot line of the early episodes. Longmire is portrayed by an Australian actor who shares his name with what well known American matinee idol?

Answer: Robert Taylor

Robert Taylor has a long list of film and television appearances in UK, Australia, and the United States but his rugged face seems perfect for the role of Walt Longmire. The show had moderate success but when it was cancelled it was picked up by Netflix and episodes have been added or planned. Lou Diamond Phillips steals nearly every scene he in as Walt's best friend and his advisor in dealing with Indian community.
9. It is a known fact that many men do not dress well nor do we--myself included-- have a sense of style. In 2003 what unusual program sought to remedy that by having gay people remake guys with this problem?

Answer: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

This surprise hit lasted five years--2003-2007. They called themselves "The Fab Five". They included Ted Allen: "Food and Wine Connoisseur"; Kyan Douglas: "Grooming Guru"; Thom Filicia: "Design Doctor"; Carson Kressley: "Fashion Savant"; and Jai Rodriguez: "Culture Vulture".

Rumors have circuited the an updated version of "Queer Eye" may be revived by Netflix.
10. While nearly all the programs mentioned in this quiz are cable based, "Big Brother" is a staple of summertime programming on CBS which is the franchised United States version of an international program. In the US version, which is NOT part of the format?

Answer: Television audience votes people out of the house

The term "Big Brother" is taken from George Orwell's novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four". "Big Brother" is seen in 54 countries. If you are seeing the American version, there are three or four edited hours each week plus "BB After Dark" that are shown each night live. In addition, there is the CBS app and cable on demand. For an extra fee, CBS will stream it directly to you 24/7. The airways provide a multitude of options.

The two nominated house guests can be saved by winning the veto contest. House guests are eliminated weekly and become jurors who will make final decision on the winner of the cash prize. Most of the house guests are in their 20s or 30s and perhaps a couple in their 40s.
