Right before Xander and the mean kids get possessed Buffy and Willow are caught trying to follow them into the hyena cage. The Zookeeper, later discovered as the villain, tells Buffy and Willow how sinister hyenas can be.

Zookeeper: "The Masai tribesmen told me that hyenas are capable of
understanding human speech. They follow humans around by day, learning
their names. At night, when the campfire dies, they call out to a
person. Once they separate him, the pack (snaps his fingers) devours
them."

Buffy calls him this colorful nickname trying to stop him from eating Cordelia. Before she kills him, she also calls him 'Wormy'.

While everyone else is reeling from the fight they just witnessed, Cordelia remains oblivious either to the whole thing, or perhaps its importance, and thus is the only one to "Surprise" at the party. She does add a sincere "Happy Birthday" as well.

Buffy tells the colonel this as she is realizing just how clueless he is.

Indeed she is. As she is narrating the episode through the form of her diary she tells us all: "Nobody knows who I am. Not the real me. It's like, nobody cares enough to find out. While Buffy is having difficulty understanding Tara throughout the episode, along with everyone else except Willow and Dawn, she is still the first to call her family. This solidifies Tara's place with the group, even more than if it had been someone like Willow or Dawn. It is how she is accepted without prejudice.
