quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Executive ADA Ben Stone told ADA Paul Robinette that he needed to decide if he he thought of himself as "a black lawyer, or ________." What goes in the blank?

Answer: a lawyer who's black

Stone had this conversation with Robinette in the episode "Out of the Half-Light" from the first season. It must have made an impression on Robinette because he referred to it when he returned as a defense attorney in season 6's episode "Custody".
2. Standing next to over 50 corpses from a fire at a social club, Detective Mike Logan asked his partner, veteran Sergeant Phil Cerreta, "I've never seen this many. You?" Cerreta responded, "Not in _________ life." Fill in the blank.

Answer: civilian

Cerreta was a good match for hot-headed Logan; it was sad to see him go in season 3. In this episode, Cerreta revealed one of my favorite aspects to the "L&O formula": the red herring crime. Cerreta: "Some alibi: 'I'm not an arsonist, I'm an extortionist.'"
3. Detective Lennie Briscoe:: "Love: a devastating disease instantly cured by ________." Fill in the blank.

Answer: marriage

Poor Lennie, never lucky in love. He rarely had a good thing to say about marriage. Can't blame him, exactly, as he was twice divorced, which he mentions several times throughout his run on the show.
4. Lennie, on being sent out of state on an investigation: "New Hampshire. I spent a ________ there one weekend." What completes the quote?

Answer: year

Lennie Briscoe was nothing if not a born-and-bred New Yorker. Even traveling to New Jersey annoyed him.
5. The understated medical examiner, Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers, usually seen in the autopsy room, had gallows humor. And also an iron stomach. Detective Ed Green: "What's that on your phone? Brains?" Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers: "It's __________ maybe." What was it?

Answer: egg salad

As you can imagine, Detective Green asked if she had another phone. Dr. Elizabeth Rodgers, played by Leslie Hendrix, was one of the few characters to appear at least once in most of the American-based "Law & Order" series: the original, "SVU", "Criminal Intent", and "Trial by Jury".
6. One of the saddest moments in the series was in "Demand" in season 8 when Lennie learned his daughter, Cathy, had been killed. What did his partner, Rey Curtis, say when Lennie stumbled away from the crime scene?

Answer: "You're coming home with me, partner."

Lennie was never really the same after Cathy's death. He was always very pained when he had to talk to grieving parents.
7. In "Aftershock," a non-formulaic episode that viewers tend to either love or hate, ADA Jack McCoy got drunk in an Irish bar and talks about his father's what?

Answer: big hands

We learned a little about McCoy's father during the show's run: he was a Chicago police officer, he drank too much, and he would use his hands on his wife and son.

This episode was a landmark episode of the show, wherein Lennie had an alcoholic relapse, Rey cheated on his wife, and Claire was killed in a car accident.
8. District Attorney Adam Schiff, played by Steven Hill, had some of the best lines in the series, delivered quietly, quickly, and brilliantly. Schiff: "Quick, lock the door. Someone might walk in with a case we can _______." Fill in the blank.

Answer: win

Schiff was by far the most sarcastic character on the show. He was forever balancing justice with public opinion in order to stay in office, a requirement of the job Jack McCoy learned when he moved up to DA in the final two seasons. "No wonder Adam Schiff was always cranky," he would say.
9. Halfway through season 15, ADA Serena Southerlyn was summarily fired. She asked the DA, Arthur Branch, "Is this because ________ ?" Complete the quote.

Answer: I'm a lesbian

Elisabeth Rohm played Serena Southerlyn. Some viewers have criticized how she was written out of the show, because there were no clues that she was a lesbian earlier in the series. She was the second longest serving junior ADA in the history of the original series, after Connie Rubirosa, played by Alana de la Garza.
10. When Rey admitted that the reason he transferred to homicide was that he was being harassed by his female boss, what was Lennie's response?

Answer: "Can I transfer there?"

One-liners like these were one of the reasons that Lennie was so loved by fans.

According to a Hallmark Chanell Poll, Lennie Briscoe was "Law & Order"'s third greatest detective in the entire US franchise. Only "Special Victims Unit" Detective Olivia Benson and "Criminal Intent" Detective Robert Goren were ahead of him, with Goren in first place.
