Ed's wife was divorcing him. When the judge ruled, she looked thrilled, but Ed was barely able to contain himself as he signed the papers. Afterwards, he went to a bar to drown his problems in alcohol.

Ed was on the phone, unsuccessfully trying to sell stocks to a woman, when Betty called him a loser and started laughing maniacally. Ed thought it was another office worker, and stormed up to her, insisting that she say it to his face. She was, of course, confused, so Ed pushed some files from her desk to the floor before his supervisor asked him to go home for the day.

Scully was already in the office when Mulder arrived, and she asked him why she didn't have a desk. When he pointed to the back corner of the room and told her he'd thought that was her area, she was clearly displeased. Mulder replied sardonically, "Okay, so we'll have them send down another desk and there won't be any room to move around her but we can put them really close together face to face, maybe we can play some Battleship."

Answer: "Rocky and Bullwinkle" episode

Mulder wanted her to do surveillance based on his story, but she refused, saying that he was "recounting a poorly veiled synopsis of an episode of Rocky and Bullwinkle." Mulder was skeptical, so Scully explained: "Rocky and Bullwinkle are looking for an upsidasium mine. Boris Badenov alters the road signs which causes them to walk onto a secret military base, where they are picked up by a car with no windows and no door locks, and there are silent explosions from a compound called 'Hushaboom.'"

Answer: burned it in the incinerator

After Betty had been ribbing him for taking what she saw as abuse from women, Ed burst into Ms. Schilling's apartment and attacked her. Then he dragged a cardboard box with her body down to the basement and put the body in the incinerator.

Answer: red lips

The tattoo artist asked Scully for her opinion, and she said "Wow. The, uh, the color... the red on the lips. It's extraordinary." When the artist excused himself from the room, Scully and Ed continued to talk and he asked her to dinner, giving her his card.

Ed had made reservations at a restaurant, but Scully asked him to take her to the "crummy bar" he'd told her about.

Scully got the design she had been looking at the first she was in the store: an ouroboros. It was a mythical snake eating its own tail, and seemed to symbolize Scully's sense of always coming full circle back to the same place in life.

Though Scully's badge had dropped on the floor, Ed didn't see it. When she was in the other room getting changed, Betty urged Ed to press redial on the phone to find out who Scully had called. When he got the FBI, he asked for Dana Scully (at Betty's insistence) and the operator patched him through to her phone. Ed hung up, having found out that Scully was an FBI agent.

Ed had dragged Scully down to the basement but she woke up before he could dump her in the incinerator. She stabbed his arm with a pair of scissors and told him to fight the voice he heard. Ed did, and stuck his arm in the incinerator, severely burning his flesh but also (hopefully) getting rid of Betty.

When Scully returned to Washington, Ed was in custody at a hospital being treated for his burns.
