Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In PC game 26 "Tomb of the Lost Queen", we meet the eminent Egyptologist Dr. Abdullah Bakhoum, who is working on an archaelogical dig near Cairo. Which other character from this game is officially working on his team?

Answer: Lily Crewe

In "Tomb of the Lost Queen" Nancy goes to an archaelogical dig near Cairo. At this site might be the tomb of one of the lost queens of Egypt, Nefertari. Nancy is there to job-shadow Professor Jon Boyle, the leader of the dig. Also working on the dig is Dr. Abdullah Bakhoum, an eminent Egyptologist. His knowledge of Egyptian history and hieroglyphs is as large as his ego is, so Nancy finds. He holds very strong opinions about various issues and talks in a rude and condescending manner about those things he does not appreciate. He is sure the tomb is that of Nefertari, as he does not come out of bed for anything less than spectacular.

Abdullah has taken on archaelogy student Lily Crewe as his assistant. Professor Boyle tells Nancy that it would not have been his choice given her history, but refuses to say more on the issue. During the course of the game Nancy unearths that Lily was involved in a plagiarism scandal. Yet Abdullah has given her a second chance. As it turns out, Abdullah is pressurizing Lily to do his dirty work for him. Abdullah has ties with the black market and is behind the attack on Professor Boyle, who had to go to a hospital in Cairo as a result. He also arranges several other accidents to happen, mostly through Lily. In the end sequence Nancy has to find a path to the exit of the tomb to prevent Abdullah from escaping. When she arrives at the exit, Abdullah tries to attack her, but is struck down himself by Professor Boyle, who arrived back at the dig just in time to save Nancy.
2. In PC game 18, "The Phantom of Venice", Nancy goes to Italy to find the true identity of an art thief in Venice. In the palazzo where she stays Helena Berg is her roommate. What is Helena's profession?

Answer: Journalist

In "The Phantom of Venice" Nancy is asked by Prudence Rutherford (also appearing in "Secret of the Scarlet Hand" and "Danger by Design") to investigate a series of art thefts by a mysterious caped figure wearing a mask, calling himself the Phantom. During her time in Venice, she stays at the Ca' Nascosta, a palazzo where Prudence once lived. It is currenly owned by widow Margherita Faubourg. Nancy shares her room with Helena Berg, a German journalist from Hamburg. Helena loves Venice and would love to be able to buy her own palazzo one day. In the mean time she learns all there is to know about the city and tries to get introduced to the best parties in town. In her notebook she writes down impressions about some of the people she meets.

Helena works for Eurowelt Magazine. She wrote six stories for that magazine about the trial of Leo Machiano. He ran a crime ring in Venice. The Phantom now seems to be taking over where Machiano left off. Nancy soon finds that the organisation behind the Phantom uses names of Commedia Dell'Arte characters. The ring leader, known as Il Dottore, seems to be one of the people staying at the Ca' Nascosta. Nancy deduces this from the fact that a box of chocolates for Il Dottore gets delivered there. Relaying messages with chocolates is one of the ways of communication for the criminal organisation, that tries to not use any means of communication that can be traced, also using carrier pigeons and chess notations for instance. Eventually Nancy learns that Helena is Il Dottore, using her knowledge of the Machiano crime ring to her advantage, stealing art for a wealthy woman called Hildegard Killian. In the end sequence Nancy manages to trace Helena, using a bug that was planted on all suspects earlier in the game. She has Helena arrested and gets her locket back that the Phantom stole from her the first night in Venice. Helena was wearing it, when she was busted. The locket was a gift from her boyfriend Ned Nickerson. Helena does not go quietly though, vowing revenge on Nancy.
3. In PC game 8, "The Haunted Carousel", Nancy tries to find out who stole a carousel horse from an amusement park in New Jersey. There was also an accident with the roller coaster, causing the park to shut down. One of the people that Nancy meets is Harlan Bishop, the park's security guard. What does Nancy find about him that makes him suspicious?

Answer: He is an ex-con

In "The Haunted Carousel" Nancy is asked by Paula Santos, the owner of amusement park Captain's Cove, to investigate a series of mysterious events at the park, including the theft of a carousel horse, the carousel mysteriously starting by itself and the roller coaster stopping mid-ride. Only a few employees of the park are still working, while the park is closed. One of them is Harlan Bishop, the park's security guard. When Nancy first meets him he tells her he used to work at a department store in Flemington. When Nancy talks to chief engineer Ingrid Corey she tells Nancy that Harlan said he used to work as a bouncer in Trenton.

When Nancy snoops around in Harlan's office while he is not there, she finds the number of a man called Luis Guerra. He turns out to be Harlan's parole officer. Nancy also learns in her investigation that years ago stolen jewels were hidden in the park. The cellmate of the jewel thief was recently released and seems to match Harlan's description. On top of that she finds a video tape that Harlan made of Ingrid punching in the access code to her private area. It turns out that Paula Santos knew that Harlan was an ex-con, when she hired him. He did tape Ingrid, but he was just being too eager to prove himself, feeling he should have access to all of the park as a security guard. Nancy apologises to Harlan for snooping around on him and talking to Paula Santos about her suspicions. While talking to Harlan's parole officer, she says that Harlan is one of the nicest men anyone can ever meet.
4. In PC game 24, "The Captive Curse", Nancy travels to a German castle to rid it of a monster roaming the lands for centuries now. During her investigation she contacts Jordan Blakesley, who is working for an organisation called Castle Cast. What does this organisation do exactly?

Answer: Arrange staff

In "The Captive Curse" Nancy is asked to investigate monster sightings at a castle in Bavaria, Castle Finster. Legend has it that the monster has claimed victims for over centuries now, coming back at regular intervals. After some recent sightings, everyone in the castle community is very frightened. Nancy will have to figure out what is true of the legend and whether someone is using this legend for their own purposes.

In the course of her investigation Nancy snoops in a locked cabinet in the office of the mayor of the castle community, Karl Weschler. Here she finds the details about the various employees of the castle. She talks to Jordan Blakesley of Castle Cast right after. This organisation handles the staff for various positions in the castle. Jordan is a very lively woman, talking with a lot of enthusiasm. From her, Nancy learns that Anja Mittelmeier, the castellan at Castle Finster, does not have management experience like she claimed on her resume. She only delivered the mail at Castle Cast. Jordan has various other fun commentaries about topics like travelling and e-mail guides to offer. The e-mail guide becomes important later, when Nancy finds mails that may be forged. You can also ask her about the wizard discount. Sadly this has been discontinued however.
5. In PC game 24, "The Captive Curse", it is wealthy castle owner Markus Boehm, who asks her to investigate mysterious monster sightings at Castle Finster. Nancy finds out that Markus used to date one of the people working at the castle. Who is this former lover of Markus?

Answer: Anja Mittelmeier

Markus Boehm is a very rich man. Besides owning Castle Finster, he has several other houses, one of them he does not even know the location of. He told his realtor to surprise him. When asked what he does, he just says he spends money to make more money. Nancy is to solve the mystery of the monster sightings at Castle Finster as soon as possible, as he has some investors coming in to look at the castle. These investors are very rich, the kind of people that go: "Happy birthday, I bought you that town in France you wanted". Markus does not tend to concern himself with small details, he says that he is like a dinosaur yearbook. He does not do small print. Some of the conversations Nancy has with him are very hilarious, like when Markus shouts at a driver cutting him off or gets somewhat angry at Nancy for actually daring to accuse him of being behind the crime. He tells her: "It is so far out of the Realm of Possibility that it has crossed the sea of You Are Wrong and landed in the Realm of Ludicrous Accusations. Good hustle though".

During her investigation Nancy learns that Markus used to to date Anja Mittelmeier, the castellan of Castle Finster. Apparently the relationship did not end well, although both are claiming to be fine with it now. At the end it is revealed that Anja was angry for Markus leaving her for some blonde that really got to him, while she encouraged him to be who he is now. She got so angry that all she wanted is revenge. She used the legend about the monster to scare people, faking emails in which Markus suggests that he is behind the monster sightings.
6. In PC game 17 "Legend of the Crystal Skull" Nancy goes to New Orleans with her best friend Bess Marvin. As a favour to her boyfriend Ned Nickerson, she looks up a friend of his, Henry Bolet. Henry's uncle Bruno Bolet has just died. When Nancy arrives at the mansion, weird things start to happen very soon and Bruno's death may very well not have been a natural one. What profession did Bruno Bolet used to have, that also plays a part in the game?

Answer: Dentist

In "Legend of the Crystal Skull" Nancy is on a trip to New Orleans with best friend Bess Marvin. As a favour to her boyfriend Ned Nickerson, she agrees to make a short visit to his friend Henry Bolet, whose uncle Bruno Bolet has recently died. When she enters the mansion, she sees a skeleton man in a room, who throws a smoke bomb at her. When she comes to, she is determined to find out what is going on. She soon learns that Bruno Bolet was a very eccentric man. Behind the house is a large cemetery that Bruno was the keeper of. He also had various strange pets, like an iguana called Iggy that steals papers and can be dressed up in various costumes when you leave him a loquat and the alligator Bernie, that Nancy has a particularly scary encounter with.

Bruno used to work as a dentist. One of the puzzles in the game involves finding the right teeth on a book shelf, with the help of a short story. Bruno had a missing eye and had various fake eyeballs, wearing a different one every day. Nancy has to collect these eyeballs in order to trace a legendary crystal skull that Bruno was rumoured to own. Any owner of a crystal skull that dies unexpectedly, will have died under suspicious circumstances, as Nancy learns from expert Beatrice Hotchkiss (formerly seen in "Treasure at the Royal Tower"). Bruno was 96 at the time of his death and seems to have suffered from a heart attack. Nancy however finds out that he had the crystal skull appraised. He was to receive a letter from the appraiser telling him the crystal skull was authentic. Renee Amande, the housekeeper of Bruno Bolet, switched that letter with one saying the skull was a fake, therefore causing Bruno's fatal heart attack.
7. In PC game 17, "Legend of the Crystal Skull", Nancy goes to visit Henry Bolet, a friend of Nancy's boyfriend Ned Nickerson, to see if he is ok after the recent death of his uncle Bruno. Soon she is caught up in mystery and the chase after a legendary crystal skull. While investigating Nancy learns more about Henry's girlfriend, a very demanding person. What is her name?

Answer: Summer

Henry Bolet is a bit of a loner, with a goth appearance. He lost his parents in a car accident, when he was still young. From that time on, he lived with his uncle Bruno, a bit of an eccentric person. Henry was sent off soon to boarding school and later an academy, so he feels he never really had any quality time with his uncle. He still feels very bad about the death of his parents, as is evidenced when Nancy finds him in tears in front of the crypt where his parents are buried. Nancy discovers later on that Bruno actually cared deeply for Henry. When he was dying, he instructed his best friend Gilbert Buford, a doctor, to hide the painting of Henry's parents in the crypt. This way only Henry could find it. It would help him on the path to discovering the crystal skull that Bruno owned. Henry was very touched at the end of the game that his uncle made this gesture, although the skull is eventually lost, being swallowed by alligator Bernie.

During the game you can find Henry hard at work, trying to settle Bruno's estate, as his official executor. Nancy does discover that Henry sold some of Bruno's stuff to a curio shop called Zeke's, owned by Lamont Warrick. Henry was not authorized to make this sale. He felt he was forced to do so, due to the high demands of his girlfriend Summer. She constantly wanted more things from him and eventually he had trouble getting enough money to meet her constant demands.
8. In PC game 11, "The Curse of Blackmoor Manor", Nancy travels to England to find out why a young bride Linda Penvellyn suddenly hides herself from the world. In the household of the Penvellyns she meets Ethel Bosinny. What is Ethel's task in the household exactly?

Answer: Tutoring Jane Penvellyn

In PC game 11, "The Curse of Blackmoor Manor", Mrs. Petrov, one of Nancy's relations, asks her to find out why her daughter Linda has suddenly decided not to leave her room anymore, hiding from the world. Linda has recently married Hugh Penvellyn and has gone to live with him in the family home, Blackmoor Manor, a somewhat spooky castle located in the moors. The Penvellyn family has a rich history, mostly detailed by the various coats of arms found in the Great Hall. For generations children from the family have been privately tutored, with a strong emphasis on the family history. The Bosinny family has been doing so for years and so Ethel has been chosen to tutor Hugh's eleven year old daughter Jane. It is not her teaching skills that were decisive for that choice, rather the history of her family tutoring the Penvellyns for generations.

Ethel has the rare quality to suddenly turn up somewhere quite unexpectedly. At one point when Nancy exits a secret passageway, she is suddenly there. It happens once again, when Nancy goes down a slide, accessed from the secret passageway. Ethel makes it quite clear she rather would have Nancy gone as her interests conflict with Nancy's. She does not have the power to have Nancy sent home, but if she persists Ethel will not hesitate to press the issue. Nancy later witnesses a strange ritual at night between Ethel and Jane. She ultimately unravels the fact that a secret is hidden in the basement, shielded from the public by various traps. Each Penvellyn is introduced to this secret and is required to help out in safeguarding this secret. It is Ethel's role to help Jane in learning about this secret.
9. In PC game 26, "Tomb of the Lost Queen", Nancy travels to Egypt to jobshadow Professor Jon Boyle at an archaelogical dig near the city of Cairo. Which character from a previous Nancy Drew game has recommended Nancy to Professor Boyle?

Answer: Franklin Rose

In "Tomb of the Lost Queen" Nancy goes to Egypt to work on an archaelogical dig to unearth the secrets of a tomb, believed to be the tomb of one of Egypt's lost queens, Nefertari. She is at the dig to job-shadow Professor Jon Boyle, the leader of the dig. It was Franklin Rose, that recommended her for the position. He is on the board of directors for Beech Hill Museum in Washington D.C. (in the game "Secret of the Scarlet Hand"). In the trunk of Jon Boyle Nancy can read the recommendation letter he has written, which ultimately led to Nancy being accepted as a member of the team.

Professor Boyle does not make much of an appearance in the game. In the opening sequence to the game he is found lying face down in the tent after a sandstorm. He is soon brought to Cairo and when Nancy talks to him on the phone, he reveals he was in fact knocked out by someone. Nancy will have to continue his work on the dig, making use of his notes. In order to find those, she will have to look through the items in his bunk. At first Lily Crewe prevents her from doing so, trying to take leadership over Nancy in Professor Boyle's absence. Nancy naturally perseveres and acquires the notes. In her search for the true tomb, Professor Boyle will assist her over the phone with advice over issues like the black market, "staging" an archaelogical site and an organisation called The Daughters of Nefertari. The injuries of Professor Boyle prove to be healing fast and he returns to the tomb just in time to prevent the culprit koncking Nancy out.
10. In PC game 10, "Secret at Shadow Ranch", Nancy is to visit a ranch in Arizona belonging to the aunt and uncle of her friends Bess and George, the Rawleys. But Bess and George's plane is delayed and soon Nancy is caught up in another mystery involving the appearance of a phantom horse that is glowing. One of her suspects is the Rawleys' head wrangler Tex Britten. Which chore does he give Nancy during the game?

Answer: Putting together a bridle

In "Secret at Shadow Ranch", Nancy is to visit the farm of Ed and Bet Rawley, the aunt and uncle of her friends Bess Marvin and George Fayne in Arizona. Bess and George do not arrive in time, due to their plane having mechanical problems. Nancy notices that the Rawleys aren't there either, as Ed Rawley was bitten by a rattlesnake, having to spend time in hospital. The attack was preceded by the mysterious appearance of a phantom horse. Nancy of course starts the investigation immediately. One of the characters she meets is head wrangler Tex Britten. He isn't exactly a cheerful character, speaking with little enthusiasm. He seems to be fond of seeing the city girls fail at things like riding horses and other farm chores. Unfortunately for Tex, Nancy very much disappoints him in that regard, showing great aptitude in the tasks she has to perform. One of those tasks is putting back together a bridle. He also has her barrel racing and roping to earn her very own lariat and asks her to feed the horses and the chickens.

During the game Nancy finds a letter by a girl named Jane Nash, threatening the Rawleys for firing her at the clothing store they used to own. She finds out Jane is Tex's sister. Tex is none too happy about Nancy's intrusion into his private life. Along the way, Nancy does discover a softer side to Tex. She sees him together with Mary Yazzie, the owner of the local store. She tricks Mary into admitting they are in love. Tex keeps this fact from his employers the Rawleys, as they are not on good terms with Mary, refusing to sell her a plot of land near their property that Mary wants to buy (as it turns out she wants it for the petrified wood found on this property). At the end of the game the Rawleys and Mary work things out and the love between Tex and Mary blossoms.
