Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what online PC game do you, as a monkey, fire darts at balloons?

Answer: Bloons

Made by Ninja Kiwi, "Bloons" has since grown to feature many sequels and spin-offs over the years, usually "Tower Defence" games. In the game you aim with the mouse, charge up your shot, and fire in order to try and pop the most balloons you can. Clearing the screen of balloons will unlock proceeding levels with greater difficulty.

As the games go on, more types of balloons are introduced, more obstacles are added, and the game becomes all the more tricky with puzzles.
2. Taj the Elephant hands out balloons as rewards in which of these Nintendo 64 games?

Answer: Diddy Kong Racing

Across the game, Taj hands out forty-seven balloons in the main adventure and an additional forty-seven for 'Adventure 2' in which the tracks are mirrored. Balloons are necessary in the game since they unlock later areas and tracks. They are only obtained from winning courses.

In addition, racers will come across red, blue, green, and yellow balloons on race courses, and they give projectiles, boosts, hazards, and shields accordingly.
3. What 1984 arcade game (later an NES classic) makes the player use balloons to avoid piranhas?

Answer: Balloon Fight

"Balloon Fight" became a frenetic arcade classic, especially for two players, since it required that you survive in battle against foes trying to pop your balloons to reign supreme. Levels were clear when you knocked your enemies out of the sky, but if both of your balloons were popped, you would fall into the water and get eaten up. "Balloon Fight" quickly got ported to the NES/Famicom and then re-released as an arcade classic on the Game Boy Advance and various Nintendo console shop channels.
4. The Poké Floats stage is played on the backs of Pokémon-shaped balloons in which of these games?

Answer: Super Smash Bros. Melee

A "Melee" exclusive, Poké Floats appears alongside the Pokémon Stadium stage to represent the franchise as a whole, but unlike the stadium level, Poké Floats is much more dynamic and deadly for navigational purposes. In this stage, giant floats shaped like Pokémon cross over the screen, cycling through about a dozen different types in just under four minutes.

It's at this level that Jigglypuff is unlocked. Due to its setup and potential exploits, Poké Floats is generally removed from official tournament play.
5. How many balloons did players start with in Battle Mode in "Mario Kart 64"?

Answer: Three

Balloons only had significance (in this game) in Battle Mode in which two to four players could go head to head on one of four different stages and use item blocks to take each other out. Each player started with three balloons on their kart and simply needed to survive the onslaught. Balloons could be removed for projectile hits (shells) and hazard hits (from bananas and trick blocks). Battle Mode (with balloons) returned in "Double Dash!".
6. An innocuous room full of balloons can be found in which of these video games?

Answer: Resident Evil 7

The balloon room can be found when playing through the birthday video tape in the trailer. During this part of the game, you need to solve a few small puzzles regarding the contents of the tape, and one of those will send you through a corridor in which the floor is covered in inflated balloons.

These have little use in the game, though one non-inflated balloon needs to be inflated using a pipe in one of the walls. Inside will be a Quill Pen.
7. In "Rollercoaster Tycoon" (PC), what could you do to balloons released by guests?

Answer: Pop them

Balloon Shops were some of the very few souvenir-style shops available in the first "Rollercoaster Tycoon" game and one of the only ones altogether to have a drastic effect on how your guests appeared in the park. When purchased, balloons would be held by guests at all times (unless on rides) and, as could always happen, guests could accidentally let their balloons go. Once the balloons reached a certain point, you could pop them by clicking on them (or they would just disappear into the sky). Balloons always appeared in blue as a default colour but could be changed from shop to shop.
8. What is the name of the city in "BioShock Infinite" (PS3, Xbox 360) known to be suspended in the air with propellers and balloons?

Answer: Columbia

The near-entirety of "BioShock Infinite" took American exceptionalism to the extreme and placed itself high up above everyone else, literally setting the city of Columbia (named after the World's Columbian Exposition in 1983 Chicago) in the clouds, letting its people live in the series of skybound sectors.

The effect of this doesn't go unnoticed by the player; at many points in the game, you have the potential of falling off the face of Columbia and at others, you can destroy sections of the city by destroying the balloons (directly or indirectly).
9. In the "Donkey Kong Country" series, balloons are used for which of these?

Answer: Extra lives

In all three "Donkey Kong Country" games for the SNES and the "Returns" follow-ups in later generations, extra lives are counted in balloons, often shaped like the leading Kong's heads, but changing on occasion. Red balloons were valued at one extra life while green ones were two lives and blue ones were three.

Although these balloons were rarer in the original "Donkey Kong Country", only found in levels, sequels allowed players to win more through varied means (like trivia games).
10. Which of these is needed to kill a Balloon Zombie in "Plants vs. Zombies" (PC)?

Answer: Cactus

Balloon Zombies are amongst the more frustrating foes in the original "Plants vs. Zombies" because they can fly over your yard (or anywhere else), subverting your entire game plan by avoiding the flowers. There are a few options though. Using Blovers will allow you to create wind and blow Balloon Zombies off the screen. Likewise, the Cactus can fire projectile spikes to pop balloons.

The Cactus' lily pad counterpart (for the pool) is known as the Cattail. Where does a zombie even get a balloon?
