Answer: Corpse Party

'Corpse Party' is a series of survival horror games set in a haunted school, which the player has to escape, and find their way around by picking up objects and talking to people; however, they risk running into a 'bad end', with horrifying results. The first game in the series was released in 1996, and was remade as a PSP game and released in several chapters.

In the remake, the haunted school is called Heavenly Host Elementary School. A sequel, 'Book of Shadows', is set during the events of the first game. Red Sachiko is a recurring villain; she is the ghost of a little girl killed in 1953, who haunts the school and torments the characters.

The original game features a group of five students: Satoshi (the hero), Ayumi, Yoshiki, Naomi and Yuka.

2. You are on holiday in a creepy town, and you meet a man called James, who tells you that someone sent him a letter claiming to be from his dead wife. The ground is full of cracks, the whole place is shrouded in mist and is home to a mysterious cult known as the Order. Beware of the man with the helmet shaped like a pyramid - he's one tough customer! Which game are you in?

Answer: Silent Hill 2

'Silent Hill 2' is the second game of the 'Silent Hill' series, a survival horror series focused around the titular mysterious town full of lost souls and bizarre monsters, such as Pyramid Head, a humanoid figure with a giant pyramidal helmet and a spear.

It is often considered to be the breakout game of the series. James Sunderland, the protagonist, goes to Silent Hill to investigate after he receives a letter purporting to be from Mary, his dead wife, asking him to meet her in Silent Hill. He meets several other people there, including a stripper called Maria who resembles Mary, and is forced to confront his guilt over Mary's death.

3. You are on a blood-splattered ship with a large group of people, who all seem to have number-related names and are wearing numbered bracelets. You are told that a bomb has been implanted inside you, and you must play a game and solve puzzles correctly, or be blown to bits. One of the girls, June, has psychic powers. Which game are you in?

Answer: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors

'Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors' is part of a trilogy known as the 'Zero Escape' trilogy, and bears similarities to horror films such as 'Cube' and 'Saw', in that a group of random people are trapped together in an enclosed space and have to escape within a time limit.

In this case, they have nine hours, the escape door has the number 9 on it, and the 'game' is known as the Nonary Game because of this. The doors within the ship also have coded locks on them, and only groups of 3-5 people whose bracelet numbers equal the number of the locks may pass through the doors. Each character has a code name related to the number on their bracelet, except for Junpei, the protagonist. One of the characters, Ace, is revealed to have been behind a previous game in which Santa and June, who are siblings were forced to participate, along with several other children. June has the ability to time travel mentally, and is actually sending visions to Junpei in the future from the past Nonary Game in which she participated, to help him solve the present one and allow her to escape from the past game.

4. You are on a blood-splattered mining ship, the Ishimura, surrounded by zombies known as Necromorphs. You meet Isaac Clarke, a systems engineer who has come in response to a distress call, and his colleagues, Zach and Kendra. Isaac asks if you've seen Nicole, his girlfriend. They also mention a strange object called a Marker. What game are you in?

Answer: Dead Space

'Dead Space' is set in the year 2508, when the mining ship Ishimura sends out a distress call while mining the planet Aegis VII. While on Aegis VII, the Ishimura crew retrieved a religious artefact known as the Marker. Isaac Clarke, Kendra Daniels and Zach Hammond are sent to investigate along wit their crew mates on the Kellion, and Isaac has a personal investment in the mission as his girlfriend Nicole is a medical officer aboard the Ishimura. All of the crew of the Kellion are killed by the crew of the Ishimura - who have been transformed into Necromorphs by an alien virus - save for Isaac, Zach and Kendra.

Although Nicole appears on the ship, she is revealed to have committed suicide to save herself from the Necromorphs, and the Nicole that Isaac sees is a hallucination caused by the Marker. Isaac has to use his engineering skills to find a way to escape from the doomed ship.

5. You are in a blood-splattered mansion. You meet a young girl called Jennifer who tells you that the Scissorman is chasing her. The rooms are full of traps, and you can hear girls screaming. Which game are you in?

Answer: Clock Tower

'Clock Tower' is the first game in the 'Clock Tower' series, a series of point-and-click horror games featuring teenage girl protagonists, and involving hiding places and traps which can be used to aid the player. In 'Clock Tower', the protagonist Jennifer Simpson lives in an orphanage in Norway, until she and a group of other girls are adopted by Mr Barrows, a reclusive man who lives in a mansion with a distinctive clock tower.

The plot starts when Jennifer goes to look for Mary, Mr Barrows' wife, and the other girls go missing in the meantime. One of Mary's sons, Bobby, chases Jennifer around throughout the game with a pair of giant scissors and is known as the Scissorman, and his brother Dan is a giant purple mutant. Jennifer also appears in the sequel, 'Clock Tower 2'.

6. You are in a fancy house, and meet the owner, a writer called Adrienne. She tells you that the previous owner was a magician who murdered all his wives in gruesome ways, and thinks the house might be haunted by a demon. Her husband Don appears, and seems rather suspicious. There's also a vagrant family living nearby. Which game are you in?

Answer: Phantasmagoria

'Phantasmagoria' is a point-and-click game filmed using live actors and full motion video clips. Adrienne Delaney and her husband Don, a photographer, move into a mansion in New England that was formerly owned by a magician, Zoltan 'Carno' Carnovasch.

While Carno was living in the mansion, he summoned a demon which possessed him and made him kill all five of his wives in various nasty ways, and Adrienne has visions showing how he killed them (such as choking one woman to death with animal guts, and stabbing another one in the eye with a bottle of wine). Adrienne accidentally releases the demon from a mysterious box. Don becomes possessed by the demon, rapes Adrienne and kills the vagrant family living in a nearby barn, along with Mike, a telephone engineer. Adrienne manages to seal the demon once more after she kills Don and it escapes from his body.

7. You are in a blood-splattered pizza parlour...wait, what? It seems like an unlikely place for a horror game, but then there are those creepy animatronic animals, two bears, a rabbit, a fox and a chicken. The security guard tells you that when the restaurant is closed at night, the animals come alive - and they're out to get you! What game are you in?

Answer: Five Nights at Freddy's

'Five Nights at Freddy's' is set in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a fictional pizza restaurant chain based on Chuck E Cheese's, with animatronic mascots that come alive at night. The player plays as a security guard, Mike Schmidt, and monitors the mascots through security cameras.

As well as Freddy Fazbear, the other mascots are Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, Foxy the Pirate Fox and Golden Freddy. Because humans are not supposed to be in the restaurant after closing time, the mascots mistake Mike for an endoskeleton and want to stuff him into a mascot suit.

They are revealed to be possessed by the spirits of dead children. If the player runs out of electricity, the lights will go out and Freddy will appear and attack. The franchise has spawned several spin-off novels and parodies, including a Wario parody.

8. You are in a small Japanese village, and you meet a group of children, including a pair of green-haired twins and a little girl, Rika, who seems far more mature than she lets on. The children tell you about Oyashiro-sama, the local goddess. There is a general air of paranoia, and there's a nasty disease going round called Hinamizawa Syndrome - if you catch it, you'll go mad and end up clawing out your own throat! Which game are you in?

Answer: Higurashi When They Cry

'Higurashi When They Cry' is a murder mystery game/visual novel set in the fictional Japanese village of Hinamizawa in the '80s. It is divided into chapters, with the first four being 'question' arcs and the latter four being 'answer' arcs, which provide solutions to the 'question' arcs. Each chapter takes place in the summer of 1983, when a local festival known as the Watanagashi Festival takes place and focuses on Keiichi Maebara, a newcomer to the village, and his classmates: Rena Ryugu, Satoko Hojo, Rika Furude, and twins Shion and Mion Sonozaki, who are often mistaken for each other. Murders occur around the time of the festival, some as the result of a disease called Hinamizawa Syndrome, which causes its victims to become paranoid and violent, hallucinate and commit suicide by clawing out their own throats.

It is later revealed that the story is occurring within a time loop and that Rika, a shrine maiden who is one of the recurring victims, is trying to find out who killed her, and is repeating the time loop with the help of Hanyuu, a spirit who only she can see. Because she has lived through the same period several times over, she is mentally much older than she appears. 'Higurashi When They Cry' was made into an anime by Studio DEEN in 2006, and a live action film in 2008.

9. You are in an English city, Wellington Wells, but something isn't quite right. Everyone seems abnormally cheerful, even the police, and has white faces. A creepy man called Uncle Jack frequently appears on TV. You meet three people, Arthur, Sally and Ollie, and they tell you that the people are all addicted to a drug called Joy, which causes them to hallucinate. Which game are you in?

Answer: We Happy Few

'We Happy Few' is set in an alternative universe where the US did not participate in the Second World War, the UK was defeated in the Battle of Britain and was occupied by the Germans. The fictional town of Wellington Wells is based on an island, and the people there did a 'Very Bad Thing' which forced the occupiers out.

However, they were so wracked with guilt over the Very Bad Thing that they became isolated and started taking a new hallucinogen called Joy, which causes constant euphoria and makes things seem better than they are (e.g. making rotten food look edible). People who do not take Joy are called 'Downers' and are exiled or murdered. Uncle Jack is a Big Brother-like figure who regularly broadcasts propaganda, and former censor Arthur, chemist Sally and Scottish soldier Ollie are the three playable characters, who are all trying to escape.

10. You are in an underwater city filled with mutants known as Splicers, and run by the tycoon Andrew Ryan. You encounter a man called Jack, creepy little girls with glowing eyes known as Little Sisters, and their protectors, the Big Daddies. Jack mentions something called ADAM, which has the power to mutate people's bodies. Which game are you in?

Answer: BioShock

'BioShock' is set in the '60s in an underwater city, Rapture, created as an Objectivist utopia by the billionaire Andrew Ryan for the elite to live outside government control. ADAM is a mutagen created by sea slugs which rewrites users' genetic material. Frank Fontaine, a corrupt businessman, mass-produces ADAM in the hope of sparking a coup and sells it on the black market by implanting sea slugs into the bodies of little girls, who are known as Little Sisters and tasked with retrieving ADAM from the bodies of dead Splicers.

The Big Daddies are men whose bodies have been mutilated and placed inside special suits, and act as protectors for the Little Sisters. Splicers are hideous mutants created by Ryan to act as his personal army. Jack accidentally enters Rapture after crash-landing in the Atlantic, and Fontaine, adopting the persona of Atlas, enlists Jack to kill Ryan.
