Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first stage of the game, Gangplank Galleon, was also the last stage of the first "Donkey Kong Country" game.

Answer: True

In the end of the original game, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong needed to fight K. Rool on the evil leader's pirate ship, the Gangplank Galleon, and in between the two games, the boat seems to have grown significantly in size. Now, as a host of half a dozen different levels (and, evidently, a cast of Kongs), the ship has taken on a new life as the first stage of this second game. All of the stages are themed around the deck, mast, and hold...and when the Kongs are done there, things will take a bit of a turn.
2. Which animal companion appears in the game's first level, Pirate Panic?

Answer: Rambi

Pirate Panic places Diddy and Dixie on the deck of the Gangplank Galleon, and since it's the first level there are very few opportunities to lose out unless you're running directly into enemies...and even then, the majority of the crew is Klomps and Klobbers. Halfway through the level, you can find Rambi waiting in a crate and put him to good use smashing through the area.

In fact, one of the bonus stages is only accessible by smashing through a ship wall. Coincidentally, Rambi was also the first animal buddy to appear in the first "Donkey Kong Country".
3. In the Mainbrace Mayhem level, the Kongs need to travel in which direction to reach the end of the stage?

Answer: Upward

In a general first for the "Donkey Kong Country" series (on the SNES, at least), the goal of the stage is near the top, and the Kongs have to zig-zag their way upward to the finishing platform. This level is the first of quite a few to take place almost entirely on rigging, forcing the Kongs to climb rope ladders and cross wooden platforms along their way-- it's no longer a simple left-to-right platformer.

This is also the first level of this game to include Klingers, Kremlings with the ability to slide up and down ropes.
4. Which barrel appears for the first time in the "Donkey Kong Country" series in Gangplank Galley?

Answer: Invincibility Barrel

The Invincibility Barrel appears in a fairly apparent spot in the latter half of the Gangplank Galley stage, a level with large, open gaps in the deck of the Gangplank Galleon. Hitting the barrel, marked with an exclamation mark, will make the Kongs flash and allow them to run through any enemies in their way. Doing this is the only way to get to a high-up Bonus Barrel in the same level.

The Invincibility Barrel is one of the rarer ones to appear in the game, likely due to its strength. This one is the only one in the Gangplank Galleon section of the game.
5. Kong Kollege is visited for the first time in the series in Gangplank Galleon. Who makes their home at this location?

Answer: Wrinkly

While Candy Kong was responsible for all of the save points found in the first game, the role is taken over by Wrinkly Kong, a grandmotherly figure, in the Kong Kollege of "Donkey Kong Country 2". The only catch with saving in this game is that after the first visit to Kong Kollege, you'll be required to pay two Banana Coins to do so; in the first game it was always free. Knowledge is power, and power comes at a cost.

The first Kong Kollege is found after the second stage of the game.
6. Which of these must Diddy and Dixie do in Lockjaw's Locker?

Answer: Swim

Lockjaw's Locker is the first level of the game to involve swimming and, as such, it contains Enguarde the Swordfish (and more than once at that). Taking place in the hold of the ship (and being the only level to do so in Gangplank Galleon), Lockjaw's Locker sends the Kongs through rising and lowering levels of water avoiding Flotsams (sting rays), Lockjaws (piranhas), and Shuris (starfish). Most of the later water stages get more difficult, including bouts with hot water, darkened pathways, and other tricky obstacles.
7. Swanky Kong makes his first appearance in Gangplank Galleon. Which of these is not a reward from his game?

Answer: Five-up balloon

Swanky Kong first appears at his Showcase after Lockjaw's Locker, and answering three questions from each of his multiple-choice question sets will result in extra lives. Swanky's question sets rise in difficulty the further along you go-- there's an easy set, a medium set, and a hard set. Each one will result in more lives, but each one also costs more Banana Coins to play. Swanky appears in every stage of the game except the last one, and he returns again in "Donkey Kong Country 3".
8. Topsail Trouble is the first level of the game to feature what newly-debuting animal buddy?

Answer: Rattly

Rattly the Snake appears for the first time in this stage, right at the start, and his power to jump extremely high is quite the helpful trick in Topsail Trouble, another rigging level in which the Kongs need to head upward to the goal, leaping from platform to platform. Rattly is only available to the player in the first half of the level, and as you keep going upward, Zingers start to appear on the ropes. Rattly doesn't return until the third stage of the game, Krem Quay.
9. Does Funky Kong appear in Gangplank Galleon?

Answer: Yes

Funky appears toward the very end of the stage, which isn't too difficult to bear considering you can't travel from location to location until you've unlocked other stages of the game. Like in the first "Donkey Kong Country", Funky allows the Kongs to use his barrel plane to move from stage to stage, but only those they've been to.

In this game, however, Banana Coins are an integral part of the economy, and it will cost two of this important currency to catch a flight at any time. Funky Kong appears before the boss, and after Topsail Trouble.
10. The final boss of Gangplank Galleon is Krow. With what do you defeat him?

Answer: Eggs

In perhaps the more confusing of all the boss battles out there, your first boss of this game sends the Kongs to the crow's nest of the Gangplank Galleon to battle a large Mini-Necky. During this battle you need to get four shots in against the bird as he tries to knock into the Kongs and drop giant eggs on them. Every once in a while, the eggs will fall to the ground intact and the Kongs can pick them up (like a barrel) to toss at their flying foe. Don't worry though...Krow will be back.
