Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of an enemy faction: Germanium - Thorium.

Answer: Geth

The geth were the main enemy faction in "Mass Effect". They returned with reduced roles in "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3". The geth were created by the quarians 300 years before the events of "Mass Effect", and were one of the very few intelligent synthetic species.
2. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of one of Shepard's squad members: Tantalum - Lithium.

Answer: Tali

Tali was a quarian woman, and one of Shepard's squadmembers in all three games. She had an aptitude for nearly anything mechanical, which could be very useful on the battlefield. Her preferred weapon was the shotgun.
3. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of a species: Arsenic - Argon - Iodine.

Answer: Asari

The asari were a single-gendered race that resembled blue human women with "hair tentacles". They had one of the longest natural lifespans of any species, reaching about one millennium. They were known for their natural biotics, and their role as diplomats and peacekeepers in Citadel space.
4. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of Shepard's starting weapon: Lanthanum - Nitrogen - Carbon - Erbium.

Answer: Lancer

The Lancer was an assault rifle that Shepard started with in "Mass Effect". It looked quite similar to the Avenger, which was the initial assault rifle in the next two games. The Lancer made a comeback in the "Citadel" DLC for "Mass Effect 3".
5. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of an enemy unit: Hydrogen - Uranium - Sulphur - Potassium.

Answer: Husk

When human bodies were impaled upon devices called Dragon's Teeth, they slowly turned into Husks. Husks were light, fast moving enemies that would rush their targets to melee them, without any regard for their own well-being. It was initially thought that the geth were responsible for the technology to create Husks, but it later turned out that they had being given the devices by the Reapers.
6. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of a power: Tungsten - Argon - Phosphorus.

Answer: Warp

Warp was a biotic ability that appeared in all three games. In "Mass Effect", it dealt damage over time to a target. In the later instalments, it did a base amount of biotic damage to a target upon impact, and could set up or set off biotic detonations. The damage-over-time ability became Reave. In all the games, Warp was a staple biotic power.
7. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of a planet that Shepard visited: Fluorine - Erbium - Osmium.

Answer: Feros

Feros was one of the main worlds Shepard traveled to in "Mass Effect". Feros was home to the Thorian, from which Shepard acquired the Cipher. The Cipher was the "essence of being a prothean", and was required to interpret the visions from the prothean beacon correctly.
8. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of a skill area: Boron - Iodine - Oxygen - Titanium - Cesium.

Answer: Biotics

All abilities in "Mass Effect" fell into one of three skill areas: combat, tech, and biotics. Characters who used biotics could manipulate mass effect fields to distort spacetime. This let them pick enemies up off the floor, and throw them around, and do other neat things.

Humans did not naturally have biotics, but could gain them from being exposed to element zero. Those with biotic abilities were feared by the majority of the human populace, but were readily welcomed by the military. Other species also had outliers that could use biotics. The exceptions were the asari, who all naturally had the ability to manipulate mass effect fields.
9. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of the devices used to traverse the galaxy: Rhenium - Lanthanum - Yttrium - Sulphur.

Answer: Relays

The Mass Relays were large devices hanging in space. They came in pairs, and allowed ships to jump from point to point around the galaxy. At a primary nexus of relays, was the Citadel, which became the seat of galactic power. Unbeknownst to anyone, the Mass Relays and Citadel were created by the Reapers to coerce organic civilizations to develop their technology along predictable lines that the Reapers could later exploit.
10. Use the symbols of the elements to spell the name of an ancient species: Radium - Carbon - Hydrogen - Nickel.

Answer: Rachni

The Rachni were a bug-like species with a telepathic hive mind. They became incredibly aggressive during the Rachni Wars. The Citadel Council was being pushed back until the salarians uplifted the krogan. The krogan had the numbers and were hardy enough to assault the hostile rachni worlds. Ultimately, the rachni were declared extinct.

The rachni were not known for being naturally aggressive, and it was later speculated that they were forced to attack the Citadel species by the Reapers.
