Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ultimately about heroes battling against evil, some of the tougher enemies bear names such as Ultima. Suggesting Greek inspiration, which tough evil usually has a robotic spider form?

Answer: Omega

Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet which ties in with Ultima, which means the last syllable of a word. Ultima typically has a dragon-like form in 'Final Fantasy' games and both pop up throughout the series. Acca, ee-greck and zeta are respectively the Italian, French and Spanish pronunciations of the letters 'h', 'y' and 'z'.
2. Which of the following Arthurian weapons reoccurs through the 'Final Fantasy' series in various forms, mainly as a weapon or an ability?

Answer: Excalibur

Excalibur was King Arthur's war sword which replaced the broken Clarent, the sword pulled by Arthur from the stone. Carnwennan was his dagger and Caliburn, his sword of peace stolen by Mordred and used to kill Arthur.

Masamune is another recurring 'Final Fantasy' weapon, which takes its name after the Japanese swordsmith.
3. Thought to have a Star Wars connection, these two characters appear typically in soldier or guard roles in a number of the 'Final Fantasy' instalments. Which pair are they?

Answer: Biggs and Wedge

First appearing in 'Final Fantasy VI', they are considered to have been created in homage of the characters Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles from the "Star Wars" series. Both were wingmen to Luke Skywalker on the attack on the first Death Star. Wedge survived that and appeared in two other "Star Wars" films.

The other answers were all of police duos appearing in films of the same name, except for Riggs and Murtaugh of the "Lethal Weapon" film series.
4. This race of typically-flightless birds appear in most of the 'Final Fantasy' games, often providing a method of long-distance travel for characters. Suggestive of edible music, what is the name of this race?

Answer: Chocobo

Comparisons have been made between the Gastornis genus of prehistoric bird and the chocobo, however the inspiration is probably the mascot for a brand of Morinaga chocolate. The design of this mascot known as Kyorochan is said to be based on the Gastornis genus.
5. Name the final boss (computer-controlled enemy) in the original ''Final Fantasy'. He was once called Garland. Confused?

Answer: Chaos

Having the form of a large winged demon-like creature, he was once an evil knight named Garland. A time-loop is involved and unfortunately as a result Garland becomes immortal. The names Chaos and Garland make appearances in later instalments.
6. This multi-armed warrior first appearing in 'Final Fantasy V' is named after a Sumerian king. Who is he?

Answer: Gilgamesh

Although most people have more than one arm, the 'Final Fantasy' Gilgamesh has typically eight arms, wielding numerous weapons. The Sumerian king is the subject of an epic poem dating to 2100 BC, considered by some to be the first great work of literature.
7. Typically featuring wings, fur and a pom-pom, what is the name of this diminutive race?

Answer: Moogle

Occurring in virtually every main game version since 'Final Fantasy II', the moogles are known for the cry "Kupo". They have taken on a variety of roles in the different games with some (Mog, Stiltzkin, Artemicion and Montblanc, for example) making repeated appearances. The other answers are capital cities.
8. Another of the big evils encountered in the series 'Final Fantasy' is sometimes known as the Dragon King. It has a non-game counterpart in Arabian mythology as a vast fish, being one of the layers which supports the Earth. What is the name of the fish?

Answer: Bahamot

With its dragon-form, Bahamot is probably more akin to the dragon deity of the same name from 'Dungeons & Dragons'. The others are from Greek mythology: Arachne (mother of all spiders), Chiron (a wise centaur) and Manticore (a lion with the head of a man and a tail which can shoot spikes).
9. Amongst the ranks of summoned monsters is the elemental monster representing fire, which appears throughout the series. The name for this is borrowed from Arabian mythology where it is a class of jinn. What name is used in the game series?

Answer: Ifrit

Many of the summoned monsters draw their names from classic mythology including Arabian, Egyptian, Mesoamerican and Hindu mythology. In Arabian mythology the Ifrits are known for their strength and cunning. The other mythological creatures listed come from the Aztecs.
10. Appearing in various roles in most of the 'Final Fantasy' games, his roles are usually tied in some way to airships. What is his name, shared with that of a Spanish warrior?

Answer: Cid

The Spanish warrior was El Cid. Now a trademark of the 'Final Fantasy' franchise, Cid appears in virtually all game-related material. First appearing in 'Final Fantasy II', he was retrospectively added to some versions of the original game. His appearance and age typically changes in each version and ranges from a name mention through to being a major playable character (such as the sword-wielding pilot Cid Highwind in 'Final Fantasy VII').
