1. Which game was the "Star Wars" entry into the fighting game genre?

Answer: Masters of the Teras Kasi (1997)

"Masters of the Teräs Käsi" was released only on the PlayStation, and was one of the worst received "Star Wars" games ever created. It was billed as a fighting game, similar to "Street Fighter" and "Mortal Kombat," but was not polished. Fighting games are fast-paced and very precise, so this poorly-tuned game did not match up well with other contemporary fighting games. The term "Teräs Käsi" as a term for a particular type of martial art in the "Star Wars" universe would occasionally come up in other media.

Answer: Bounty Hunter (2002)

"Bounty Hunter" was released on PS2 and GameCube in the same year as "Attack of the Clones." In this game, players took control of Janjo Fett, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, in a series of missions. The game featured Jango's iconic dual pistols, jetpack, and other gadgets. Players could scan non-player characters to see if there were outstanding bounties on them, and capture or kill them for additional credits. The game ended with Jango meeting Count Dooku and becoming the template for the republic's clone army.

"TIE Fighter" was released one year after "Star Wars: X-Wing," and used the same game engine. It was novel at the time for letting players play as the "bad guys." Players did fly against the Rebel Alliance, but also fought pirates, help settle regional disputes, and dealt with traitors within the Empire. The game was re-released in 1998 as a Collector's CD-ROM, with updated graphics.

Wedge Antilles was a well-known pilot, famous for surviving two Death Star battles, the Battle of Hoth, and many other engagements. He also was part of the original Rogue Squadron, and was the founder for the new one. Dash Rendar was a smuggler featured in the "Shadows of the Empire" novel and game (as the player character). Carth Onasi was a character from the "Knights of the Old Republic" as the first permanent character to join your party (second character after Trask Ulgo, but he died at the beginning of the game).

"Shadows of the Empire", released on N64 and PC, was a part of the first major "Star Wars" multimedia project. There was a novel, a comic, a game, a soundtrack, action figures, and more. The story linked "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi", with the heroes tracking down Han Solo and the Empire building the second Death Star. The novel even had Bothan spies help uncover plans for the second Death Star and then get murdered, explaining Mon Mothma's line in "Return of the Jedi". The video game let players play as Dash Rendar, who was basically a stand-in for the Han Solo character while the real Han was in carbonite.

"Galactic Battlegrounds" was a "Star Wars" retheme of the critically acclaimed "Age of Empires II," released on the PC. It was developed by Ensemble Studios and used the the Genie game engine (the same team and engine as "Age of Empires II"). Players controlled a civilization, and could mix and match different eras and allegiances (for example, the Rebel Alliance could ally with the Galactic Empire against the Trade Federation and the Wookiees). The expansion, "Clone Campaigns", was released with content from "Attack of the Clones", two days before the film's release.

"Rogue Squadron" was released for the N64 and PC. The first "Star Wars" game to be released on the N64 was "Shadows of the Empire." Most of that game's ten missions had players controlling the smuggler Dash Rendar on foot, but the opening level let players fly an airspeeder during the Battle of Hoth. The opening level was so good that it inspired the second N64 game, "Rogue Squadron." "Rogue Squadron" was released one year before "The Phantom Menace," so they were able to secretly include the Naboo Starfighter as a flyable ship. After the movie was released, the cheat code to unlock the Naboo Starfighter was revealed.

"Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy" was released on PC, Mac, and Xbox. It was the last entry in the "Dark Forces"/"Jedi Knight" series. Players took control of a new character, Jaden Korr, who started the game with a lightsaber. Players could choose Jaden's species, gender, lightsaber hilt, and lightsaber colour. The game was less linear than previous installments, with Jaden able to tackle self-contained missions in any order between major plot points. Like previous titles, players could pursue either a Light Side or Dark Side ending, though the Light Side ending was considered canon. Two novels, "Crosscurrent" and "Riptide," were released in 2011 featuring Jaden Korr as the protagonist. In these novels, Jaden was a human male.
