"Final Fantasy VI": A True Classic Quiz

As an editor, I've seen a couple quizzes arguing that "Final Fantasy VII" is the best game ever. My vote remains for "Final Fantasy VI". Whatever your opinion, learn about or test your knowledge of the SNES version of this great Squaresoft game!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jidoor is one of the more interesting towns of the game with several attractions for its residents and visitors. Throughout the game, which can Jidoor not boast of having?

Answer: A nearby colisseum

Jidoor's auction house contains several random items. Some are useful, such as Magicite and relics. Others aren't, such as an Imp Robot and 1/1200 of an airship. The latter two cannot be purchased by the player, even if the player has over 1,000,000 GP! Owzer owns a mansion in the northern part of Jidoor with several paintings, complete with a not-so-still still life of flowers! The Opera House near Jidoor offers two boss battles, one with Ultros the octopus and one with the Dirt Dragon. The colisseum is north of Kohlingen in the World of Ruin, where you can bet your items in hopes of acquiring better (or sometimes worse) quality items by winning a battle.
2. Strago, an old man from Thamasa, challenged a monster with his friend Gungho in his younger days. What is the name of this monster?

Answer: Hidon

The Hidon will teach Strago one of his more powerful lores, the GrandTrain (as long as you don't beat him too quickly). Phunbaba is fought in Mobliz a few times before his defeat. Doom Gaze is fought randomly in the sky in the World of Ruin; he carries the Bahamut magicite shard. Chupon is unbeatable.

The last time you beat Ultros on the way to the Floating Continent is the first time you meet Chupon. He sneezes the party away. You can also fight Chupon in the colisseum north of Kohlingen in the World of Ruin, but according to Squaresoft, it is impossible to win.
3. After the battle with Ultros in the Lete River, the party splits into three groups. How many party members are there in all in these three groups (before actually doing their scenarios)?

Answer: 5

Terra, the main character of the game is with Banon, leader of the resistance to the empire, and Edgar, king of Figaro. In the second "group", Locke, the thief/treasure hunter is by himself. He is joined by Celes before rejoining Terra and the others. Sabin begins alone in the third "group". He will be joined by Cyan the swordsman (a.k.a. "Mr. Thou") and Gau, a feral child in the Veldt.
After everyone meets in Narshe, it's time to protect Banon from the empire onslaught.
4. There is only one Esper who teaches the spell "Meteor".

Answer: False

Meteor can be learned from Odin at the slow growth rate of x1, meaning it takes 100 magic points to learn. After beating the eight dragons, the player gets the Esper Crusader. Crusader teaches Meteor at the much faster rate of x10, meaning only ten magic points are needed to learn it from him.
5. Which of these is the correct spelling of the spell used to redirect magic to the enemy?

Answer: Rflect

Rflect can be learned at a rate of x5 from the Esper Carbunkl. Rflect's effect can be duplicated through the use of the Wall Ring relic. The Wall Ring is invaluable in the Fanatics' Tower in the World of Ruin.
6. Which of these is a subject taught at the school in Narshe?

Answer: Environmental Science

The Environmental Science classroom is one of three classrooms in the school in Narshe. At the school, you can learn about the basic rules of the game. If you go to the third room, the advanced battle room, at the beginning of the game, you may have no clue what the teachers are talking about! Don't worry, it'll make sense in time.
7. Which of these button combinations, when used with the Blitz command, will not result in a move? (If you have the Playstation remake, A=Circle, X=Triangle, and Y=Square).

Answer: Up to Down (clockwise), A

The first of Sabin's eight Blitzes is the Pummel, activated with Left, Right, Left, A. X, Y, Down, Up, A is the Suplex, Sabin's third Blitz. His fourth Blitz is Left to Right (counterclockwise), A. This is the Fire Dance. Up to Down (clockwise), A is almost the Air Lance, his sixth Blitz. Completing this one requires Up to Left (clockwise), A (three quarters of the way around the directional pad).
8. Which of Edgar's tools may cause instant death for an enemy?

Answer: Chain Saw

The Chain Saw has two attacks: one takes hit points away (a standard attack), and the other kills the enemy in one hit. The effect is random, so the Chain Saw may be ineffective against enemies immune to instant death, such as bosses. The debilitator is effective in supporting your magic casters during boss battles. True to its name, the debilitator makes an enemy weak against one of the elements, such as Wind, Fire, or Ice.
9. In which of these towns is the party never attacked by enemies?

Answer: Nikeah

It probably would have been easier if I had included Narshe and Zozo as incorrect choices; enemies attack there all the time! During Locke's scenario in particular is when enemies attack in South Figaro. The burning building in Thamasa contains several annoying Balloons to fight, and Owzer's mansion in Jidoor is chock-full of random and non-random battles.
10. Setzer's Joker Doom inevitably results in a Game Over for the player.

Answer: False

Joker Doom, a 7-7-Bar combination on Setzer's slot machine, kills all members of both parties. Most likely a player won't be prepared for this; it's pretty rare. However, Life 3 is one way to get the last laugh when this happens as it revives a character instantly upon dying. Also, if a character is airborne (because of a Jump command or the Esper Palidor), no battlefield attack will effect that character. Thanks for playing!
