Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of all 493, Ghost types are the least plentiful.

Answer: True

In the first four generations there are a total of eighteen Ghost Pokemon. In actuality, Ghost types and Dragon types are very similar in their introductions. In "Pokemon Red/Blue" there were only three Ghost types and three Dragon types. It was the same way in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" where only one new Dragon type was introduced and one new Ghost type was introduced.

It wouldn't be until "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire" for the Game Boy Advance that Ghosts and Dragon types would move into the double digits. Ghost types as stated in the introduction are not affected by Normal and Fighting type moves. That was the norm until moves such as Foresight and Odor Sleuth were introduced.

In the same way, Ghosts share the same weaknesses as Psychic types except for Bug-type moves.
2. All the Ghost Pokemon that appeared in "Pokemon Red/Blue" were part Ghost and part what other type?

Answer: Poison

Three Ghost Pokemon appeared in "Pokemon Red/Blue" and those were Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar. Ghosts are super-effective against Psychic types but unfortunately since Poison is weak to Psychic and Ghosts aren't resistant to Psychic this made the Saffron City Gym very difficult to defeat.

The only other types Psychics were weak to in "Pokemon Red/Blue" were Bugs and most of the Pokemon that had Bug type moves were part Bug and part Poison which then again made the gym difficult. As Ghost-types go, they were only weak to themselves. Psychics and Ghosts though were put on a more equal playing field with the inclusion of Dark types in "Pokemon Gold/Silver." Dark types were not affected at all by Psychic types and were resistant to Ghost types. Dark types are weak only against Fighting type moves and Bug type moves.

The three poisonous Ghosts were the main Ghost Pokemon in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" as the only new ghost introduced was pure-Ghost type Misdreavus, and could only be found in the last dungeon, Mt. Silver.

It wouldn't be until "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire" that players could get pure-Ghost types halfway through the game. Shuppets would appear more frequently in "Pokemon Sapphire" where Duskulls would appear more frequently in "Pokemon Ruby."
3. Which one of the following items does not relate to Ghost-types?

Answer: Dread Plate

The Dread Plate much like the other sixteen Plates (there is no Normal Plate) increases the power of a certain type. The Dread Plate increases the power of Dark-type moves and when attached to Arceus allows it to become a Dark-type. The Spell Tag increases the power of Ghost-type moves as does the Spooky Plate.

The Reaper Cloth and the Griseous Orb only pertain to one certain Ghost-type Pokemon though. When Dusclops, the evolved form of Duskull, is holding a Reaper Cloth and is traded it evolves into Dusknoir.

This change was made in the fourth generation. Originally, Dusclops was Duskull's final form. The Griseous Orb was another one of those weird items that was introduced in "Pokemon Platinum" but not "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl." The Griseous Orb when held by Ghost/Dragon Giratina allows it to stay in it's Origin Forme as it's found in the Distortion World. If it's outside the Distortion World it become it's Altered Forme which was how it appeared in "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl." The only real difference between the two, besides appearance, is that Origin Forme Giratina has the ability Levitate, while Altered Forme Giratina has the ability Pressure. If you transfer a certain Arceus over to "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold," and go to the Ruins of Alph, you'll be able to go to a secret area called the Sinjoh Ruins.

When at the altar with only Arceus in your party, you can either create Dialga, Palkia, or Giratina all at level one holding the orb that pertains to them specifically. If you choose Giratina, it will be holding the Griseous Orb. Also if you pre-ordered "Pokemon Platinum" you would get a small figurine showing Giratina in it's Origin Forme.
4. Out of the seventeen types of Pokemon, how many types can be combined with a Ghost type so that they have no weakness? (Note: Don't take into account moves or abilities.)

Answer: One

The only type that can be combined with a Ghost type so that it will have no weakness is Dark. Ghost types are weak to Ghost and Dark types, which Dark Pokemon have a resistance to both. Dark types are weak to Bug and Fighting types. Ghosts are resistant to Bugs and are not affected by Fighting types at all unless the opposing Pokemon uses Odor Sleuth or Foresight. So since both types are resistant against the weaknesses of the other there are no weaknesses. Surprisingly enough, there are two Ghost Pokemon who have this type combination and up to "Pokemon SoulSilver/HeartGold" they are the only Pokemon that have no weakness.

The first of these two Pokemon is Sableye who was originally only found in "Pokemon Sapphire." Mawile, a pure Steel type, was the Pokemon found opposite to Sableye in "Pokemon Ruby." The other Pokemon that is a Ghost/Dark type first appeared in "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl" and is named Spiritomb. Spiritomb may be more easily recognized than Sableye, as Cynthia the Pokemon Champion from the fourth generation leads with a Spiritomb and that the way to catch a Spiritomb is very odd. On Route 209 in the Sinnoh Region there is an old crumbling tower known as the Hallowed Tower. If you set the item known as the Odd Keystone in the tower, Spiritomb will appear. That is, it will appear after you've talked to thirty-two other players in the wireless network in the area known as the Underground. Also talking to Roark and the many people that sell items for gems do not count. So in "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum" if you wanted a Spiritomb you would either have to have a friend or two different cartridges.

However, in "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver" you could catch a Spiritomb on the Pokewalker Route the Quiet Cave.
5. How many Ghost types are impervious to Ground type attacks? (Note: Do not take into account attacks such as Gravity or Gastro Acid. Also assume that Giratina is in Origin Form.)

Answer: Eleven

Levitate was a common ability that was introduced in "Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire". Even though it is sometimes found on Poison-type Pokemon such as Koffing and Weezing, it is also found on eight Ghost Pokemon. Levitate gives the Pokemon immunity to Ground type moves.

The Ghost Pokemon that know the ability Levitate are: Gastly, Haunter, Gengar, Misdreavus, Duskull, Mismagius, Rotom, and Giratina in Origin Forme. However, that's only eight Ghost Pokemon where the correct answer is eleven. Drifloon and Drifblim were introduced in the Sinnoh region. Both of these Pokemon are Ghost/Flying types and therefore are immune to Ground type moves as well. Drifblim couldn't be found in the wild and Drifloon could only be found at the Valley Windworks, after you clear out Team Galactic, on Fridays.

The last Pokemon that has immunity to Ground type attacks is Shedinja. Shendinja has the ability Wonder Guard which protects it from super-effective attacks. Since neither Ghost nor Bug are weak to Ground attacks, Shedinja can avoid all ground type attacks.

However if a Ground status move such as Spikes is set out, Shedinja is not protected. Some other abilities that certain Ghosts have are Pressure, Frisk, and Aftermath.
6. In "Pokemon Platinum", Rotom was one of the most unique Ghost-types as it could be one of six different forms by entering certain appliances. Which one of the following is NOT one of the appliances Rotom could enter?

Answer: freezer

Rotom can change into six different forms but only if you got the Secret Key via a Wi-Fi event. Once you get the Secret Key, you can enter a secret room in the Team Galactic Building in Eterna City, once you have defeated Team Galactic in the building. Rotom is an Electric/Ghost type and only appears in the Old Chateau just outside of Eterna City.

In "Pokemon Diamond/Pearl," Rotom would only appear in the TV in the Old Chateau after defeating the Elite Four. In "Pokemon Platinum" you could get Rotom as soon as you could enter the Old Chateau.

However, Rotom was only able to undergo changes in form in "Pokemon Platinum." Rotom, like other Ghosts also only has two weaknesses in it's original form as it knows Levitate. Therefore, it's only weaknesses are Ghost and Dark.

As it enters different appliances, it can learn a different move and change appearance into the appliance it entered. If it enters a lawn mower, it can learn Leaf Storm. If it enters a washing machine it can learn Hydro Pump. If it enters a fan it learns Air Slash. If it enters an oven it learns Overheat. Finally, if it enters a refrigerator (not a freezer) it learns Blizzard.

In order to get it back into it's original form, you just have to interact with the appliance that Rotom interacted with last.
7. Agatha, in "Pokemon Red/Blue" was known as the Ghost Master of the Elite Four. Of all her Pokemon, which one of her Pokemon was the only one that could NOT learn a Ghost type move naturally?

Answer: Arbok

Back in the age of "Pokemon Red/Blue" Ghost type attacks were few and far between. The only direct attacks they could learn were Night Shade and Lick. Agatha's Haunter and Gengars could obviously learn Ghost type attacks since they were two of the three Ghost types that were available in the game. Arbok couldn't learn any Ghost type moves naturally but Golbat could learn Confuse Ray, but that's it.

While Agatha, does say she's a Ghost type master, it'd somewhat be more accurate to call her a Poison master since all of her Pokemon are at least part poison, excluding Arbok who is wholly poison. Morty is the same way in Ecruteak City in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" and "Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver".

Instead of passing off non-Ghost Pokemon as Ghosts though, he uses only Ghosts but they're all part Poison.

It wouldn't be until Phoebe in the Hoenn Elite Four that non-Poison Ghost types would be used by a Ghost type trainer.
8. In a special Pokewalker Course called "The Winner's Path" trainers could catch a special Duskull. What move did this Duskull know that it normally can't learn on its own?

Answer: Imprison

"The Winner's Path" was a Pokewalker course that could be downloaded by Wi-Fi and contained rare and unique Pokemon all at level five. The most commonly occurring Pokemon on this route were Magikarp who knew Spalsh and Bounce and Bronzors who knew Tackle, Confusion and Trick Room. Duskull knew Leer, Night Shade, and Imprison. Duskull is unable to learn Imprison either through TMs or Move Tutors but it can learn it through breeding. Imprison is a Psychic type move which doesn't allow opposing Pokemon to use any moves that the user knows.

For example if a Duskull recently caught on "The Winner's Path" was facing another Duskull that knew Leer, Night Shade, and Spite. If "The Winner's Path" Duskull used Imprison the only move the other Duskull could use would be Spite.

Other Pokemon that could be found on this route were Beldum and Horsea.
9. How many Ghost type Pokemon come into existence in some evolution method other than leveling up? (Note: Do not count Rotom and Giratina's alternate forms as evolutions.)

Answer: Five

Those five Pokemon are Gengar, Mismagius, Dusknoir, Shedinja, and Froslass. Gengar was one of the first evolutions you could only obtain by trading in "Pokemon Red/Blue" for the Gameboy. The other ones were Machamp, Golem, and Alakazam. Dusknoir is the only other one that could come into existence by trading. Dusclops holding a Reaper Cloth would make Dusknoir appear. Mismagius can come into existence if you expose Misdreavus to a Dusk Stone.

Another Pokemon that can evolve when exposed to a Dusk Stone is Murkrow who turns into Honchkrow. Froslass on the complete opposite end of the spectrum only comes into existence if you expose a FEMALE Snorunt to a Dawn Stone.

Shedinja the Bug/Ghost type is border line on whether leveling up makes it appear or not. Technically it does appear from leveling up Nincada to a certain level to make it turn into a Ninjask.

The factor that separates it from being a leveled up Pokemon is that in order for Shedinja to appear you must have a Pokeball and an empty space in your team when Nincada evolves into Ninjask.
10. What is the most powerful (in regards of attack power) Ghost type attack?

Answer: Shadow Force

Shadow Ball is probably one of the best known Ghost attacks but it only has an attack power of 80. Shadow Force however, has a whopping attack power of 120. Sadly, Shadow Force is not learned by many Pokemon. The only ones who have been able to learn it are Giratina and a special given away Arceus. Shadow Force as compared to Shadow Ball is a physical attack rather than a Special Attack. With most Ghost Pokemon, Shadow Ball (over all) has the most attack power of Ghost type moves.

In addition, it can lower Special Defense by one level. Shadow Force is like a combination of Fly, Aerial Ace, and Feint combined. Shadow Force causes the Pokemon to disappear for one move, then the Pokemon attacks on the next turn. If a wise trainer tries to use Protect or Detect on the next turn, it won't work as Shadow Force hits even if the Pokemon uses a protective move.

But since it is a Ghost type attack, it will not do damage to Normal types as Ghost type attacks do not affect them.
