Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, in most games, is Mario's primary nemesis?

Answer: Bowser

Nintendo introduced games to Bowser in the original "Super Mario Bros." in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. He has since appeared in numerous titles against Mario, though some, like "Super Mario RPG", he is a playable character.
2. Birdo, according to the original game manual of "Super Mario Bros. 2", thinks he is a girl. What is Birdo's name in Japan?

Answer: Catherine

His backstory has since been retconned by Nintendo, although Birdo is still notable for introducing gender issues into video games all the way back in 1988. The original game manual said that he thought he was a girl and would rather be known as Birdetta. Subsequent printings of the game manual cut the Birdetta line but still said he wished he was a girl.

In the Japanese version of the manual Nintendo states Birdo's name is Catherine but he would rather be known as Cassie.
3. Lakitu, the Koopa of the Clouds, makes his debut in what level of "Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: 4-1

We first encounter Lakitu in World 4-1, where he throws red balls that turned into spiked creatures. Unlike other enemies in the original "Super Mario Bros.", you cannot jump on Spikes.
4. What game introduces us to Wario?

Answer: Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins

The final boss of "Super Mario Land 2" is Wario. According to the backstory, while Mario was busy saving Sarasaland in "Super Mario Land", Wario captured home castle and set up six magic golden coins. The only way to enter the Castle is with by playing the six golden coins into the castle's door. Nintendo would spin Wario off into his own series, where the object of the games is unmitigated greed.
5. How many different colored Birdos appear in "Super Mario Bros. 2"?

Answer: Four

There are four colors of Birdo. The first is Pink Birdo, and fires eggs. The second is Red Birdo, who first appears in 2-2, and shoots eggs and fire. The third is Grey Birdo, and he first appears in 5-1. He fires only fireballs and must be defeated by mushroom blocks.

The last is Green Birdo, first appearing in 6-1. Like the Grey Birdo, fires only fireballs and must be defeated by throwing mushroom blocks at him.
6. What Koopa minion betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom and joined the side of evil?

Answer: Goomba

According to the game manual for "Super Mario Bros.", due to the black magic of King Bowser Koopa, a lot of the Mushroom citizens were turned into blocks and the kingdom has fallen into ruin. Naturally, one such irony is that when Mario breaks bricks, it can be implied he is actually killing the imprisoned Mushroom Kingdom citizens.

However, one citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom joined sides with King Koopa. Here is his entry in the original instruction manual for "Super Mario Bros.".

"Little Goomba
A mushroom who betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom. One stomp and he dies.
(100 pts.)"
Munchers
7. Dodos, a species of birds, have been extinct since the 1700s. However, they get a new lease on life in "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars". Dodo is the servant of what villain from "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars"?

Answer: Valentina

Valentina is plotting to overtake Nimbus Land by imprisoning the King and Queen. She has gotten rid of Mallow, who grew up thinking he was a tadpole, and was intent on passing off Dodo as the real Prince Mallow.
8. In one Mario game, there is a certain enemy you must fight twice. The second time you fight him, he has the ability to clone the characters in your party. What's the villain's name?

Answer: Belome

Belome appears in "Super Mario Bros RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars". Belome is a four eyed monster you fight early in the game in Kero Sewers. Later on, you face him a second time in Belome Temple. On the second fight he has the ability to produce clones of Mario, Mallow, Bowser, Peach, and Geno.
9. One of the RPG titles has an optional side boss that is actually FAR STRONGER than the final boss of the game. What's the boss?

Answer: Culex

Square-Enix developed both "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" and the "Final Fantasy" series. Culex, who lives in Monstro Town, has come from another dimension. If you beat him he will award you the Quartz Crystal, a special accessory. Although he does not appear in any Final Fantasy game, he is often considered as an allusion to that series.

His boss battle features himself and four crystals, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. His sprite also appears similar to the final boss Kefka from "Final Fantasy VI". Culex and his four Crystals comrades actually have far more hit points than Smithy, the final boss of "Super Mario RPG".
10. Appearing in some of Mario's RPG titles, this main villain is known for speaking grammatically incorrect English, make absurd food metaphors, and even using references to the classic Pro-Wrestling quote "A Winner is You!" Who am I talking about?

Answer: Fawful

Fawful first appears in "Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga" as a servant of Cackletta, that title's primary villain. By "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story" he has clawed his way to the top. He is a mechanical genius, though his temper tends to make him rather delusional.
