Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although there are eight worlds, if you play through the game without a certain power up, you will only play six worlds. What item does Mario require to get into World 4 and 7?

Answer: Mini-Mushroom

Unlike previous titles, only six worlds are readily accessible. To enter World 4 and 7, you must defeat the end bosses of those worlds and enter into a lower passage as Mini-Mario. This is the first Mario game to feature Mini-Mushrooms and the Mega-Mushrooms.
2. What Mario move first introduced in the 3D "Super Mario 64" makes its 2D debut in "New Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: Wall Jump

Although the Wall Jump has been around since "Super Mario 64", "New Super Mario Bros." is the first 2D game to feature the move, although there are some slight changes. Mario must slide down for a preset amount of time before he can do a Wall Jump, which is not true of the 3D titles.
3. How many star coins are present in each level?

Answer: Three

Nintendo introduces Star Coins in this game. There are three per level, and while some are easy to spot, others require special power ups or are hidden in not readily visible portions of the stage.
4. How many Star Coins must Mario spend to open a Star Coin Gate?

Answer: Five

It takes five star coins to open a Star Coin gate. Some gates block off Toad Houses. Other gates will open new alternate levels or secret paths. There are thirty two signs in the game.
5. After defeating Bowser in Bowser's Castle, a strange new Toad House appears just above World One. What color is that Toad House?

Answer: Blue

The Blue Toad House appears just north of 1-1. There you can purchase four different backgrounds for the touch screen. These backgrounds cost twenty coins each. If you open all of the Toad houses you will unlock a fifth background background.
6. You are able to play as Luigi in the main game.

Answer: True

If you press and hold L and R and select a file at the same time, Luigi replaces Mario in the one player game. There are also multi-player present in the game that feature Luigi, with mini-games that are largely recycled from "Super Mario 64 DS".
7. Who kidnaps Princess Peach at the beginning of the game?

Answer: Bowser Jr.

Since "Super Mario Sunshine", Bowser Jr. has become Bowser's right hand man. While Mario and the Princess are walking along, a mysterious cloud gathers over the Princess's castle and strikes it with a lightening bolt. Mario runs off to investigate. With Mario absent, Bowser Jr. kidnaps Princess Peach.
8. Which of the following characters does NOT appear in the Mini-Games?

Answer: Princess Peach Toadstool

Yoshi, various Toads, and Bob-Omb Buddy all appear different mini-games. There are eighteen total mini-games under four different headers. These are the available games:

Action:
Snowball Slalom
Lakitu Launch
Danger, Bob-omb! Danger!
Whack-a-Monty
Balloon Racing

Puzzle:
Wanted!
Which Wiggler?
Hide and Boo Seek
Puzzle Panel
Coincentration

Table:
Memory Match
Picture Poker
Pair-a-Gone

Variety:
Mario's Slides
Sort or 'Splode
Bounce and Trounce
Bob-omb Squad
Trampoline Time
9. What is the total amount of Star Coins present in "New Super Mario Bros."?

Answer: 240

There are eighty levels in "New Super Mario Bros." As there are three coins per level, there are two hundred forty star coins in the entire game. In "New Super Mario Bros. Wii", there are 231 Star Coins. They add four thousand points in that title, whereas in "New Super Mario Bros." they add one thousand.
10. One of the final bosses to "New Super Mario Bros." is Dry Bowser, a Skeleton Dry Bones version of Bowser. What world in "New Super Mario Bros." does Bowser transform into Dry Bowser?

Answer: World One

In World One you fight Bowser in the first castle. After you defeat him, Bowser falls into a lake of lava and his flesh is melted off. The next time you see Dry Bowser is in the first castle in World 8. Bowser Jr. is able to resurrect Bowser by putting his bones into a magic potion and using magic to bring him back (in a scene reminiscent of Lord Voldemort's return in the end of J. K. Rowling's novel "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"). Bowser grows to three times his normal size.

Dry Bowser appears as an unlockable character in "Mario Kart Wii" and an Ice Hockey Captain (along with three Dry Bones) in "Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games".
