Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is an investigative power Miles Edgeworth uses to connect thoughts, creating new thoughts and leads, ultimately in his pursuit for the truth?

Answer: Logic

As 'Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth' takes place outside of the previous courtroom setting of 'Ace Attorney' games, the investigation element is far more dominant. Unlike previous 'Ace Attorney' main characters, for example Phoenix Wright who has his Magatama (a magic amulet) to peer into peoples' souls, and Apollo Justice who can perceive peoples' lies with his bracelet, Edgeworth has no such gimmick and simply relies on his powers of Logic and Deduction to find the truth.

As Edgeworth examines objects, he sometimes makes observations about them, for example, in case 1, one piece of logic questions why the murder took place in his office, and another piece notes that the fingerprints on his secret safe were wiped. By connecting these two thoughts, Edgeworth can suggest the motive was theft, further proven by the signs of a struggle in the room.

Deduction is similar to logic, but is used to find contradictions in the crime scene. Again in case 1, there is a bullet-hole in his painting, however, only one bullet was shot from the gun found at the crime scene. Therefore, Edgeworth deduced there must have been two guns shot.

By using these techniques, Edgeworth gets ever closer to the truth he so seeks...
2. In the first case, 'Turnabout Visitor', which sports-obsessed prosecutor tried to pin his unfortunate murder of colleague Buddy Faith in Miles Edgeworth's office on eternally unlucky security officer Maggey Byrde?

Answer: Jacques Portman

Jacques Portman was a prosecutor... a corrupt prosecutor who was a member of a large smuggling ring. His goal was to obtain evidence involved in the KG-8 Incident, one which implicated a prominent member of the ring, but also the smuggling ring's leader itself.

Buddy Faith was his friend, although it is said that when they played basketball together, Jacques Portman took all the shots for himself. Because Jacques Portman swapped the identity plates on his and neighboring Edgeworth's office, Buddy Faith walked in on Portsman in the act of theft, and was killed to prevent him from telling on Portsman.

Portsman tried to shift the blame onto Gumshoe, and later onto Maggey Byrde, but Edgeworth proved both of them innocent. To finally implicate Portsman, Edgeworth caught him on his own lies when he found a blood-stained video on him.
3. In the second case, 'Turnabout Airlines', which sleepy social 'chameleon' panicked, pushing Interpol agent Akbey Hicks to his death as she feared he would discover smuggled goods in the plane's storage room?

Answer: Cammy Meele

Cammy Meele was a lazy, disorganised flight attendant whose only real job on the airplane was to translate foreign languages; mainly the fictional language of Borginian. She, too, was a member of the smuggling ring prevalent throughout the game, and there was a smuggled statue in the storage room of the plane. As Akbey Hicks planned to investigate the storage room, she knew she'd be found out if she didn't do anything, so pushed him over a railing, and the impact killed him.

She did a fairly good job in covering her tracks, as she managed to move the body away from the real crime scene and make it look as though the victim was killed with a statuette from the iFly airlines store, which would implicate colleague Rhoda Teneiro as she typically took care of the store. However, it was Cammy's oversights that lead to her being caught. She didn't realise that Akbey Hicks' phone would still transfer pictures despite having broken in his fall. And, her knowledge of Borginian led her to open a box of Borginian cloth used to wipe blood from the scene rather than one clearly entitled 'Bedsheets', which could be clearly seen in the aforementioned photo by Akbey Hicks.

Her name, Cammy Meele, sounds a bit like chameleon. This might reflect her act to pretend to sleep all the time.
4. Upon meeting Miles Edgeworth, a young, spirited girl called Kay Faraday claimed to be the Great Thief Yatagarusu, but had admitted she hadn't actually stolen anything yet. What does the Yatagarusu aim to steal?

Answer: The truth

The Yatagarusu is supposed to only steal the truth. In the past, the Yatagarusu would expose the dirty secrets of companies to the public, and had never been caught doing so. However, Kay Faraday had not been the Yatagarusu for very long, so hadn't had the chance to steal any truth. She jumped in on Edgeworth who had been locked up in case three by kidnappers, but ended up getting stuck herself.

Together, they found a way out of the room, and worked together to solve the case. Faraday had initially sought out Edgeworth as she wanted his help in locating Calisto Yew, the woman who had killed her father. Faraday had met Edgeworth as a child seven years ago, but Edgeworth didn't remember until the end of the case, which lead onto the re-telling of how they first met in case four.
5. In case three, 'The Kidnapped Turnabout', several characters of 'Ace Attorney' past make a re-appearance: a police officer, a former security lady and a forensic detective enthusiast. Which of these was not one of them?

Answer: Regina Berry

Wendy Oldbag was dressed up as a Pink Badger at the resort of Gatewater Land, and witnessed a false murder. Wendy is a huge fan of Edgeworth, but, she doesn't quite have the same appeal to Edgeworth, who groans every time he meets her. Her testimonies are usually unreliable, but, when it comes down to it, sometimes she can be really helpful as she often has knowledge nobody else has... it just needs a little coaxing out.

Ema Skye came to America to meet Edgeworth again. She was actually studying in Europe, to become a forensics detective properly. Her enthusiasm in scientific methods was largely caused because of a case in 'Ace Attorney' past when witnessing a murder and barely being able to remember the details. She wanted to prevent that from happening again, so decided to study forensic methods.

Mike Meekins was also first met in the same case as Ema Skye, and is a largely incompetent police officer. In case three, he is 'on duty' as the kids' favourite, the Blue Badger, however, he lost his gun which makes him look suspicious in the murder of Colin Devorae for a while, however he is eventually proven innocent. He is another recurring character who it seems is always very lucky to still have a job.
6. In case three, 'The Kidnapped Turnabout', rich man Ernest Amano pleaded with Miles Edgeworth to help pay off a hefty ransom on his son, Lance Amano, and bring him to safety. Who was the key person behind the ransom plot, due to their requirement to pay off a loan from a company known for its brutality?

Answer: Lance Amano

Lance Amano needed to pay off his loan to catchy yet cruel loan company Tender Lender, which originally featured in case three of 'Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations'. The kidnapping, therefore, was actually a sham. He knew his father, Ernest Amano, was very rich and would bail him out, which he did.

He enlisted the help of his girlfriend, Lauren Paups, who was infatuated with him, and Colin Devorae, who he knew was an escaped criminal and was blackmailing him. What went wrong was that Colin Devorae attacked him, and he had to shoot him dead. Whilst he tried to pin the blame on Lauren Paups, with the fake murder Oldbag saw, Edgeworth found the real location of murder was at the Haunted House, and used Kay Faraday's simulator machine Little Thief to prove it.

When Ernest Amano found out about the hoax kidnapping, he wasn't very bothered. Quite probably because his son was following in his devious footsteps, as he was involved in the smuggling ring, and the money Lance tried to heist was most likely counterfeit. Ernest tried to tamper with the evidence to protect his son, but failed, and both went down for their misdeeds.
7. In case four, 'Turnabout Reminiscence', devious defense lawyer Calisto Yew killed both prosecutor Byrne Faraday and hitman Mack Rell, setting the scene up so that it looked like they had attacked each other at the same time. Which of these items, given to Yew by Faraday, did she use to instantly and permanently silence him?

Answer: Yatagarasu's Key

What very few people knew was that Yatagarusu's Key also had a secret flip function as a knife. In reality, this knife was also a key, but of course, it could also be used as a weapon. Unwittingly, Byrne Faraday gave Calisto Yew the item which would then kill him. She claimed that, as she knew him well, she killed him quickly out of kindness. A truly generous person indeed.

Afterwards, Yew had hitman Mack Rell set up a video which would sound a gunshot in half an hour, and shot him after he did so, placing their bodies on top of each other to make it look like they died in a crossfire. She would open the window and, in the nearby court lobby, would spill her strong perfume, causing detective Tyrell Badd to open the window and thus hear the false gunshot. This would also give her an alibi as she would not be in the place of murder. However, although it took him a while, Edgeworth worked out the video's function, the perfume's role, and that Yew was the only one who could have known the key's true function. However, when cornered by Edgeworth and co., she drew a gun, fired (luckily, she missed) and managed to escape the scene...

The flip function was needed to open Manny Coachen's safe in case five; as the key segment would only open the first part of the safe. The knife was required to open the hidden section, which contained more interesting things. It was this reason why Yew desperately needed this key back; as she was invested in keeping the smuggling ring safe.
8. In case five, 'Turnabout Ablaze', which of these weapons was NOT used to injure someone else, but for a rather more creative purpose?

Answer: Crossbow

Smuggling leader Quercus Alba used the crossbow with, ingeniously, two sticks that his passionflowers wrapped around, to shoot to the Babahlese embassy wires that would be used as a rotary pulley. The plan was to swap his real Primidux Statue with the fake one, in order to retrieve counterfeiting plates hidden in the fake statue.

The Primidux Statue and Ornamental Knife were used by Quercus Alba in both of his murders, and the Yatagarusu's Key was used to cause Alba's wound.
9. In case five, 'Turnabout Ablaze', which highly unlikely location was the real location for the murder of Babahlese secretary Manny Coachen, who died for his plot to take over the smuggling ring involved in every case of the game?

Answer: Theatrum Neutralis

Before the day of Manny Coachen's murder, Alba had discovered Coachen's plans to depose him as Ambassador of Allebahst, and thus weaken his legal impregnability and strength as leader of the smuggling ring. He set into motion a highly complex plan with the help of Interpol Agent Shih-na... or Calisto Yew, another member of the smuggling ring. Alba killed Coachen in the Theatrum Neutralis backstage room with an ornamental knife disguised in a bouquet of flowers and then had his body ferried in a pushcart by an unwitting Larry Butz to Allehbast's rose garden to dump in the pool there.

Meanwhile, Shih-na set up a fire on Babahl's side to use up the water in the pool on that side. Because both sides were connected through bilateral symmetry, the body would float down whilst Babahl's water was being used up. Shih-na would then retrieve the body and float back up as Alba refilled the pools. She then placed the body in his own office and made the Primidux Statue swap with Alba, and then tried to implicate Kay Faraday as Coachen's murderer in order to steal her Little Thief device, but ultimately failed.

Their ultimate aim was not only to depose Manny Coachen, but also to implicate him as the smuggling ring's leader, throwing them off the scent of the real culprit, Quercus Alba. Alba was careful to destroy any evidence that would implicate him, and was a highly slippery character who only gave testimony when he absolutely had to.

The name 'Quercus' is the genus of Oak trees, and this name also links with Calisto Yew, as Yew is a poisonous tree. It is unclear how close they were, as, although Yew did many deeds for Alba, she allowed Kay Faraday to keep the 'hair sticks' (or crossbow bolts) that would eventually give an extra clue as to Alba's guilt.
10. Throughout the game, many people claimed to be the Great Thief Yatagarusu. Murdered prosecutor Byrne Faraday and his daughter, Kay Faraday, detective Tyrell Badd, and dark-hearted Calisto Yew all claimed to be the Yatagarasu within the story. How many of them were the real Yatagarusu?

Answer: All four of them

The Yatagarusu story is one which dominates much of the game. In reality, all of them were the Yatagarusu, despite the initial assumption proposed by the game that only one person was.

The Yatagarusu was formed by Calisto Yew, Byrne Faraday and Tyrell Badd, as Manny Coachen was falsely acquitted for the murder of Cece Yew due to the smuggling group stealing conclusive evidence against him (the video). Calisto Yew pretended to be her sister and was said to utter a howl when his acquittal was given. They plotted together to find a way to fight those who were above the law. Yew would determine the locations of their heists, Faraday would carry them out, and Badd would remove any evidence that would give them trouble.

However, as Shih-na (or Yew) eventually said, 'I was destined to betray everyone from the very beginning'. Yew's real role was to keep an eye on Faraday and Badd and stop them if they ever got too close to discovering the real truth about the smuggling ring. Indeed, it was Faraday who found the Yatagarusu's Key, and it was for this reason he had to die.

Kay Faraday then took over the legacy of the Yatagarusu, believing her father was the real deal. He was, but so were Yew and Badd. So, all four of them were the Yatagarusu, although, in Yew's case, she didn't really uphold its morals.
