Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Imagine taking a turtle, shaping it to stand like a human and then animating it. Voila! We have ourselves a popular monster from the "Super Mario" game series. For variants, recolour the shells. Which very common enemy have I described here?

Answer: Koopa

Koopas first appeared in "Super Mario Bros", all the way back in 1985. They have been a common foe in the Mario franchise ever since, appearing in over fifty games! These turtle-men sport a chic, shiny shell, generally green or red. In platforming games like "Super Mario Bros", their shell can often be used as a weapon, but be careful, it's a double-edged sword - if bounced off a wall, well, it can bounce right back at you. Which hurts, apparently.
2. In "Final Fantasy IV" (1991), a character, whose name is a homophone of a Biblical villain, was mentally corrupted by the antagonist, Zeromus, because of his lack of mental fortitude. What was this troubled dragoon's name?

Answer: Kain

"Final Fantasy IV" was a role-playing game originally released for the SNES system in 1991, and skilfully wove dialogue and plot with turn-based battles and an impressive musical score.
The plot of "Final Fantasy IV" mainly involved Cecil, a dark knight who went to the light side, and his epic quest with friends to save the world from Zeromus, a spirit sealed on the Moon.

In battle, Kain's special ability was to jump, avoiding damage for the jump period, and leap down to deal a strong blow to the enemy. Because he was jealous of Cecil for having Rosa's love, he allowed his mind to be enslaved by the enemy, but he eventually turned 'good' in the end. In the Bible, Cain was the first murderer, killing his brother, Abel, due to jealousy. It can be said that Kain was jealous of Cecil, so a parallel may be drawn.
3. In which game, originally released in 2002 for the PS2 and re-using many Disney-themed locations, did young blue-eyed protagonist Sora get thrust into a quest to save the world from the wicked Heartless, whilst looking for lost childhood friends Kairi and Riku?

Answer: Kingdom Hearts

"Kingdom Hearts" was an action-adventure role-playing game with a generally linear layout. The protagonist was Sora, a young boy who learned how to use the Keyblade, which was a sword which looked like a giant key. In battle, sharp-tongued Donald Duck and laid-back Goofy (both from Disney creations) assisted in battle, along with special guests in each of the worlds Sora visited.

Because Disney and Square Enix collaborated to create "Kingdom Hearts", many Disney and "Final Fantasy" themes were recycled for use in this game. Disney provided memorable locations and story elements, whereas Square Enix provided more combat skills and battle abilities from "Final Fantasy" games. Despite some repeat themes, the antagonist and main characters were newly created for the story, and the weaving of old themes with new was well executed.
4. Kremlin, Kaboom, Kackle, Klobber, Klomp, Koco, Knocka... I think I see a pattern here! In which popular primate platformer video game series, which also has a 'K' word in its title, do all these enemies feature?

Answer: Donkey Kong Country

The "Donkey Kong Country" series primarily featured Donkey Kong, a gorilla, and his sidekick Diddy Kong, a chimp. Other friends like cute Dixie Kong, 'not-so-little' Kiddy Kong, surfing Funky Kong and old Cranky Kong also made repeat appearances throughout the series, and in Dixie and Kiddy's case, even frontlined one or more of the games.

Donkey Kong's primary enemy was King K.Rool (or similar versions of this title). He was a green crocodile-like man who bothered Donkey Kong and his friends on numerous occasions. To reach King K.Rool in the platform games, players would typically have to go through sequences of platform-based levels, which often required some dexterity and timing to surpass. Despite always losing in the end, K.Rool would eventually return for more beatings in future sequels.
5. In "Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth" (DS, 2009-10), which lively and energetic 'thief' acted as prosecutor Edgeworth's assistant, generally only providing useful help at the most unexpected times?

Answer: Kay Faraday

Miles Edgeworth was a prosecutor who originally starred in the "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" games for Nintendo DS. He was initially cold and would only aim for a perfect prosecution even if he knew the defendant was innocent. However, over time, he softened and realised that the truth mattered more than the verdict. In this spin off game, he would examine murder scenes and use logic and deduction to determine how things really happened.

Kay Faraday first met Miles Edgeworth when he was kidnapped, and she helped him to escape. She sought his aid to put to rest an old demon in her closet... indeed, this was a demon in Miles Edgeworth's closet as well, although he had forgotten about it for a while (trying not to spoil anything, here!). Kay generally didn't help Miles much practically, although she provided amusing comments to offset Miles's dry nature. However, at times, she would come up with a useful insight or key evidence at the right time, helping Miles to solve the case.
6. "Breath of Fire II" (SNES, 1994) featured a motley crew. In fact, none of the main characters were entirely human, however they bonded for the common cause. Which fighter with a large tail was originally met in a coliseum, saved from a poison dart by protagonist Ryu?

Answer: Katt

"Breath of Fire II" was the second in the fiery series featuring dragon-boy Ryu, who is consistent to every series, despite each story being almost entirely stand-alone in its own right.

Katt was first met in a coliseum, where she was a skilled fighter. However, the coliseum owner decided to rig the next fight so that she would lose - by poisoning her, so he could cash in! Ryu, her opponent for that fight, couldn't convince her of the plot, but saved her with an antidote, which made her join his journey for the rest of the game. In battle, she used a fighting stick and had high damage, but low endurance.
7. In a tale of two almost identical worlds, which energetic 'radical dreamer', who was a clone projected into the future, was the main female protagonist of "Chrono Cross"?

Answer: Kid

"Chrono Cross" (1999-2000, PSX) was a role-playing game had quite a complex plot which made many references to its timely predecessor, "Chrono Trigger". Kid was an energetic thief who often used crude language to humorous effect. There were two identical 'worlds', one which was split from the other when Kid travelled through time and saved a key character from dying.

The main character, Serge, could travel between the worlds, and had to do so on numerous occasions. Kid eventually met and helped Serge again when soldiers tried to kill him, and accompanied him for much of the game.
8. In "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island", which Magikoopa, who often augmented creatures' powers with his magic, tried but eventually failed to capture baby Mario and Luigi after sensing they would cause boss Bowser problems in the future?

Answer: Kamek

"Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" was originally released for the SNES in 1995 and frontlined Mario's cute dinosaur companion, Yoshi (or, Yoshis is more accurate), as the main protagonist. Kamek saw that Mario and Luigi would cause Bowser many problems in the future, so tried to capture them. He succeeded with Luigi, but Mario was dropped into a baby Yoshi village, who then protected him as they went to free Luigi from baby Bowser.

The game featured 6 worlds with different types of platforming adventures to complete: Yoshi had to protect baby Mario from Kamek and his minions. Using their abilities to hover, to pick up eggs and shoot them, and to swallow some enemies, the Yoshis forged ahead, ultimately saving Luigi although Kamek would escape with Baby Bowser.
9. Now, to bring some cuteness to proceedings, which loveable pink ball, protagonist of many games which share his name, can float, spit out enemies and sometimes even eat his enemies to gain their special abilities?

Answer: Kirby

Kirby has starred in many of his own games, but has also guest-starred in critically acclaimed multiplayer fighting game "Super Smash Bros". His first appearance was in "Kirby's Dream Land" in 1992, for Nintendo's Game Boy. Although his ability to eat and copy enemy abilities for his own, for example eating a fire monster and being able to breath fireballs, did not appear in the first outing, it was a popular feature of many later games. Kirby typically doesn't say a lot, and Kirby focused games are often intended to be for beginners.

The bright, colourful environment and easy to pick up controls have made Kirby games popular across its series.
10. Which of these mean kings, who shared his name with a British king of the past, was a minor antagonist in "Illusion of Gaia", and went as far as to hire a heartless hitman to kill and retrieve a treasure from the main character, Will?

Answer: King Edward

"Illusion of Gaia" was a classic game released in 1995 (Europe) for the SNES gaming system. Famous sites from the real world, such as the Pyramid of Giza and the Great Wall of China feature in the game, and the game integrated several moral questions and actions within its impressive story.

King Edward lived in Edward Castle, along with his wife, Queen Edwina. Early in the game, he wanted the Crystal Ring, a timeless relic of the past which had belonged to Will's father, Olman. When Will went to the castle and would not give him the ring (he actually didn't know of its whereabouts at the time), Edward sent him to the dungeon, although Will escaped with the help of Kara's pig, Hamlet. Later in the game, Edward is referenced as having hired Jackal, an assassin, to murder Will and take back Princess Kara, who left the castle to go with Will and escape her "prison of silk and gold" as she put it.
