After the Xel'Naga artifact absorbed the Queen of Blades portion of her, Sarah Kerrigan became human again. This left the zerg without a queen, and they became a broken race. In the meantime, Jim Rayor and Valerian Mengsk took Sarah to a laboratory to see if she was truly human again.

She retained the psionic powers she had as a ghost and as the Queen of Blades, but was found to still be able to control zerg. For all that has happened to her, her top priority seems to be revenge against Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, who set the events in motion that caused all this.

Dominion forces, led by Nova, end up raiding the holding laboratory and tearing it apart. Sarah and Jim leave together, managing to ride a shuttle out of the bay. During the escape, Sarah and Jim became cut off, and Sarah managed to escape in Jim's personal shuttle after defeating an Archangel.

While the others at the facility retreated, she took off by herself to go back and find Jim. Sarah returned to the planet and took hold of a zerg hive cluster to destroy some Dominion defenses that had been set up as a trap.

Although victorious, she intercepted a message from Emperor Mengsk, who announced to the world that Jim had been captured and executed.

Sarah returned to zerg space and met Izsha, her former advisor, as well as Abathur, who directs the evolution of the zerg. Abathur was the one who originally created the 'Queen of Blades' design and considers Sarah Kerrigan and the Queen of Blades to be two completely different entities.

He evolves the swarm throughout the game, making basic units more powerful. Sarah's first step in reassembling the swarm is to return to Char and races against Zagara to collect an army's worth of baneling eggs. Although Sarah intends to kill her, Zagara pleads her case and is allowed to live.

When Sarah consults with Izsha, she is told that broodmother Nafash is attempting to create her own brood on the ice planet of Kaldir. Sarah visits the planet to reclaim the swarm, and finds that Nafash has been killed by protoss forces. The swarm adapts to withstand the freezing cold, and they go through flash freezes to destroy the protoss on Kaldir so they cannot send backup forces to destroy them.

Despite destroying numerous shuttles attempting to get backup help, one of the shuttles escapes. Sarah infects a captured protoss -- Lasarra -- and used her to get into the final shuttle.

In "Alien vs Predator" style, the zerg are able to take over the final shuttle and destroy it.

Answer: Gorgons

One of Sarah's top priorities is to reclaim the planet Char, her home planet when she was the Queen of Blades. She takes the swarm to Char and goes through the Bone Trench to get to Horace Warfield, general of the terran forces. General Warfield attempts to send Gorgons (extremely large battlecruisers) after her, but they are destroyed with the activation of scourge nests.

He then tries to push back the zerg with nukes, but fails. Sarah confronts and kills General Warfield, and with his death, terran forces abandon Char.

The dark templar Zeratul got ahold of Kerrigan and told her to visit Zerus. Zerus was the original homeworld of the zerg and located near the center of the galaxy. After defeating some of the primal zerg and awakening the ancient Zurvan, he leads her to the very first spawning pool.

Her forces fend off primal zerg until she absorbs its power and becomes even stronger than before. Zurvan also told her of Amon and how he corrupted the zerg. He bound them to the will of a single entity -- the Overmind, who was succeeded by the Queen of Blades.

After she was cleansed of the Queen of Blades persona, she was freed from Amon's corruption.

After Kerrigan gained the power of the primal zerg and became even more powerful than she once was, she was advised by Zurvan, the ancient one, that only a few broods of primal zerg refused her. She went out and killed Yagdra, Kraith, and Silvan, absorbing their essences each time. Zurvan, following the nature of the primal zerg ("no allegiance but to self, kill or be killed"), challenges Kerrigan.

She kills him as well. Having absorbed all the power of Zeras and adding the primal zerg to her broods, she returns to Terran space to get revenge on Emperor Mengsk.

Soon after Kerrigan gains the power of Zerus, Emperor Mengsk contacts her, informing her that Jim is indeed alive. Unable to sense him, she turns to Matt Horner and Valerian to figure out where he is being held. After a bit of a fiasco and a confrontation with his former wife Mira, Matt managed to find out where Jim was being held. Kerrigan used a leviathan to overwhelm the ship and free Jim, who was shocked to see what had become of her. Though she gave him the chance, he refused to kill her. She went on, going out to destroy a hybrid laboratory with the help of Alexei Stukov.

With the help of Alexei Stukov, Kerrigan used infestors to corrupt and destroy one of the most-guarded spaces in all of terran territory. She pushes through the lab, killing a number of hybrids in the process. As she reaches the deepest layers of the lab, she fends off the Tal'darim protoss and confronts Narud directly.

She is shocked when he transforms into Jim and then her former self, and Narud nearly kills her. However, she is ultimately able to kill him. Having destroyed the hybrid facility, she returns to Korhal for her final confrontation, with Emperor Mengsk.

Answer: the Xel'Naga artifact

After finishing all else, Kerrigan set her sights on Korhal, the homeworld of Emperor Mengsk. With aid of the primal zerg, she was able to take down Korhal's protective Psi Destroyer. She and her generals push to the heart of the Dominion, they take down the Night Wolves, the Alpha Squadron, and even the Odin, ending the campaign and leading to the conclusion of the game.

When Kerrigan comes face-to-face with Emperor Mengsk, he calmly confronts her with the Xel'Naga artifact that disappeared in the aftermath of the previous game. It is only with the intervention of Jim that the artifact is disabled, and Kerrigan has her revenge. She annihilates Emperor Mengsk with a burst of psionic energy, stating "You made us all into monsters."
