Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pokemon #056 in the Kanto Pokedex is a fighting-type creature defined in later games as a 'Pig Monkey Pokemon'. What Pokemon, exclusive to "Pokemon Red", is it?

Answer: Mankey

Mankey, a Fighting-type Pokemon, evolves into another 'Pig Monkey Pokemon' at level 28-- Primeape. Found in "Pokemon Red" and "Yellow", the Pokemon is typically temperamental, at least according to later Pokedexes. Weak to Flying and Psychic types, Mankey only learns a couple of Fighting-type techniques, opting to hit with Normal-type martial arts moves for the remainder of the time (eg. Karate Chop). Primeape, even angrier than Mankey, learns Rage, but only in "Yellow", at level 28.
2. A 'Classy Cat Pokemon', Kanto Pokedex #053 is which of the following creatures which learns Fury Swipes and Slash?

Answer: Persian

Persian evolves from Meowth at level 28, transforming from a kitten-like Pokemon a la Maneki Neko into a more regal creature. Both Meowth and Persian can be caught in "Pokemon Blue" only-- they're not in the wild in "Red" or "Yellow". Persian is particularly well-known for being a go-to Pokemon for gym leader Giovanni. Meowth, a 'Scratch Cat Pokemon', makes use of a unique technique, Pay Day, which, when used, drops money on the ground which can be picked up by the winner after battle.
3. When this Pokemon, Kanto Pokedex #081, evolves, it attracts itself to others of the same type to form a larger creature. What is the name of this unevolved 'Magnet Pokemon'?

Answer: Magnemite

Magnemite is one of the more perplexing original Pokemon, mainly because he's a living form of an otherwise inanimate object. Literally a bunch of screws, hunks of metal, and two magnets, Magnemite is more robotic than anything and can only be caught in an optional game locale, the Power Plant.

At level 30 he evolves into Magneton and, in later games ("Diamond" and "Pearl" being the earliest) Magneton can become Magnezone. Magnemite is a primarily Electric-type Pokemon with mostly Normal techniques; in later games he also takes on the Steel type.
4. Part Grass-type, part Psychic-Type, what 'Egg Pokemon' at #102 in the Kanto Pokedex evolves with a Leaf Stone?

Answer: Exeggcute

Although most of these Pokemon involve eggs in some way, shape, or form, only Exeggcute is nothing more than half a dozen eggs. Weirdly, without legs these creatures are able to jump around and perform Grass-type techniques (as well as Hypnosis) to battle foes. If you use a Leaf Stone on it at any time you will evolve it into Exeggutor, also known in your Pokedex as the 'Coconut Pokemon'. Don't ask.
5. What 'Fish Pokemon', #129 in the Kanto Pokedex, only uses the ineffective technique Splash until level 15?

Answer: Magikarp

Commonly regarded by players as one of the weakest Pokemon in the game, Magikarp only learns two attacks before evolving into the obviously-more-powerful 'Atrocious Pokemon', Gyarados, at level 20. The humble Magikarp can be caught with any Old Rod in any old body of water. Until level 15 he can only Splash opponents; you may quickly discover that the movie is utterly ineffective at doing anything. Thankfully, by the time he's level 15, he learns Tackle-- his only other technique.

In later games he learns Flail as well, albeit at a much higher level than necessary.
6. What 'Tiny Turtle Pokemon' evolves into Wartortle and, eventually, Blastoise?

Answer: Squirtle

One of the three starter Pokemon in "Red" and "Blue", Squirtle is a basic Water-type; he's strong against a Charmander but weak against a Bulbasaur. He evolves into Wartortle at level 16, retaining his turtle-like appearance as he grows. In "Pokemon Yellow" you can get a Squirtle from a police officer in Vermilion City but if you don't start with him in "Red" and "Blue" you'll have to trade him into your game.

Although he has the typical Tackle and Bite (and the like) he also takes Bubble, Water Gun, and Hydro Pump later on.
7. A fully-evolved Pokemon (and #012 in the Kanto Pokedex), what 'Butterfly Pokemon' can learn Sleep Powder, Poisonpowder, and Stun Spore?

Answer: Butterfree

Butterfree comes into existence at a meager level 10 when a Caterpie evolves into Metapod (at level 7) and Metapod evolves onward. Butterfree is a wonderful early Pokemon which can be leveled into as soon as Viridian Forest and, in fact, may be of particular use during the Pewter City Gym.

Although most of Butterfree's techniques will be Grass-type, one can also learn Confusion and Psychic, making it a useful Bug-type to toss into battle for status effects and psychic damage alike.
8. Pokemon #078 in Kanto's Pokedex, what 'Fire Horse Pokemon' is evolved into at level 40?

Answer: Rapidash

Rapidash is the only evolution of Ponyta, an earlier 'Fire Horse Pokemon' found on Cinnabar Island, specifically in the burning Pokemon Mansion. At level 40, however, Ponyta evolves into Rapidash, a Pokemon known for being one of the fastest in the land. Both Pokemon are adept with Fire-type attacks including Ember and Fire Spin.

In addition, Rapidash's speed allows it to make good use of Agility and Take Down.
9. Very clearly a 'Duck Pokemon', what Water-type (though, arguably, also a Psychic-type) is #054 in the Kanto Pokedex, evolving at level 33?

Answer: Psyduck

Psyduck, often portrayed as troubled and confused in the "Pokemon" TV show, can be put to good use against both Fire-types and Ghost-types considering its proficiency with Water and Psychic techniques. Although Psyduck learns Water staple Hydro Pump at a late level, he also learns Confusion at level 36; you're unlikely to find a very low-leveled Psyduck in the wild anyways.

At level 33 Psyduck becomes Golduck, a larger, more agile Pokemon.
10. At #060 in your Kanto Pokedex, what tiny 'Tadpole Pokemon' with a spiral on its stomach will evolve twice in its life cycle?

Answer: Poliwag

Poliwag is a small Water-type Pokemon who uses Bubble, Water Gun, and Hydro Pump, but, due to the spiral on its stomach, is also effective with Hypnosis. You can catch Poliwags in the wild by using Good Rods or Super Rods. Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl at level 25 and into Poliwrath after that, at any point, using a Water Stone.

In other games in the series (starting with "Pokemon Gold" and "Silver"), Poliwhirl can evolve into Politoed, a green 'Frog Pokemon', if you trade it with a King's Rock.
