Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arguably one of the world's most popular PC game series is this one, set in the fantasy world of Azeroth where players can do battle against huge monsters and delight their inner role-player. Which series is this?

Answer: World of Warcraft

'World of Warcraft' is classified as a MMORPG, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players are able choose a faction, a race and a class when creating their characters, before they are let out into the world of Azeroth where adventure awaits. With its array of expansions adding new continents and a wealth of new content, 'World of Warcraft' has long reigned over PC gaming thanks to its millions of devoted fans.
2. Before it made the jump to mobile devices and the Xbox Live Arcade, which indie sandbox title for PC, noted for its simplistic 'voxel'-based graphics, presented players with one task: to survive and explore a near-infinite world making use of its natural resources?

Answer: Minecraft

'Minecraft' was the creation of Markus Persson, better known on the internet as Notch, a Swedish game developer who took inspiration from games like 'Infiniminer' to create an immensely popular sandbox game in which players are placed into a procedurally-generated world in which they must simply survive.

At night time, strange monsters wander the surface, and players must build shelters and construct torches and weapons to fend off these creatures and the night itself until dawn comes and they can go out and look for more materials. 'Minecraft' was originally released to the public in an alpha stage in 2009, with frequent updates adding more and more features, until it was finally properly released in late 2011.
3. Described as a 'life simulator' is which popular PC series developed by Maxis, which has since spread to consoles in recent years, in which players control the lives of individuals?

Answer: The Sims

'The Sims', so named because of its ability to simulate life, first hit PCs in 2000, allowing players to create their Sims and place them into a house and monitor their lives, tending to their needs as required. As time progresses, other neighbourhood Sims enter their lives, and the player's actions decided how their Sims interacted with others. 2004 saw a sequel, 'The Sims 2', which well and truly surpassed its predecessor in terms of popularity.
4. Which strategy game for PCs, first released in 1998, was set in outer space and featured the Zerg, the Terrans and the Protoss as they waged war against one another for control of the Koprulu Sector of the Milky Way?

Answer: StarCraft

Blizzard Entertainment, known for their 'Warcraft' series, were responsible for 'StarCraft', a game which didn't see a proper sequel until 2010. This real-time strategy title was notable for revitalising the genre, leading the way for a wave of similar games hoping to capitalise on 'StarCraft's successes. Properly managing resources and the creation of units and defences is the key to succeeding in 'StarCraft'.

Its popularity is so widespread that there have been event in which the world's best players have battled it out to see who can topple the competition and become the best 'StarCraft' player.
5. Sticking with the strategy theme, which series, initially developed by Ensemble Studios, has players controlling a civilisation from history, and progressing through various 'ages', whilst defending their settlements and attacking hostile civilisations?

Answer: Age of Empires

In the very first 'Age of Empires' game, which was first released in 1997, players could choose between playing through the game's campaign mode or the 'random map' mode, in which three civilisations (one of which is controlled by the player) are placed on a map and must expand and grow until either one civilisation dominates the other two or construction is completed on a huge structure called a Wonder. Players can command villagers to harvest materials, construct buildings to train new units like infantry and siege weapons, or fight enemies, though the latter is probably best left to the units that are best suited to battle.
6. Valve certainly knows how to make a fun game, and they definitely hit the money with this cartoony first-person multiplayer shooter, whose popularity on the PC platform Steam is second to none. Which game is this, which went 'free to play' in 2011?

Answer: Team Fortress 2

At the heart of 'Team Fortress 2' is a bitter war between two organisations, RED (Reliable Excavation and Demolition) and BLU (Builders League United), who fight each other in a series of different scenarios, be it gathering intelligence or guiding a payload of explosives to the other team's base.

The game features 9 playable classes, each with their own weapons and abilities. Where 'Team Fortress 2' really shines is its humour. The array of crazy weapons and hats, as well as the slightly maniacal Announcer, makes this game immense fun to play with or without friends.
7. No series of fantasy RPGs has been able to come close to the popularity of this series, which started on PCs before moving onto consoles as well, with such entries as 'Morrowind', 'Oblivion' and 'Skyrim'. Which series is this?

Answer: The Elder Scrolls

'The Elder Scrolls' began life in 1994 with 'Arena', before quickly gaining popularity with 'The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall' in 1996 and 'The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind' in 2002. From there, its popularity skyrocketed with 'The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion' in 2006 and 'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' in 2011 achieving wide acclaim. Each game is played from the first-person perspective, as players explore a region of the continent of Tamriel, wielding weapons and using magic to defend themselves against foes whilst exploring the land and completing tasks.
8. Ever wanted to run your own theme park? Well, thanks to this series, you can do just that. Which PC series allows players to build and manage their very own theme park?

Answer: Rollercoaster Tycoon

First released in 1999, 'Rollercoaster Tycoon' gives players a range of tasks to complete within their theme park, be they creating rides that will amuse customers to making sure there are enough food stalls to satisfy the hungry theme park goers. By catering to the customers' needs, the theme park attracts more customers and therefore more money.

In 2002, 'Rollercoaster Tycoon 2' was released, and 2004 saw 'Rollercoaster Tycoon 3'.
9. First-person shooter aficionados will be all too familiar with this series of video games, in which two teams of soldiers, the terrorists and the counter-terrorists, engage in gunplay in a range of maps. Which series is this?

Answer: Counter-Strike

'Counter-Strike' was originally a 1999 modification to the Valve game 'Half-Life', before Valve bought the rights to it and turned into a proper series. It was released in 2000 to the public. After this, Valve went about updating the mod and came back with 'Counter-Strike: Source' in 2004, thanks to improvements in the company's game engine technology.

Despite its age, 'Counter-Strike' is still as popular as it ever was.
10. Created by ex-Blizzard Entertainment employees, ArenaNet strove to offer a unique and fresh alternative to many MMORPGs on the market. Adopting a subscription-free model was which PC series, with such entries as 'Prophecies', 'Factions' and 'Nightfall'?

Answer: Guild Wars

Unlike its biggest competitor, 'World of Warcraft', the 'Guild Wars' series drew players in with its subscription-free model. All that was required to play was to simply purchase the game. After that, it was completely free to play, with updates coming at no additional cost.

This approach to the genre paid off, with 'Prophecies' (2005), 'Factions' (2006) and 'Nightfall' (2006) adding new continents to the series and wealth of new content. The series received its final expansion in 2007, 'Eye of the North', before development started on a successor to the series, which became 'Guild Wars 2' in 2012.
