Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game was released in 2003 and originally set on the planet Calypso, although a few other planets have since been added. This game bills itself as the only massive multiplayer online role playing game with a real cash economy and has set successive world records for largest ever in-game purchases. What is it called?

Answer: Entropia Universe

Although the game is nominally free to play, most of the more interesting activities available require the purchase of various items. Entropia Universe uses an in-game currency called Project Entropia Dollars (PED), which can be purchased with real money and cashed out with a fixed exchange rate of 10 PED to US$1.

This contrasts with most other games that allow purchases of in-game currency but do not authorize players to redeem currency or items for real money (although many players may do this privately and unofficially). Players who do not wish to spend their own money have several ways of earning in-game currency, mainly through menial and low-paying tasks such as collecting animal sweat and gathering fruit and dung (!), which can be sold for small amounts of PED. Players may also socialize with each other at no cost.

However, most players prefer more adventurous activities such as mining and hunting, which require equipment, which can be crafted, purchased, or traded. Success in these activities can yield random amounts of loot that can be resold for PED. Players may also offer in-game professional services to other players such as healing, guiding people around, and organizing events, for which they may receive payment.

In 2004, the game developers concluded the sale by auction of a virtual island for 265,000 PED, which at the time was the highest ever price paid for a virtual item. The winning bidder recouped the value of his investment in under a year by selling virtual homes as well as taxing other gamers to hunt or mine on the island. This record sale was soon surpassed by the sale of even more valuable items including a virtual "asteroid space resort" (which became Club Neverdie) in 2005 for 1 million PED, which the owner sold in parcels in 2010 for a total of over 6 million PED - over $600 thousand dollars in real money!
2. This game, set in the fantasy world of Tyria, claims to be unique in that player actions affect the ongoing storyline. What is it its name?

Answer: Guild Wars 2

The premise of the game is that five Elder Dragons sleeping underground have awakened and seized control of Tyria. Players begin the game by creating a character with a customized biography that is intended to provide a personal story that guides the character's path through the game.

The personal story guides the character through a series of instanced chapters in which their life and adventures are explored. Players choose from five main races and eight professions to build their character. The character's race determines which of five cities in Tyria they start from.

In the core story, characters ally with one of several major organizations dedicated to fighting the Elder Dragons. The game's website explains that instead of "a traditional questing system," unique dynamic events occur in each area that respond to the player's actions, the outcomes of which have a ripple effect on the environment.
3. In this game, Satan has disappeared and is presumed dead. Players vie to become president of Hell in its first-ever election. What is this game?

Answer: DemonsAreCrazy

The game offers several play styles, including first-person or third-person shooter, hack-and-slash for up close and personal combat, and massive multiplayer online perspectives that provide an overview of a battle arena. Players begin by choosing one of eighteen starter demons that matches their play style, then customize skills and craft magical items. Players may seek to form or join political parties, go on quests and hunts, participate in auctions and guilds, and explore a highly detailed vision of Hell.
4. This space-based game is set 21 thousand years in the future in a galaxy called New Eden and primarily involves piloting starships. What is it known as?

Answer: Eve Online

The premise of "Eve Online" is that humanity discovered a naturally occurring wormhole to an uninhabited galaxy that was called New "Eden." After setting up dozens of colonies there, the wormhole unexpectedly collapsed, isolating the colonists and causing many colonies to collapse and die out. Over subsequent millennia, the survivors' descendants developed five distinct civilizations capable of interstellar travel. Gameplay revolves around piloting customizable ships through an online environment consisting of more than 5000 star systems. Ships range in size from small frigates a a few dozen meters in length to gigantic capital ships up to 17 kilometers long. Available activities include mining, piracy, manufacturing, trading, exploration, and combat.

Interstellar travel is facilitated by gates between star systems. Eve Online is noted for its size and complexity and is arguably the largest online science fiction game in the world. In 2014, a massive battle in a single star system that has become known as "the Bloodbath of B-R5RB" lasted 21 hours and involved thousands of players.
5. In this building game, players build a home base called a cornerstone that they can take with them to various in-game worlds. Players can craft new weapons, creatures, and environments. Which one of the following is it?

Answer: Trove

This voxel-based sandbox game allows players to choose from fourteen upgradeable character classes, with the option of switching between classes at any time. Gameplay begins in a central "Hub" from which players can access various worlds via portals. Players can use construction skills to solve dungeons, such as by building stairways.

There are also customizable Club Worlds that players can share with their friends. Players can defeat hostile non-player characters to obtain certain kinds of loot.

They can also obtain various in-game items by crafting, trading with other players, buying them from an in-game store, and by reaching various levels of mastery. Players can stock a special "Collection" of unlocked items that allows them to equip any character on their account with items from the Collection without restriction.
6. "The Lord of the Rings Online", like many other massive multiplayer online role playing games, allows players to create characters with a variety of quantifiable attributes or "stats." Instead of "health" or "hit points," what stat is used in this game to represent how much damage a character can take before being defeated in combat?

Answer: Morale

An unusual feature of this game compared to more traditional role-playing games is that characters are never killed, only defeated. Morale represents the amount of pain the character can suffer before being defeated. When a character's morale reaches zero, they are defeated and can no longer use any of their skills, although they may still communicate with other players.

Other players may attempt to revive a defeated character and sometimes a player may attempt to do so themselves. If the character is not revived in place in ten minutes, they are transported to a nearby Rally Point and are revived there. "The Lord of the Rings Online" allows various kinds of gameplay.

For example, in the Epic Story, players can shift temporarily from playing a character of their own design to playing a legendary character such as Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf, and others, as they take part in events from the novel on which the game is based. To travel through the lands of Middle Earth featured in the game, players can choose from travelling by conventional means, that is, on foot or mounts, or teleporting instantly to key locations via "stable-masters" and certain "quick travel" skills.
7. "Neverwinter" is set in a city of the same name in the "Forgotten Realms," a fictional world derived from a campaign setting from which well-known table-top role playing game?

Answer: Dungeons & Dragons

"Forgotten Realms" is one of the most popular fantasy settings in "Dungeons & Dragons", and has been the subject of novels, video game adaptations, and comic books, as well as game playing accessories. It contains a highly detailed fantasy world set on an earth-like planet on which humans co-exist with various humanoid races, such as elves, dwarves, and so on, and has a highly developed cosmology.

The plot of "Neverwinter" follows on from events in the novel "Gauntlgrym" by R. A. Salvatore and is set in the titular city, which is under attack by undead creatures, while factions of the living with the city also struggle for power. Players can create characters from a choice of eight different classes based on those used in the table-top version of Dungeons & Dragons.

Although the story is set in the city of Neverwinter, players have the option of seeking adventure in a wide variety of locations based in the Forgotten Realms.
8. "Star Wars: The Old Republic" allows players to choose from eight character classes divided between the two factions of the Sith Empire and the Galactic Republic. Which of the following classes belongs to the Sith Empire?

Answer: Bounty hunter

This game is set in a historical period of the "Star Wars" universe about 3600 years before the events of the films. The background story is that there is a tenuous peace between the Galactic Republic, which is aligned with the Jedi Order, and the emergent Sith Empire.

Although players must choose to align themselves with either faction, a character's personal morality may lie anywhere along the dark/light spectrum. Hence, character belonging to the dark side may still support the Republic and light side characters may support the Sith Empire for whatever reasons.

In this game, bounty hunters and troopers have similar skills in that both are proficient in using blaster weapons, although the former work for the Sith Empire while the latter work for the Republic. Smugglers perform covert operations for the Republic; Imperial agents are covert operatives for the Empire. Consulars are one of two Force-using classes that belong to the Jedi, the other being Jedi Knights, with the former focusing on using their Force powers for offence and defense, while the latter has a stronger preference for using lightsabers.

The Empire also has two Force-user classes: the Sith Inquisitor, which is the dark counterpart of the Jedi Consular, while the Sith Warrior is the counterpart of the Jedi Knight. A notable feature of the game is that it is the first fully voiced massive multiplayer online game, as the developer, BioWare, collaborated with LucasArts, which cast voice actors and recorded more than 3000 lines of dialogue for use in the game, to allow for complex conversations with emotional depth. Players as well as non-player characters can use full voice dialog.
9. In this shooter game, the characters have been transported to a hostile realm to become food for the minions and abominations of Oryx, the realm's ruler, which they must fight to survive. What is the game called?

Answer: Realm of the Mad God

Players in this game can choose from 16 character classes and can earn experience, fame, and better equipment by shooting projectiles at enemies. Play begins in a safe zone called the Nexus, which contains portals to more than 50 dungeons in the game. Oryx, the titular mad god, is the main antagonist and has thousands of minions.

When players have defeated all of certain quest monsters in a realm, they may have the opportunity to face Oryx himself, who has three increasingly stronger forms that are confronted progressively.

A key feature of the game design is that character death is permanent: upon death, characters are permanently lost with all their equipment. Fortunately, players have the option to escape to the Nexus at the push at the button, where they cannot be killed.

In the game's backstory it is explained that Oryx allied himself with dark forces so that all those who fought against his enemies would be restored to life after falling in battle whereas those who fought against him would die permanently when killed.
10. In this game, which blends elements of science fiction and fantasy, players take the role of an immortal who must strive to become a god and defend the planet Aelion from alien invasion. What is it called?

Answer: Skyforge

In this game, the player's character is an immortal with incredible celestial powers. Rather than choosing a permanent class that one is locked into, players gain the opportunity to switch between seventeen classes as they advance in the game. Advancement does not involve "levels" as is common in many other role-playing games, but gaining "prestige", which allows one access to additional content, equipment, and followers.

The backstory of Skyforge is that the planet Aelion was once protected by a Greater God named Aeli, who helped civilization flourish, but who has since disappeared. Aelion is now protected by immortals (who are player characters) and a few lesser gods, and is threatened by hostile gods and alien forces from neighboring planets. Players engage in a variety of missions around the planet such as fighting alien invaders.
