Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" began development as an NES title.

Answer: True

Nintendo began development of the third "Zelda" title in 1988 as an 8-Bit game. In 1989, Nintendo moved the project to the Super Famicom, which they were developing at the time.
2. Chronologically, "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" occurs before "The Legend of Zelda" and "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link".

Answer: True

Debate rages on what the actual timeline of the "Zelda" series actually is. Strangely enough, as the series goes on Nintendo keeps going back earlier and earlier in Hyrule's history, so the two original NES games are actually toward the end of the time line. "The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap" is one of the earliest titles in the timeline. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" introduced the dual timeline. "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker", ""The Legend of Zelda: The Phantom Hourglass", and ""The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks" are are commonly held to be in the same timeline.
3. What following statement is NOT true of "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past"?

Answer: This was the first "Zelda" game from an overhead prespective that introduced a jumping mechanic

The first "Zelda" game with an overhead perspective, rather than the sidescrolling action of "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" which does feature jumping, to include jumping is the Gameboy title "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening". "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" does include the easter egg of the Cuckoo's Revenge. If you attack one of the chickens long enough, an flock of chickens will begin attacking Link until he enters a different portion of the overworld map.
4. In the American version, Agahnim, Ganon's alter-ego, is a wizard. What is he in the Japanese version?

Answer: Priest

In the 1980s and 1990s, Nintendo had a strictly enforced content guide they went by, and cut all religious references and allusions in officially sanctioned Nintendo titles, whether they were developed by Nintendo or third party developers.

Agahnim was originally a priest in the Japanese version. The original title of "A Link to the Past" is actually "The Legend of Zelda: Triforce of the Gods", which was changed for international markets due to its religious references. Likewise, the ancient language of Hylia, which is unreadable fonts in "A Link to the Past" contains Egyptian hieroglyphics in the Japanese version, and includes both vultures and ankhs.
5. "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" is the longest "Zelda" game released between 1986 and 2009 in terms of dungeons. How many dungeons are there?

Answer: Twelve

In terms of how many dungeons are present in the game, "The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" is the longest "Zelda" title with twelve dungeons. "Ocarina of Time" places second with eleven dungeons.

The original 1986 game has eighteen dungeons, but only nine per each quest.
6. Mario makes a cameo in the game in what form?

Answer: Mario appears in some pictures on walls

Mario appears in paintings throughout Hyrule. If you pull on the paintings rupees will come out. Mario appears in "Majora's Mask" as a mask on the Happy Mask Salesman backpack. The Lon Lon Ranch owners Ingo and Talon resemble Mario and Luigi in "Ocarina of Time".

Fellow FunTrivia Player SandK contributes this interesting information as well: "In "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time", if you look through the windows, in first person view, in the Hyrule Castle Garden when you first meet Zelda, you will see a few pictures of Mario and some other Mario characters.
7. How many Rupees are present in Chris Houlihan's room?

Answer: 45 Blue Rupees

Chris Houlihan's room, though virtually unknown in the early 1990s, has become rather famous. There are forty five blue rupees present in the game, worth two hundred twenty five rupees. Chris Houlihan is present only in the original SNES release. In all other ports and releases of the game, including the Virtual Console release, the reference to Chris Houlihan is removed though the room itself is still present but now named the Top Secret Room.
8. In game, what NPC (non-playable character) dies due to an attack, only to be revealed restored to life in the game's ending sequence?

Answer: Loyal Sage

The Loyal Sage appears early in the game, where Link leaves Princess Zelda to stay in the Sanctuary. After Link wins the three Pendants and the Master Sword, Zelda telepathically communicates with Link. The Loyal Sage dies defending Princess Zelda. In the ending we see the Loyal Sage has been brought back to life.

Aginah is roughly an equivalent of Sahhasrahla. He is a wise old sage living in the desert.

The King of Hyrule only appears in the end sequence united with Princess Zelda and the six maidens.

The Flute Boy is a lost boy who wandered into the Dark World and has been transformed. He cannot go back to the Light World. Link first learns of the Flute Boy from the boy's father. The Flute Boy gives Link a shovel in the Dark World. Once Link finds the Flute, he plays a melody to the Flute Boy. The Flute Boy is then transformed into a wooden statue. Like the Loyal Sage, the Triforce restore the Flute Boy to his Hylian form and his united with his faterh.
9. The Mad Batter is a bat demon imprisoned in a magic fountain. What item must Link use to free the Mad Batter from his prison?

Answer: Magic Powder

The Mad Batter is a bat demon imprisoned in a magic fountain. After Link sprinkles Magic Powder on the magic fountain, the Mad Batter appears. He is highly irate and curses Link. The Mad Batter's revenge, strangely enough, is to double Link's magic power.
10. The mask that the Helmasaur King wears can be damaged by bombs and what other item?

Answer: Magic Hammer

The Helmasaur King is the final boss of the first dungeon in the Dark World. Link can attack this masked monster with either bombs or the hammer which Link picks up in that same dungeon. He also appears in a secret dungeon only available after beating "A Link to the Past" and "Four Swords" on the Game Boy Advanced port.
