The Famous "Chris Houlihan Room" Quiz

He has a whole room (albeit virtual) in honor of him on "Zelda: A Link to the Past" on SNES. Now, he has an entire quiz about that room! Here's hoping these questions won't be as tricky as actually getting to the room itself.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which item must a player have to access the Chris Houlihan room?

Answer: Pegasus Boots

You obtain this item fairly early on (after obtaining the Pendant of Courage) from Sahasrahla. Although their main function is to break through weak falls and knock items out of remote places, it is needed to access this room because of its dash ability.

The amount of time the players has to get from the Sanctuary to what would be the castle basement is shortened enough for you to be sent to the Chris Houlihan room if you use the boots properly.
2. What color are the Rupees found in the secret room?

Answer: Blue

These rupees each have a value of five. So, the room has 225 rupees in total in it. The layout of this room is the same as other blue carpeted areas in the game, so they blend in with the basement floor.
3. How many Rupees are in the room?

Answer: 45

Strangely, there are no rupees on the three by three area grid once you enter the room. However, to your north, west, and east are three by three areas of blue rupees. West and east of the grid to the north are another couple of grids of blue rupees. Beyond the center rupee of the northern wall (walking straight north upon entering the room is Sahasrahla plaque.
4. Who is the Chris Houlihan the room was named after?

Answer: A "Nintendo Power" subscriber

Chris won a contest in a 1990 issue, which promised the winner he would have his own room in the next Zelda game. "A Link to the Past" was, in fact, the next game in the series, coming out the next year. The rest is history.
5. The plaque on the north wall of the Chris Houlihan room tells the player what?

Answer: Not to tell anyone else about the room

When listening to the plaque, you'll get the message that you're listening to Chris Houlihan and that he doesn't wants you to "keep (the room) a secret between us." This plaque is regularly used to communicate with Sahasrahla, which is coincidental, given that the item he gives you (Pegasus Boots) is the item you need to access this room.
6. What is an alternate way you can end up in the Chris Houlihan room?

Answer: Having a game cartridge that malfunctions on the area of the map you are entering

The game cartridge was created in a way that whenever there is a problem transitioning to a certain part of the map, it will transport you here. The theory is that there will always be a problem with the map going from the large areas of the sanctuary to the outside map to the castle basement in such a short time. That is why that is primary method of getting there. So, the room cannot be accessed this way through using a Wii-downloaded version, which would not transport you there upon a cartridge glitch. How can it when there is no cartridge?
7. The entrance to the legendary room may lead you to the castle basement.

Answer: True

You actually need to go to the location of the Chris Houlihan room earlier in the game when you meet your father, who gives you his sword. This hole is on the side of the castle wall under a lone small bush.
8. Where is the best place to start from to access this hidden room?

Answer: The sanctuary

If you choose to start at the sanctuary, you need to rush out and past the garden (use your Pegasus Boots) as fast as possible and, still running, head west toward an area with many trees. Once you quickly pass this area, head west again to the next square of map. Go south, turn east, and, if you go north far enough, you'll be at the area of the bush (Chris Houlihan hole) using the quickest route possible from a newly-started game.
9. Where will you find yourself after exiting through the only door on the south?

Answer: Outside of Link's house

The fact that leaving the room leads you outside of Link's house is linked to the fact that the room is a glitch and you are being sent there so as to avoid the glitch. Your having been taken from an area you on the map to one that only exists as a glitch means and then leaving means, in essence, that you are restarting your game.
10. The secret of the Chris Houlihan room was leaked to many gamers immediately after the game's release.

Answer: False

In fact, Chris was told not to tell any gamers about the location of the room. This, combined with the message of the plaque on the northern wall, combined to prevent the vast majority of gamers of knowing about this room for several years. The room was not included in any strategy guide and it was not until the late '90s that this became one of the most popular "Zelda" secrets.
