Question 1 of 10
1. The most common sprite of MISSINGNO. is a combination of glitched tiles shaped in a way that makes MISSINGNO. resemble which letter, but backwards? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. It has been demonstrated that MISSINGNO. was used a placeholder for Pokemon that would appear in the games but that, in the end, were not programmed. When the games were released, multiple MISSINGNO. were left with little or no differences between each other, but with different Index Numbers that identify them as different Pokemon. Knowing that, how many MISSINGNO. exist in total? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. While there are multiple MISSINGNO. with one different Index Number each, they all share the Pokédex Entry (that is, the number displayed in the Pokédex we are all familiar with). What is the Pokédex Number all MISSINGNO. have? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Apart from corrupting the Hall of Fame, what is MISSINGNO. famous for? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. MISSINGNO. is a dual-type Pokemon. Its second type is Normal, while its first type is unused by real Pokemon and is mostly famous for being MISSINGNO.'s primary type. Which is MISSINGNO.'s first type? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. MISSINGNO. has three basic moves, that is, moves known from the start at any level. One of them is Sky Attack, but the other two happen to be two instances of the same move. What is MISSINGNO.'s duplicated basic move? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. MISSINGNO. features very lopsided stats. While four of them are very low, the other one stands out heavily and is in fact the highest among all existing Pokemon. What is MISSINGNO.'s highest stat? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. MISSINGNO.'s typing, base moves, and stats are, among other qualities, randomly determined by data in the game that has another purpose and thus doesn't follow the structure required to be coherent Pokemon data as the last three questions prove. What is, in reality, the purpose of the data that determines the typing, base moves, and stats of MISSINGNO.? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. While most MISSINGNO. share the glitched fontsprite, three of them have a different fontsprite. What of the following is NOT the fontsprite of any of the last three MISSINGNO.? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Into which Pokemon does MISSINGNO. evolve? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The most common sprite of MISSINGNO. is a combination of glitched tiles shaped in a way that makes MISSINGNO. resemble which letter, but backwards?

Answer: L

MISSINGNO. is shaped like a backwards L. The reason is that MISSINGNO. has an invalid value for its fontsprite size (8x8 tiles, while only 5x5, 6x6, 7x7 are valid). This randomly causes it to have the shape it has.

Answer: Thirty-nine

There are a total of thirty-nine instances of MISSINGNO., which suggest that a total of 190 different Pokemon were once planned to appear in the games. The Index Numbers of MISSINGNO. are scattered between those of real Pokemon, reinforcing the thirty-nine additional Pokemon theory.
3. While there are multiple MISSINGNO. with one different Index Number each, they all share the Pokédex Entry (that is, the number displayed in the Pokédex we are all familiar with). What is the Pokédex Number all MISSINGNO. have?

Answer: 000

All thirty-nine MISSINGNO are intentionally programmed to have a Pokédex Entry or 000. Having a Pokédex Number outside the valid range of 001 to 151 causes MISSINGNO. to feature incoherent or glitched qualities, like sprite and stats.
4. Apart from corrupting the Hall of Fame, what is MISSINGNO. famous for?

Answer: The quantity of the sixth item in the bag is increased by 128

Whenever a Pokemon is seen or caught the game makes the corresponding change in the memory, with the position affected being determined by the Pokédex Number of the Pokemon. This way the Pokédex can display the Pokemon as seen or caught accordingly. Since MISSINGNO. has an invalid Pokédex Number and the game isn't prepared to handle that, seeing MISSINGNO. ends up affecting the part of the memory that determines the sixth item quantity.
5. MISSINGNO. is a dual-type Pokemon. Its second type is Normal, while its first type is unused by real Pokemon and is mostly famous for being MISSINGNO.'s primary type. Which is MISSINGNO.'s first type?

Answer: Bird

Bird is a type that, while programmed into the game, it's not used by any real Pokemon and has no weaknesses, resistances, or immunities. A theory is that the Bird type could be a prototype version of the existing Flying type. MISSINGNO. was not programmed to be a Bird type intentionally though.
6. MISSINGNO. has three basic moves, that is, moves known from the start at any level. One of them is Sky Attack, but the other two happen to be two instances of the same move. What is MISSINGNO.'s duplicated basic move?

Answer: Water Gun

Although it's not possible to learn the same move twice by leveling up, MISSINGNO. is an exception because the two Water Gun are defined as basic moves. Like we just saw with the typing, MISSINGNO.'s basic moves were not programmed intentionally either.
7. MISSINGNO. features very lopsided stats. While four of them are very low, the other one stands out heavily and is in fact the highest among all existing Pokemon. What is MISSINGNO.'s highest stat?

Answer: Attack

MISSINGNO.'s Base Attack is 136, surpassing Dragonite, which has the highest among real Pokemon with 134. However, MISSINGNO.'s other stats are incredibly weak:
Base HP: 33
Base Defense: 0
Base Speed: 29
Base Special: 6
No real Pokemon has a Defense or Special stat as low as MISSINGNO.. MISSINGNO.'s stats were not programmed on purpose either.

Answer: Data related to the parties of some trainers

The data that determines some of the qualities that most stand out about MISSINGNO. is taken from the parties of a few trainers, more specifically, Bikers. This occurs because MISSINGNO.'s invalid Pokedex Number of 000 happens to randomly lead to the part where data of their Pokemon is stored in the memory.

For example, MISSINGNO. is part Bird-type just because the second Pokemon of one specific Biker is Voltorb, whose Index Number is 6. 6 happens to be the Index Number of the type Bird as well.
9. While most MISSINGNO. share the glitched fontsprite, three of them have a different fontsprite. What of the following is NOT the fontsprite of any of the last three MISSINGNO.?

Answer: Omastar fossil

It is believed that the last three MISSINGNO. were assigned these three sprites so that the game can access them more quickly when needed. Ghost appears in the Pokemon Tower of Lavender Town while the Kabutops and Aerodactyl fossils are shown in the museum of Pewter City (but no Omastar fossil is shown).
10. Into which Pokemon does MISSINGNO. evolve?

Answer: MISSINGNO. does not evolve

MISSINGNO. was purposely programmed not to evolve. However MISSINGNO. is often mistaken with 'M, which does evolve into Kangaskhan at any level and into Clefable at level 128. However, MISSINGNO. and 'M are completely different Pokemon because MISSINGNO. was programmed into the games to some extent as a placeholder. On the other hand, 'M is merely a Glitch or Garbage Pokemon, with an invalid Index Number.

However, 'M happens to share the Pokedex Number of 000 with MISSINGNO. by chance, and thus shares most qualities with it (sprite, typing, stats, basic moves...).

This makes MISSINGNO. and 'M very similar in appearance.
