Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Area of a ring of dough

Answer: Donut Land

This land, the second to be visited in "Super Mario World" (SNES) is home to the Green Switch Palace, access to the Star Road, the first Ghost House and Secret Ghost House and the 'Top Secret Area'. Here, Mario can obtain his first cape, which allows him to float through the air and fly to high places.

The boss who rules this land from Castle #2 is Morton, who also ruled the Desert Land of "Super Mario Bros. 3" (NES).
2. Botanical organism that is also a man-eating fish

Answer: Piranha Plant

The Piranha Plant has been around since "Super Mario Bros." for the arcade and NES. This creature, most commonly found in pipes throughout the lands will pop out and snap its razor-sharp teeth at Mario. In earlier games, these creatures were well-timed, often appearing in regular intervals, but as the series grew, they not only took on minds of their own, but they gained fire abilities in "Super Mario RPG" (SNES) and left the pipes.

They also appeared in "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening" (Game Boy) in the Bottle Grotto.
3. Male homo sapien made of flaming gas from outer space

Answer: Starman

The Starman also first appeared in "Super Mario Bros." for the NES and it's been a symbol of power through the series. In many games, the Starman can be used to protect the user with invincibility and it can allow the player to literally run through enemies, killing them in the process. Starman has varied through later games, often appearing as rewards (in "Mario Party") and as weapons.

The Starman also appears in "Super Smash Bros. Melee" (Gamecube).
4. Fuzzy pitted fruit

Answer: Peach

Starting in "Super Mario 64", the first three-dimensional Mario game, Princess Toadstool's name was changed to Princess Peach. She is the primary princess of the series though Mario has also saved 'Pauline' in the "Donkey Kong" era. Princess Daisy also appeared as a character in games from "Mario Tennis" (Nintendo 64) onwards. Princess Peach was a playable character for the first time in "Super Mario Bros. 2" (aka "Doki Doki Panic") (NES), but she also joined in for "Super Mario RPG" (SNES) and "Super Smash Bros. Melee" (Gamecube).
5. The entryway of the millennium

Answer: The Thousand Year Door

"The Thousand Year Door" was the subtitle for the second game in the "Paper Mario" series, which first began on the Nintendo 64. This game puts Mario and the gang into the exciting world of the second dimension and back into an engaging role-playing game.

It is often regarded as one of the best selling games for the Gamecube due to its popularity on both systems. This also persuaded developers Intelligent Systems to produce "Super Paper Mario" for the Wii.
6. Deadly region of above-ground magma

Answer: Lethal Lava Land

This is the seventh world from "Super Mario 64" and it's based around a land situated entirely on top of a lake of lava. The area features many enemies that will bounce Mario into the lava as well as a volcano which will spout fireballs on a regular basis. This stage is found in the basement of Princess Peach's castle along with Hazy Maze Cave, Shifting Sand Land, and Dire Dire Docks.
7. A guided journey involving a mushroom

Answer: Toadstool Tour

This Mario game is for the Gamecube system and it's the sequel to the moderately popular "Mario Golf" for the Nintendo 64. It was followed shortly after by "Advance Tour" for the Game Boy Advance handheld. The game features numerous characters, stages, and unlockables that could keep the player entertained. By connecting the Game Boy Advance's "Advance Tours" to the game, the player could earn even more.
8. Male siblings who are in posession of blunt pounding objects

Answer: Hammer Bros.

Hammer Bros. have been an important enemy in the series since "Super Mario Bros." was first released. Ever since, Mario and friends have been hit by large mallets that are either swatted or thrown at them by these characters (who often appear on their own or in duos).

The Hammer Bros. are also playable characters in games such as "Super Mario Strikers" and "Super Mario Baseball", sports games for the Nintendo Gamecube.
9. Half a dozen pieces of non-paper money covered with an expensive metal

Answer: Six Golden Coins

"Six Golden Coins" was the name of the second Mario adventure released on the Game Boy. It marks the first appearance of Wario in a Mario game where he kidnapped Princess Daisy and Mario was sent to collect six golden coins to stop him. Despite the fact that few of the elements used in the game were used in future games (for example, Mario owned a castle), the game was popular enough to snatch a Player's Choice title.
10. The most costly space on a 'Monopoly' board occupied by shrieking ghosts

Answer: Banshee Boardwalk

This stage in the Special Cup series of "Mario Kart 64" is a winding, narrow track occupied by ghosts, bats, and other ghoulish creatures. Because of the slender track, players can easily fall off and take a penalty. It is the penultimate racetrack in the game, only followed by the lengthy Rainbow Road. Similar tracks (eg. Broken Pier in "Mario Kart: Super Circuit") have appeared in other games in the series. Banshee Boardwalk also reappeared in the Retro Grand Prix of "Mario Kart DS" in the Lightning Cup where it was the third-to-last track.
