Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Initially in the "Mass Effect" series, the Reapers only turned their vanquished into Husks. In the two-and-a-half years since then, in "Mass Effect 3", their corrupted captives took on more diverse and sinister forms. Which heavily armored Reapers units towered above the battlefield, and would rush enemies with their large claws?

Answer: Brutes

In the first two "Mass Effect" games, the Reapers only corrupted humans to be their unwilling soldiers. With the Reapers' galaxy-wide invasion well underway, they had access to all the galaxy's species, and were able to create new and disturbing troops. One new and terrifying unit was the Brute, a hulking creature made from turians and a few other bits.

Brutes had massive claws and heavy plates attached to them to prevent damage. They would shield their vulnerable parts while slowly walking towards their targets. When in range, they would run and lunge with their massive claws, dealing high melee damage. While heavily armored, they had no ranged attacks. They were most dangerous in small spaces with no way to maneuver away from them.
2. Cerberus was always a crafty organization, and would equip their troops with different kits to employ varying tactics against their enemies. Which Cerberus units brought full riot shields into battle?

Answer: Guardians

Guardians did not have shields, barriers, or armor, but they did bring full-sized riot shields to the battlefield. The shields could stop shots from most weapons (some weapons and weapon mods had armor-piercing capabilities). Guardians would walk towards their enemies to use their deadly Talon pistols, which were more like small shotguns. Guardians were particularly weak to biotics. A simple Pull would rip their shields from their hands, leaving their low health open to all other attacks.

The shields had a small window near the top for the Guardians to look through. The achievement "Mail Slot" could be earned by killing Guardians ten times by shooting through this opening.
3. An alien species known as the rachi was once a galactic threat, 2000 years before the events in the "Mass Effect" series. They made a brief reappearance in the first game, but came back in force in "Mass Effect 3", corrupted by the Reapers. What was the name of the Reaper units created by corrupting rachni?

Answer: Ravagers

The rachni came in many varieties in "Mass Effect". In "Mass Effect 3", the basic worker had been corrupted into the Ravager. The Ravager had a basic rachni frame, with two powerful cannons mounted to it, and many flashy sacks all over its body. Ravagers would release Swarmers periodically, or when their sacks were shot open. Swarmers were corrupted rachni workers, which would rush enemies for an explosive suicide attack. Swarmers were easy to kill, but enough of them could destroy shields and push characters out of cover, and into a Ravager's sights.
4. While enemies in "Mass Effect 3" were diversified, and worked together to create challenging situations for Shepard, some had specialties that could become liabilities. Which geth unit could sometimes explode when killed?

Answer: Geth Pyros

"Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3" both featured flamethrower-wielding enemies. Often times, the tanks on the backs of these enemies were weak points that could be shot. Once the seal of a tank was broken, it and the entire enemy would explode a few seconds later.

The only flamethrower enemies in "Mass Effect 3" were the Geth Pyros. They could easily be spotted by their unique yellow paint job. They had armor instead of health and could be difficult to take down. The fuel tanks on their backs were the best places to attack.
5. Cerberus was morally corrupt, delving into unethical experiments to enhance and equip their troops. Sometimes, though, the old fashioned methods were also used. Which Cerberus units carried swords into battle?

Answer: Phantoms

Phantoms were one of the more difficult Cerberus soldier types to deal with. They could cloak themselves, and were the only Cerberus enemy to use barriers and biotics. They were small women, and very agile, making them difficult to shoot. In the multiplayer component, if a Phantom got close enough to a player, she could use her sword to instantly take out that player for the round, without any chance of a revival.
6. Some enemies were so big that Shepard could only see and fight them from afar. Which large, flying Reaper unit was only seen in the single player portion of "Mass Effect 3"?

Answer: Harvesters

Harvesters were large Reaper enemies that flew around and dropped off other units. They were only seen in the single player part of the game, and only from afar. They would try to fly away if they took too much damage, but would still die if Shepard did damage fast enough. Harvesters were a corrupted form of the identically named Harvester from "Mass Effect 2".
7. Shepard's enemies were quite intelligent in "Mass Effect 3". Sometimes Cerberus would deploy deadly turrets to keep Shepard in cover while other troops moved to flank the Commander. Which Cerberus units would set up automated turrets?

Answer: Engineers

Cerberus Engineers would carry a compact turret on their back. When they got close to the front lines, they would deploy their turret to suppress enemies. Unlike the geth turrets, the Cerberus turrets were much more durable and more deadly. The automatic cannons could quickly rip through shields and health, and could make reviving allies very difficult. Turrets were difficult for most classes to deal with, but those with the Sabotage power could take over a Turret to make it fire on its allies. Also, players could preemptively save themselves a turret problem by killing the Engineer. Shooting the turret while it was still on the Engineer's back would make it explode.
8. "Mass Effect 3" had a wide array of enemy types. Some would try to shoot Shepard from a distance, while others would try to close the gap to use close-range weapons. Which geth units used Geth Plasma Shotguns?

Answer: Geth Hunters

Geth Hunters were one of only two units that would cloak themselves. They would use their invisibility to approach enemies, and then shoot them at close range with their powerful plasma shotguns. Players had to look for the shimmer of a cloaked enemy, which could sometimes be difficult in low light conditions. Fortunately, Geth Hunters would usually walk straight towards their target, and out in the open.

Their shields were also weak, so once spotted, it was usually easy to destroy them before they got close. If they did get close, they would decloak just before firing.
9. More than the geth or the Reapers, Cerberus was known for being tactical and sneaky when fighting Shepard. Which Cerberus units would use smoke grenades to hide their movements?

Answer: Centurions

Centurions were often found in groups with Assault Troopers. They had shields, but were otherwise very similar. Centurions would throw down smoke grenades to conceal their movement, and that of their allies. Targeting systems could not penetrate smoke to identify hidden enemies.

Some weapons, like the Javelin, had special scopes with thermal imaging, and could see enemies through fog. Other weapons could be modified to have a thermal scope.
10. During their invasion, the Reapers corrupted any species they came across, creating new, terrifying troops of their own. Which Reaper units, first seen on Palaven's moon, bore a striking resemblance to turians?

Answer: Marauder

Marauders were seen soon after the opening missions, on Palaven's moon. They were a step above Husks and Cannibals, and given shields. They could also give Husks and Cannibals armor plates, making them more difficult to kill. Marauders looked like corrupted turians, and even used the same hardware. Marauders used Phaeston assault rifles, just like the turian military.

A Marauder was also the last enemy fought in the "Mass Effect 3" campaign.
