Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "This mission just got a lot more complicated." Who said this line?

Answer: Captain Anderson

Anderson said this line near the beginning of the game. "Mass Effect" started off with Commander Shepard on the Normandy in transit to the planet Eden Prime. An ancient alien relic had been found on the planet, and the Normandy's crew was tasked with retrieving it before the news got out.

During the trip, marines on Eden Prime were attacked by an unknown force. A video of the attack was sent to the Normandy. After watching it, Anderson uttered this line.
2. "Have you ever faced an asari commando unit before? Few humans have." Who said this line?

Answer: Matriarch Benezia

This line was said by Benezia just before Shepard fought her. Benezia was an asari matriarch, and Saren's second-in-command. She was overseeing the breeding of the rachni on Noveria.

Interestingly, Liara, Benezia's daughter, would say this exact same line when Shepard first met her on Illium, in "Mass Effect 2".
3. "The Normandy isn't equipped to land in exploding volcanoes." Who said this line?

Answer: Joker

Joker was the very skilled pilot of the Normandy. Liara was being held underground on the volcanic world of Therrum, and Shepard's efforts to free her destabilized the volcano she was in. Liara and Shepard just managed to get out alive, thanks to Joker's excellent piloting.
4. "A thousand feelers appraise you as meat, good only to dig or decompose." Who said this line?

Answer: The Thorian

The Thorian was an ancient lifeform on Feros. It was alive during the prothean reign over the universe, and could understand the technology developed for a prothean mind. Saren needed it to understand the prothean beacons.

The Thorian created a clone of an asari to talk to Shepard, and said this line when they first met. The Thorian had helped Saren find the Cipher. After that, Saren betrayed it, and sent geth to kill it. Naturally, when Shepard came along looking for the same thing, the Thorian was distrustful.
5. "This isn't your mission, Saren. What are you doing here?" Who said this line?

Answer: Nihlus Kryik

Nihlus was the first non-human seen in the series. He was a turian Spectre, and was on the Normandy to evaluate Shepard as a possible candidate for the elite group. When he learned about the attack on Eden Prime, he moved ahead of Shepard to cover more ground.

He caught up with his old friend, Saren, another Spectre. Nihlus didn't know that Saren was actually behind the attack, and when Nihlus lowered his guard, Saren executed him.
6. "Can you hear me out there? I'm trapped. I need help!" Who said this line?

Answer: Liara T'Soni

Liara said this when Shepard first met her on Therrum. She was studying the Prothean ruins there when the geth attacked. She ran inside the structure and accidentally activated a containment field. She was stuck until Shepard freed her by boring through the ruins with a mining laser.
7. "Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh. You touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance." Who said this line?

Answer: Sovereign

Shepard first got to talk to Sovereign during the mission to Virmire. There, Shepard found another prothean beacon like the one on Eden Prime, except not damaged. After using the beacon, Shepard came across a hologram of Sovereign, and made the horrifying discovery that Sovereign was not a Reaper ship, but rather an actual Reaper.
8. "We sing for those left behind." Who said this line?

Answer: Rachni Queen

The Rachni Queen was found on Noveria. After defeating Benezia, Shepard had an opportunity to talk to the queen. She had been grown and tortured to extract information on the Mu Relay. Her children had also been bred to be a form of mindless, vicious drones for Saren's purposes. The Rachni communicated telepathically, and often used music metaphors to describe their speech and thoughts.
9. "Is submission not preferable to extinction?" Who said this line?

Answer: Saren Arterius

Shepard fought Saren for the first time on Virmire. During their confrontation, Saren explained his motives, and tried to convince Shepard to join him. He knew about the Reapers, and knew that the galaxy could not oppose them. His goal was to show the Reapers that organics could be useful, hoping to spare his civilization from total annihilation.

He did not understand that the Reapers did not care, and would destroy everything anyway, in the end.
10. "Hold the line." Who said this line?

Answer: Captain Kirrahe

Captain Kirrahe was the salarian in command of the STG contingent on Virmire. He was a fan of speeches to rally and motivate his troops. He acknowledged that the salarians usually used espionage, sabotage, and politicking to solve their problems, but in the end, they still needed regular troops to hold the line.
