Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which squad member started off on the Normandy?

Answer: Kaidan

Of your six main squad members, only one started off with Shepard. Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko was a Sentinel on the Normandy from the very beginning of the game. He was first seen in the cockpit talking to Joker. He also was your very first main squad member when you landed on Eden Prime.
2. Which squad member was recruited on Eden Prime?

Answer: Ashley

You started the game with Kaidan and Jenkins in your squad. After landing on Eden Prime, during the first encounter with the geth, Jenkins was killed. Soon after that, Shepard met Ashley, the sole surviving marine from her unit, the 212. The 212 was wiped out fighting the surprise attack on Eden Prime. She joined Shepard to help find the Prothean artifact and fight the geth.
3. Which group did Garrus work for before joining you?

Answer: Citadel Security

Citadel Security (C-Sec) was the organization that policed the Citadel. It was created by the turians, and was run like a military outfit, rather than a regular police force. Garrus was the C-Sec officer charged with investigating Saren. His investigation was cut short by Executor Pallin, and Saren was not convicted. Even after Shepard's first meeting with the council, he continued to follow leads.

He could be found investigating the medical clinic run by Dr. Michel, or later at the C-Sec academy if you instead sought out only Wrex.
4. Which squad member was on a Pilgrimage?

Answer: Tali

Tali was a quarian on her Pilgrimage. She was searching for information on the development of the geth since the Morning War, 300 years before the events of "Mass Effect". Quarian society was contained on the Migrant Fleet. It was the single largest fleet in the galaxy. The Quarians were exiled from their homeworld as a result of the Morning War. On the ships, with their sterile environments, their already weak immune systems became virtually non-existent. Quarians thus had to wear full body containment suits to avoid infection of contamination. The Pilgrimage was a rite of passage that all young quarians underwent. The purpose of the Pilgrimage was to get young quarians out into the galaxy to find something of value to return to the Migrant Fleet. It was also to help young quarians see and appreciate the larger galactic community, as well as increase appreciation for the Migrant Fleet and the sense of family and belonging that it provided. Once a quarian found something of value, he/she would return to the Migrant Fleet to prove that they would be an asset on their ship of choice. Gifts were almost never rejected.

During her travels, Tali came across evidence that Saren had betrayed the council. She then joined up with Shepard to stop Saren. If you completed the side-quest UNC: Geth Incursions in the Armstrong Cluster, you recovered data concerning the development of the geth. Tali asked you for a copy of the data if you talked to her. If you give her the data, she will use it as her gift to complete her Pilgrimage.
5. Which species was not represented in Shepard's squad?

Answer: Salarian

Five species are represented by Shepard's six squad members. Ashley and Kaidan were both human. Garrus was a turian, Liara was an asari, Tali was a quarian, and Wrex was an old krogan. None of your squad members were salarian, though on Virmire, you did end up working with a salarian STG. Salarians are represented in "Mass Effect 2" by Mordin Solus.
6. What was Liara's title?

Answer: Doctor

Liara was generally the last squad member Shepard recruited. She was a Prothean expert with a doctorate from the University of Thessia (Thessia was the asari homeworld). Liara was a mere 106 years old, which was quite young by asari standards. Asari could live to about 1000 years. Because of her age, her new discoveries and theories were not given the same credit or weight as other Prothean scholars.

Matriarchs were asari that had entered their final stage in life, at around the 700-year mark. Liara's mother, Benezia, who worked for Saran, was a Matriarch. Asari lifespans are often divided into three stages: Maiden, Matron, and Matriarch. Justicars were introduced in "Mass Effect 2". They suffered a genetic condition that did not allow any other beings to bond with them without suffering fatal brain injuries. It was a very rare condition, and often hushed up by the asari.
7. Which squad member had encountered Saren before joining your squad?

Answer: Wrex

Talking to Wrex could get you some pretty interesting stories, including one about Saren. Wrex once worked with a mercenary group that raided some ships for Saran. He didn't even know Saren at the time. On one mission, after a few months of raiding ships, Saren walked through a recently raided ship as the mercs were picking through the cargo.

He didn't say anything, even when called. Wrex became uneasy and left the job without even getting paid. Every other mercenary from that mission turned up dead within a week.
8. Which squad members had parents in or affiliated with the military?

Answer: All squad members had parents in or affiliated with the military

Ashley's father and grandfather were both in the Alliance Navy, and when she became old enough, she enlisted. Ashley's grandfather was General Williams, the only human to ever surrender to an alien race. He and his name bore this stigma for decades to come. Ashley's father and Ashley herself both strived to be exemplary soldiers to redeem the Williams name.

Turian societies revolved around a military structure, and every turian was part of it. Both Garrus and his father were in the turian military before joining Citadel Security (C-Sec). C-Sec, created by the turians, and with a large turian population, was run in a very military fashion. Garrus was once considered for Spectre training, but his father didn't approve of the way Spectres were allowed to skirt the law to achieve their ends, and Garrus dropped out.

Liara's mother was Matriarch Benezia, who commanded respect, as well as an asari commando unit. She worked for Saren and became his second-in-command.

Tali's father was an admiral on the Admiralty Board of the Migrant Fleet. Being the only child of such a high ranking officer, Tali felt a lot of pressure to bring an exceptional gift back for her Pilgrimage.

Wrex's father was a battlemaster who had a different vision of the krogan future. Wrex was trying to bring about unity of the krogan people in order to combat the genophage and restore the image of the krogan. His father, like many warlords, was resigned to the effects of the genophage. He continued to fight in the tradition of the krogan, refusing to acknowledge that their species could no longer afford to do so. Wrex was invited by his father to a Crush, a peaceful meeting on neutral territory, on a sacred burial ground where fighting was not permitted. When it was obvious that Wrex would not join his father, his father had his troops jump out of the graves and attack. Wrex's entire unit was overwhelmed and killed, and only Wrex escaped, but not before stabbing and killing his father.

Kaidan, when talking about his time in BAaT, said that Vyrnnus used to introduce himself as "I was at the helm of the dreadnaught that killed your father". Kaidan replied saying that his father hadn't fought in the war - that his father had retired.
9. Which character could you complete the game without?

Answer: Garrus

Kaidan started the game as one of your squad members. Ashley joined you on Eden Prime, regardless of your dialogue choices. Wrex joined you during your search for evidence against Saren, or in the C-Sec Academy if you completed the quest without him. Tali provided proof of Saren's betrayal and then joined your squad as a geth expert. Liara also had to join your squad as the only one who could interpret Shepard's images from the Prothean beacon.

Garrus could have joined the squad in one path to find proof against Saren. If you instead recruited Wrex, he met you in the C-Sec academy as you were leaving for the Normandy and asked to join you. You could have chosen to have him come along or not. Garrus was the one squad member that you did not have to recruit.
10. How many squad mates had the POTENTIAL to die in "Mass Effect"?

Answer: Three

Three squad members had the potential to die in "Mass Effect". On Virmire, Wrex learned about Saren's plans to cure the genophage and became distressed when salarian team decided to destroy the base. Before proceeding, Shepard had to talk to Wrex. If unpersuasive choices were made, Shepard or Ashley killed Wrex. On Virmire, either Ashley or Kaidan went with Kirrahe and his teams, who ended up at the anti-air tower. The other one helped set the nuclear device. Both Ashley and Kaidan came under attack, and you had to choose which one to save.

In total, the three squad members that had the potential to die were Ashley, Kaidan, and Wrex.
