Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Feros was a world covered in Prothean ruins. The human company ExoGeni set up a research base on the planet, and even founded a colony. What was the name of the colony on Feros?

Answer: Zhu's Hope

Zhu's Hope was a small human colony founded by the corporation ExoGeni. While the citizen's of Zhu's Hope were few and poorly equipped, they had made their home on Feros, and planned to hold and defend it (though there may have been other factors influencing that decision).

Zhu's Hope was situated near the top of an old Prothean skyscraper. The ExoGeni headquarters was located in a nearby tower. The two sites were connected by large bridges. Zhu's Hope was also home for a few ExoGeni employees.

Port Hanshan was the main landing site on Noveria. Eden Prime was a human colony world, and the first world that Shepard set foot on in "Mass Effect". Terra Nova was another human colony world, and was featured in the "Bring Down the Sky" downloadable content (DLC) for "Mass Effect".
2. The colony on Feros was suffering from a number of setbacks due to the geth siege. Shepard could ask different colonists if they needed help to keep the colony stable. Which of the following was not a problem that Shepard could fix for the colony?

Answer: No Medical Supplies

The geth siege made life difficult for the colonists. It became dangerous anywhere outside the colony, even if just to go to the garage. Shepard had the option to complete a number of side quests by venturing below the colony and fixing some issues.

Macha Doyle explained to Shepard that the water lines to Zhu's Hope had been deactivated. The only way to get them back online was by manually reopening them below the colony.

Davin Reynolds was worried that if the geth did not kill them outright, that the colonists would starve. The geth and the vicious leader of a varren pack made hunting too dangerous. Shepard could kill the varren pack leader and geth below Zhu's hope to make hunting conditions safer for the colonists once more.

May O'Connell was working on restoring power to the colony, but she did not have any power cells. Under the colony, where Shepard could kill the Alpha Varren, there was a damaged Grizzly from which power cells could be salvaged.
3. The geth attacked the ExoGeni headquarters on Feros, and made it their base of operations. Who was the leader of the ExoGeni survivors?

Answer: Ethan Jeong

Ethan Jeong was the leader of the ExoGeni survivors found at the way station. Despite the facts that Feros was under siege, and that the geth had occupied the ExoGeni headquarters, he was adamant about protecting ExoGeni's company secrets. He even became frantic when his fellow employees tried to use the radio, and started threatening his fellow survivors with his pistol. Once Shepard returned from the Exogeni headquarters, he mentioned that "... [I]t was too much to hope that the geth would kill [Shepard]." Shepard needed a very high Charm or Intimidate level to reason with Ethan. If Ethan couldn't be reasoned with, Shepard shot him before Ethan managed to shoot any of the other survivors.

The survivors had stronger security than the colonists at Zhu's Hope, but they were not prepared to fight their way to the colony to join forces. Ethan had assumed that the colonists were dead, and that the best strategy was to wait for ExoGeni to rescue its employees.
4. While searching inside the ExoGeni headquarters, Shepard did find one surviving staff member who had stayed behind. What was the name of the ExoGeni employee found in the geth-occupied headquarters?

Answer: Lizbeth Baynham

Lizbeth was daughter of Juliana Baynham, who was with Ethan Jeong at the way station with the other ExoGeni survivors. Lizbeth told Shepard about the Thorian and the experiments that ExoGeni was conducting on Feros. Lizbeth disagreed with the experiments and stayed behind during the evacuation to send the data on the Thorian to Earth. The geth jammed all communications before she could get her message out, though, and she became trapped in the building.

Gavin Hossle was a freelance scientist working at ExoGeni. He was originally with Ethan Jeong and the other ExoGeni survivors. Gavin gave Shepard an optional assignment. He wanted Shepard to recover some data for him from the Exogeni headquarters in exchange for credits. The terminal with his data was guarded by three krogan.
5. In order to escape the geth-occupied ExoGeni headquarters, Shepard had to deactivate a shield blocking the way. The shield was powered by the geth ship that had attached itself to the side of the building. How did Shepard remove the geth ship?

Answer: Sliced off its anchoring claw.

After figuring out that the geth were on Feros because of the Thorian, Shepard had to escape the ExoGeni headquarters. The way out was blocked by an energy shield powered by the geth ship attached to the side of the building. The ship was latched on by a series of claws and disabling even one would cause the ship to lose its purchase.

Shepard found one claw that was hooked through a pressurized door. If the pressure was low, then the door worked just fine. If the pressure was too high, the safety shutoffs would activate and the door would not close. However, there was a middle area between 31 and 34 PSI where the door would slam down and crush anything. There were five valves that could be opened to add pressure to the door: 5 PSI, 7PSI, 17 PSI, 11 PSI, and 13 PSI. There were two combinations that resulted in the necessary dangerous pressure level.

After the door slammed shut and sliced off the geth ship's anchoring claw, the ship fell off the building, the energy field blocking the exit disappeared, and the radio jamming was lifted. Joker called Shepard to report that the colonists had gone mad, and were trying to claw their way into the Normandy. It was time for Shepard to return to Zhu's Hope.
6. Feros had some new and interesting enemies to deal with. Which of the following enemies was found on Feros?

Answer: Creepers

Feros was the only main world where Shepard dealt with Thorian Creepers. Thorian Creepers could also be found on Nodacrux, which only became available for exploration after completing Feros. Enemies using the same model, known as Test Subjects, were found on the MSV Fedele when helping Garrus track down Dr. Saleon.

The Thorian Creepers were tall, organic, human-looking creatures. They could swipe with their claws or vomit on their enemies. Their vomit attack was powerful enough to kill characters with weak defenses in one hit on the Insanity difficulty setting. It was very important to be able to kill Thorian Creepers before they closed the distance to Shepard. Sniper rifles and biotic attacks were particularly useful when keeping Creepers away, and shotguns could knock them back if they got too close.

Thorian Creepers were controlled by the Thorian to defend itself with, and they fought alongside the controlled colonists. They were the primary enemy Shepard dealt with with when inside the Thorian chamber.

Rachni were primarily seen on Noveria, and a few worlds that become explorable after completing Noveria.

Husks were created out of humans, and seemed to show up sometimes around the geth, though their true origin lied with the elsewhere.

The Blue Suns were a mercenary group first featured in the "Mass Effect" novel "Revelation" by Drew Karpyshyn, the lead writer of "Mass Effect". "Revelation" was released May 1, 2007, while "Mass Effect" itself was released November 20, 2007. The Blue Suns were not featured in "Mass Effect" explicitly, though there were a number of generic mercenary enemies. The Blue Suns played a much larger role in "Mass Effect 2" as one of the galaxy's three major gangs, along with Eclipse and the Blood Pack.
7. While in the ExoGeni headquarters, Shepard learned about a creature unique to Feros, the Thorian. It could gain control of beings that inhaled its spores, such as human colonists. Where was the Thorian on Feros?

Answer: Under the colony.

ExoGeni specifically founded the colony of Zhu's Hope on top of the Thorian chamber so they could study the effects of the Thorian's spores on the unwitting colonists. All the colonists eventually fell under the Thorian's control. While the colonists claimed to be defending Feros because they had made their home there, they were actually compelled to stay by the Thorian.

The access to the Thorian's chamber was covered by a ship. When Shepard first arrived in Zhu's Hope, the colonists were very protective of the computer terminal controlling the ship. After Shepard returned from the ExoGeni headquarters, the colony was overrun with Thorian Creepers, and the colonists were hostile.

Shepard had the option to use special Thorian gas grenades to knock out the belligerent colonists. The gas grenades also had the added benefit of instantly killing any Thorian Creepers caught the blast radius, regardless of difficulty setting.
8. Fai'Dan was the leader of the human colony on Feros. Shepard encountered him one last time before confronting the Thorian itself. How did Fai'Dan die?

Answer: He committed suicide.

Fai'Dan was the leader of Zhu's Hope. He was the one named colonist that did not appear while Shepard was fighting through the colony. When Shepard got to the console to raise the ship off of the Thorian chamber entrance, Fai'Dan appeared. The Thorian was trying to make him shoot Shepard, but he resisted. In a final act of defiance, he pulled the trigger on himself.

There was another colonist, Ian Newstead, found in the tunnels below Zhu's Hope. Ian rambled and said many cryptic or senseless things to Shepard. When Shepard asked the other colonists about him, they said that Ian was sick, but that he refused help. The colonist refused to elaborate.

The ExoGeni scientists likened the Thorian's treatments of the colonists to the treatment of tools. They were kept in good shape, and not abused, provided they worked properly. A colonist that resisted was given migraines. The longer a colonist lived near the Thorian, that colonist would inhale more spores. More spores meant that the colonist would feel more compelled to follow the Thorian's wishes, and would experience stronger pain during resistance.
9. Saren needed to be able to talk to the Thorian, so he gave it one of his followers. This follower became the template that allowed the Thorian to make clones that could speak to the modern races. Who was given to the Thorian by Saren?

Answer: Shiala

Shiala was one of Benezia's follows, and followed Saren by proxy. She was given to the Thorian by Saren so the Thorian could analyze her mind and speak a modern language. The Thorian was able to make green clones of Shiala to act as its avatars when speaking to other individuals. As an asari, it could also meld minds, and allowed the Thorian to transfer the Cipher to Saren.

The Thorian sent waves of Thorian Creepers and clones of Shiala to defend itself during its fight with the Shepard. After Shepard defeated the Thorian, Shiala was released and she gave Shepard the Cipher. Shiala was no longer under the influence of either Saren or the Thorian, and asked to be allowed to help rebuild Zhu's Hope. Shepard had the option to either spare her, or terminate her if the risk of letting her go was deemed too high.

Benezia was a powerful asari matriarch, and had many followers. She went to Saren so she could steer him away from his path of destruction, but she became indoctrinated as well, as did her followers.

Liara was Shepard's asari squad member. She was a powerful biotic, and an expert on the Protheans. She was also able to join minds, like all asari. She was required for understanding the images that the Prothean beacon planted in Shepard's mind.

Sha'ira was the asari consort. She ran her business at the Presidium on the Citadel, and had many high profile clients. Many folks, including Alliance marines, saved up months worth of pay just to see her once. Oftentimes the earliest bookings were many months away.

The rachni queen on Noveria also took control of an asari body to talk to Commander Shepard.
10. After a brief chat with the Thorian through the clone, the Thorian attacked Shepard. Why did the Thorian insist on fighting?

Answer: It did not trust Shepard.

The Cipher was the essence of being a Prothean. Because Shepard viewed the Prothean beacons with a non-Prothean mind, the images were not clear, and did not make sense. The Cipher was the answer to this problem.

The Thorian had lived for thousands of years, and through many Reaper cycles. It was alive during the Prothean habitation of Feros, and knew their minds. Saren obtained the Cipher from the Thorian by giving it Shiala. Saren knew that Shepard was following him, obtaining the same clues. He sent his geth forces to kill the Thorian so Shepard could not get the Cipher. The Thorian was furious, and refused to trust anything that "scurried" ever again.
