Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some abilities are completely unique to a certain Pokémon. Which of these Pokémon does not have an exclusive ability?

Answer: Miltank

Combee's Honey Gather allows it to occasionally hold Honey after a battle. Milotic's Marvel Scale boosts its Defense whilst suffering from a status condition. Sableye's Stall allows it to move last when using a move with the same priority as the opponent's move, regardless of Speed. These abilities are exclusive to these Pokémon.

Miltank's Scrappy allows it to hit Ghost-types with Normal- and Fighting-type moves. The only other Pokémon to possess this ability is Kangaskhan.
2. Paralysis is an incredibly useful status to inflict on a fast opponent. There are a surprising number of moves that can inflict paralysis, but which of the following types does not have a move that can do so?

Answer: Bug

Lick is a Ghost-type move with a 30% chance of causing paralysis, as is the Flying-type move Bounce. Psycho Shift is a Psychic-type move that shifts the status of the user onto the foe, so paralysis can be transferred in this way.

There is no Bug-type move that causes paralysis.
3. There exist a few powerful moves that grow less powerful with consecutive hits. How many such moves exist? (Note: The effects of hold items can be ignored here.)

Answer: Four

The special moves Draco Meteor, Overheat and Psycho Boost all lower the user's Special Attack harshly upon hitting the opponent, making successive strikes less powerful. The physical move Superpower lowers the user's Attack and Defense, which has the effect of reducing the power of successive Superpowers.
4. Picture the scene - you're in a battle, and you use Mud-slap on your opponent, dealing super effective damage. Your foe responds with Amnesia, and you confidently think you have the battle in the bag. You order a second Mud-slap, but to your surprise, it only does one-third of the damage it did before! Which Pokémon are you facing?

Answer: Numel

This particular Numel has the Simple ability, which doubles any stat boosts gained in battle. Usually, Amnesia would make your second Mud-slap deal half the original damage, but since Numel effectively had two Amnesias under its belt, your Mud-slap was weakened further. Why on Earth were you using Mud-slap, anyway?!

Bidoof and Bibarel can also have the Simple ability, but neither of them are hit super effectively by Mud-slap.
5. Sandstorm is a move that causes damage to most Pokémon who are not Ground-, Rock- or Steel-type at the end of each turn. There are some abilities that always nullify Sandstorm damage - how many?

Answer: Four

Air Lock and Cloud Nine block all weather effects. Magic Guard blocks all indirect damage. There's also Sand Veil, which blocks Sandstorm damage as well as raising the evasiveness of the Pokémon in a Sandstorm.
6. In a double battle, one must often think differently when ordering attacks, especially when you consider the attacks that hit all Pokémon in battle except the user. All such moves have base power of 80 or higher.

Answer: False

Magnitude hits all Pokémon in battle except the user. Its base power can be as low as 10!
7. Some abilities have a partner - that is, they have exactly the same effect, but a different name. An example of what I mean is the pair of Air Lock and Cloud Nine. Which of the following abilities do not have such a partner?

Answer: Magma Armor

Clear Body and White Smoke both prevent stat reduction by the opponent. Huge Power and Pure Power both double Attack. Solid Rock and Filter both reduce the power of super effective move. Outside of battle, Magma Armor and Flame Body both reduce the time taken for an egg to hatch, but in battle, Magma Armor prevents freezing, whereas Flame Body can burn the opponent upon contact.
8. Some moves automatically go ahead or behind of other moves, regardless of Speed. Which move will go before any move used by the foe (not including this move)?

Answer: Helping Hand

In a double battle, Helping Hand will boost the power of the user's partner's attack by 50%. Even in a single battle, where Helping Hand has no effect, Helping Hand will still go before any other move!
9. With so many moves in the Pokémon world, there are bound to be some that overlap. Which of these moves is exactly identical to two other moves? The issue of max PP will be ignored in this question.

Answer: Iron Defense

Mirror Move is extremely similar to Copycat and Me First. However, Copycat can copy a wider range of moves than Mirror Move, and Me First only works on attacking moves if the user goes first. Cosmic Power is identical to Defend Order, and is very similar to Stockpile, but Stockpile also charges power for Spit Up and Swallow, and the stockpiled effect wears off if one of these two moves is used. Tail Whip and Leer are identical, but there is no third identical move. Iron Defense is identical to both Acid Armor and Barrier.
10. What is the maximum number of hits a single attack can deliver in one turn?

Answer: Six

I sure hope you weren't fooled by the apparent simplicity of the question! Attacks such as Fury Attack and Rock Blast always hit 2-5 times, so you may have been tempted to go for five as your answer. However, the move Beat Up hits the opponent once for each Pokémon in your party that is conscious and without a status condition. With six healthy Pokémon in your party, Beat Up will hit your opponent six times.
