Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One reason dragons are so popular is because of their limited weaknesses. For the most part, Dragon type Pokemon have how many weaknesses?

Answer: Three

Most Dragon types are weak to Ice type moves and Dragon type moves. However, some Pokemon such as Kingdra or Dialga can withstand these moves because of their dual types. Likewise, dragons can withstand most attacks just like Steel types. The downside of them being weak to Ice though is that many Dragon types such as Salamence or Garchomp are dual types in where both of them are weak to Ice, making them extremely susceptible to such attacks. Up to "Pokemon Platinum" there have only been two Dragon-types that only have one weakness and that would be Kingdra and Palkia.

These two Pokemon are Water/Dragon Pokemon making Ice not as effective and Dragons are not weak to Electric or Grass attacks. Their only weakness is Dragontype moves such as Outrage or Dragon Pulse.

In later games, Dragons were also weak to Fairy.
2. Many Dragon types have a double weakness to Ice. What was the first region to introduce a Dragon type Pokemon that did not have a double weakness to Ice?

Answer: Kanto

Each one of these regions has had a Dragon type Pokemon that did not have a double weakness to Ice, and since Kanto was the first region to be introduced that was the right answer. True the most powerful Dragon-type in Kanto, Dragonite, has a double weakness to Ice but Dratini and Dragonair, both being just pure Dragon types, are not doubly susceptible to Ice attacks. Dratini, in the Kanto region, could be acquired one of two ways.

It could either be bought at the Celadon City Game Corner or it could be found by fishing in the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City. Kingdra was the only Dragon type to be introduced in the Johto region and as stated earlier it is only weak to Dragon type moves.

In the Hoenn region Bagon, Sheldon, Latias, and Latios were not doubly susceptible to Ice.

In the Sinnoh region the only Dragon types not to be doubly weak to Ice were the legendary ones being Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina.
3. Of the four regions that have appeared, Hoenn was the one to introduce the most Dragon-type Pokemon. How many Dragon-type Pokemon did they introduce in the Hoenn region?

Answer: Nine

The closest competition was the Sinnoh region which introduced six new Dragon type Pokemon, but Hoenn released nine. These nine were Altaria, Vibrava, Flygon, Bagon, Sheldon, Salamence, Latias, Latios, and Rayquaza. Latias and Latios were originally exclusive to their own versions, Latios being found in the Ruby version and Latias being found in the Sapphire version.

In "Pokemon Emerald" you got to pick one you wished to pursue. After becoming the Pokemon League Champion, you will see a news bulliten on TV. Your mom will ask you what color the Pokemon was. If you say it was red Latias will appear, if you say it was blue Latios will appear.

These two Pokemon are like the legendary dogs that appear in the Johto region as they will try to run away as soon as you randomly encounter them.
4. Lance is one of the more popular Dragon-type trainers having appeared in both the Kanto and Johto region's Elite Four. However, because only four Dragon-type Pokemon had been introduced up to then, Lance had to improvise to have a full roster of Dragon-types. Which one of the following non-Dragon types has Lance NOT used in his lineup?

Answer: Tyranitar

Larvitar has been known as the Dratini of the Johto region as its first form Larvitar doesn't appear until the last stage of the game, but it is one of the more powerful ones once it evolves into Pupitar which then evolves into Tyranitar. Lance's Dragon types have included Dragonair and Dragonite, but surprisingly not Kingdra.

However, the leader of the only gym to use primarily Dragon types, Clair, does. Gyarados can learn some Dragon moves such as Twister, Dragon Dance, and Dragon Rage. However, it is a Water/Flying type that evolves from the incredibly weak Magikarp at level 20. Aerodactyl is a Rock/Flying type and can be resurrected from Old Amber either on the Cinnabar Island in the Kanto region or in Orreburgh City in the Sinnoh Region. Charizard, along with Pikachu, is one of the most well-known Pokemon being the final evolution form of Charmander, the fire starter in the Kanto region. Lance was replaced by another Dragon-type trainer named Drake in the Hoenn region, and then in the Sinnoh region, Dragon-types did not appear in the Elite Four.

The only Dragon-type used was Cynthia's Garchomp.
5. In "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pokemon Pearl," before getting the National Pokedex, the only non-legendary dragon types you could chose from were Gible, Gabite, and Garchomp. In "Pokemon Platinum" one more non-legendary Dragon type was added. What was this Pokemon?

Answer: Altaria

Altaria evolves from Normal/Flying type Swablu. Altaria is also used by Winona a Flying type Gym Leader in the Hoenn region. In "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pokemon Pearl" the other Dragon type you could choose from was either Dialga a Dragon/Steel type or Palkia a Water/Dragon type depending on which version you chose.

In "Pokemon Platinum" Giratina a Ghost/Dragon type was the legendary dragon that could be caught. Giratina could be caught in "Pokemon Diamond" and "Pokemon Pearl" after getting the National Pokedex, just like Dialga and Palkia can be caught in "Pokemon Platinum" after getting the National Pokedex. Each one of these legendary Dragon-types has its own unique move. Dialga knows Roar of Time, Palkia knows Spatial Rend, and Giratina knows Shadow Force. Giratina came in two forms in "Pokemon Platinum" if caught in the Distortion World or holding the Griseous Orb, Giratina is in its Origin Form which has the ability Levitate making it immune to Ground-type moves. If caught in the regular world or not holding the Griseous Orb, Giratina is in its Altered Form which has the ability Pressure which makes an opponent use two PP (Power Points) when it uses a move rather than one.

Many legendary Pokemon have the ability Pressure, but others such as Weavile have the ability too.
6. Two Pokemon, although not Dragon types, are referred to as Dragon Pokemon. These Pokemon appeared in the only Dragon-type gym in the "Pokemon" series and although not owned by the leader, their evolved form was. What is the name of the first Pokemon of this series?

Answer: Horsea

Horsea and Seadra are Water types but they still make a brief appearance in the Blackthorn City Gym. They are not as prevalent as the Dratinis and Dragonairs in the gym as Seadra only appears twice and Horsea once. The leader of the gym, Clair, owns their evolved form Kingdra which is a Dragon type but it also keeps its Water type therefore only making it weak to Dragon moves. Kingdra was one of the few Pokemon introduced in the Johto region that can only be obtained by trading a Pokemon with an item.

In this case, if you trade a Seadra that holds a Dragon Scale, Seadra will evolve into Kingdra. In the Johto series these three Pokemon could only learn one Dragon-type move, naturally, and that was Twister. As they progressed through the series though, they were also able to learn Dragon Dance, which raises Speed and Attack, and Dragon Pulse.

The Horsea family appeared in every game of the handheld games until the Sinnoh region, when they could only be captured after getting the National Pokedex.
7. Although this Pokemon is not a Dragon type, it was released in the United States via Toys 'R Us with the three signature moves from the three legendary dragons in the Sinnoh region. What was this Pokemon?

Answer: Arceus

All of these Pokemon are legendary, and three of them can only be obtained by special download events. Regigigas can be caught in the Snowpoint Temple in Snowpoint City while having Regirock, Regice, and Registeel in your party. The Arceus that was distributed by Toys 'R Us in the United States, is supposedly to be involved in the SoulSilver and HeartGold versions of Pokemon. Arceus came with the moves Roar of Time (Dialga), Spatial Rend (Palkia), Shadow Force (Giratina), and Judgment, a move exclusive only to Arceus. Arceus, along with it's move Judgment, is so rare that it is not even listed in the strategy guides. Arceus is known to be the creator of the universe.

The many plates that you will find around the Sinnoh region, when held by Arceus as an item, changes Arceus' type so in a sense it can be a Dragon type, but it's original form is a Normal type.

The plates will also change what type of attack Judgment is. Shaymin and Regigigas, along with a Dragonite, were all released by Toys 'R Us in the United States but did not have the three legendary dragon exclusive moves.
8. How many Dragon-type Pokemon did not start out as a Dragon-type before evolving?

Answer: Three

Kingdra, Vibrava, Altaria are the Pokemon that were some other type before evolving into a Dragon type. Kingdra evolves from a Seadra which is a Water type. Vibrava evolves from a Trapinch which is a Ground type. Altaria evolves from a Swablu which is a Normal and Flying type.

While Kingdra and Altaria are in their final forms Vibrava can continue to evolve into a Flygon which is also a Ground/Dragon type.
9. A special Dragonite was released by Toys 'R Us via wireless download. What item was this Dragonite holding?

Answer: Yache Berry

A Yache Berry was one of the new berries introduced in the Sinnoh region. This series of berries weaken the power of a super-effective move and a Yache Berry weakens the power of a super-effective Ice move. Dragonite has a double weakness to Ice, however sometimes these berries are not enough.

In a video of the Pokemon championships available for watching at the GTS a Garchomp is hit with an Ice Beam by a Lapras. Even though it has a Yache Berry, Garchomp faints in one hit. There are 17 of these Berries including the Chilan Berry.

A Chilan Berry is different because no Pokemon is weak against Normal type attacks so it just weakens any normal type attack. The Dragonite that was released is unique in the sense that it is at level fifty. It's previous form Dragonair does not evolve into Dragonite until level 55.
10. I'm going to end the quiz asking about one of my personal Dragon-types Salamence. Every Pokemon is only allowed to have four moves, and my Salamence is no exception. Which one of the following moves that I have given my Salamence is not super-effective against one of it's weaknesses?

Answer: Fly

One strategy I like to implement, and Cynthia does the same thing, is giving Pokemon moves that can conquer their weaknesses. Both Steel and Rock moves are effective against Ice types. On a side note Fighting and Fire moves are also effective against Ice types. Because dragons are normal against Rock type moves and Salamence is a Flying type it is weak to Rock. Steel moves are effective against Rock. Dragon types are also weak to Dragon type moves in which Dragonbreath comes into play which has a 30% chance of causing Paralysis.
