Five years before, he had been accused and convicted of murdering a young girl by throwing her off of a bridge. Mia is the defense attorney, and the prosecutor is none other than Miles Edgeworth. Six months before this case, Gumshoe had been promoted to a detective.

While rushing to the courtroom with Phoenix on the phone, Gumshoe says he has three very important pieces of evidence needed for Phoenix to find out the truth. But, as he is not very good at multi-tasking, he runs into a telephone pole. The three pieces of evidence, later brought by Franziska with the good news that he's fine, are a pistol, a bellboy uniform, and a video tape.
