Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The PlayStation wasn't supposed to be the standalone system it turned out to be. It was supposed to be an add-on for which popular system of the time?

Answer: Super Nintendo

The PlayStation resulted in a deal between Sony and Nintendo gone sour. They couldn't agree on how to split the revenue and Nintendo decided to partner with Phillips instead. The big-wigs decided to salvage the project and make it a standalone console.

Many consider this to be one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes. The other consoles did have a CD add-on of some kind, but their performance was mediocre at best.
2. According to designer Teiyu Goto, why did the buttons on the PlayStation controllers have shapes instead of the usual letters?

Answer: To represent different functions

Goto said that each of the four shapes had a purpose:

The Green Triangle was to represent going into the person's point of view, or first person.
The Pink Square represented the button used to bring up menus.
The red circle and blue X represented yes and no, respectively.
3. When did the PlayStation launch in North America?

Answer: September 9th, 1995

The PlayStation first launched in Japan on December 4th, 1994, followed by North America on September 9th, 1995, then its European launch on September 29th, 1995 and finally its Australian debut in November 15th, 1995.

While some games like "Ridge Racer" and "Rayman" were regarded as instant classics that still hold up well even today, there were some stinkers like "Street Fighter: The Movie" that were best left forgotten.
4. During a conference, Steve Race was asked to come up and give a brief speech about the PlayStation. What did he say that got the crowd riled up?

Answer: The price of the PlayStation at launch in North America

This was during the first E3 which was held in Los Angeles, California in 1995. Race simply walked up to the microphone, said "$299" and stepped down. This was all it took for the crowd to go wild.

Meanwhile, the Sega Saturn was priced between $399 and $449. For many gamers, this was the beginning of the end of Sega's place in the console market.
5. After the launch of the Nintendo 64 with its ground-breaking analog stick, Sony decided to one-up Nintendo with its newer controllers. First was the Dual Analog which featured two analog sticks, and then the Dualshock which was the same thing but with vibrators built in. What was the first PlayStation 1 game released that absolutely needed a Dual Analog controller of some kind?

Answer: Ape Escape

Most games didn't need analog support although the analog sticks were compatible.

"Ape Escape" was developed to incorporate the use of the analog sticks from the ground up. The left stick was used for precision movement while the right stick was used for various gadgets to capture the escaped apes. Oddly, the D-Pad was used to move the camera.
6. How many logo designs were made before settling on the one that would become synonymous with the system?

Answer: More than thirty

When the team was deciding on the logo all the way back in 1994, there were over three dozen (thirty-six) initial designs to choose from. The four colors symbolized joy, passion and excellence.
7. Counting all regions and excluding compilations, how many PlayStation games were released that used five disks?

Answer: Two

The first game to use five disks was "Riven: The Sequel to Myst" which was released in North America and Europe and was a port of the puzzle adventure game originally released on Mac and Windows. The second one was "Tokimeki Memorial 2", a dating simulator released only in Japan. Unlike "Riven", it was a PlayStation exclusive.
8. Many people consider Crash Bandicoot as the unofficial mascot of the PlayStation 1 and his games received critical acclaim and high sales. However, Ken Kutaragi, the head developer of the PlayStation, HATED him. Why?

Answer: He believed Crash was too immature

Ken Kutaragi wanted the PlayStation to appeal to a more mature audience than the Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 and felt that Crash Bandicoot undermined that appeal. He wasn't too fond of Polygon Man either.
9. Which video game company left Nintendo altogether for the PlayStation?

Answer: Squaresoft

During the Nintendo 64's lifespan, Squaresoft didn't make a single game for the system. When you compare the N64's cartridge space of 64MB to the PlayStation disks space of 700MB and how much cheaper the PlayStation disks were, it's easy to see why.
10. As awesome as the PlayStation was, nothing lasts forever. The system was discontinued on March 23, 2006 worldwide. How many units were sold?

Answer: Over 100 million

At the end of its lifespan, the PlayStation sold 102.49 million units worldwide. It was the first video game system to reach the 100,000,000 mark. According to the "Guinness World Records" published on December 21st, 2018, it placed fourth with the most consoles sold, behind the Game Boy with 118.69 million units, the Nintendo DS with 154.9 million units, and the PlayStation 2 with 157.68 million units.
