Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Rising Sun
Answer: Medal of Honor
'Rising Sun' is the fifth entry in the 'Medal of Honor' series, released in late 2003. The game, set in the Pacific theatre, wasn't received as well as some of the previous 'Medal of Honor' games but the opening missions, Day of Infamy and Pearl Harbor, were praised by players and critics alike.
2. Frontline
Answer: Medal of Honor
'Medal of Honour: Frontline' (PS2) is a classic first-person shooter that takes gamers on a journey through war-torn Western Europe. Playing as soldier James "Jimmy" Patterson, 'Frontline' begins with the Normandy landings; the opening level - where the player navigates from boat to bunker via beach - was highly regarded by critics and frequently compared to the opening of Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' (1998).
3. European Assault
Answer: Medal of Honor
'Medal of Honor: European Assault' (2005) follows the journey of Lieutenant William Holt through France, north Africa, Belgium and the Soviet Union (USSR). With some rather long levels, along with the time-honoured tradition of "no checkpoints", 'European Assault' was a challenging game that took players to the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of the Bulge.
4. Vanguard
Answer: Medal of Honor
March 2007 saw the tenth instalment of the 'Medal of Honor' franchise released to the public - 'Vanguard'. By this point, the series was regarded as somewhat losing its way and 'Vanguard', which was only released on PlayStation 2 and Wii, was not deemed a success.
It was the final iteration of 'Medal of Honor' released for PlayStation 2, with 'Medal of Honor: Airborne' being released for PlayStation 3 later in 2007. With the PS3 coming to the fore in late 2006, it is perhaps unsurprising that 'Vanguard' was somewhat uninspired.
5. The Wrath of Cortex
Answer: Crash Bandicoot
'Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex' was a release from the early 2000s; players had to navigate thirty levels (obtaining the usual gems, crystals and relics along the way) and defeat five bosses, including the game's bad-guy-in-chief, Doctor Neo Cortex.
The game undeniably had some fun features such as the "atlasphere" (basically a hamster ball for bandicoots) but the feeling from critics was that the 'Crash Bandicoot' franchise was at risk of becoming tired and derivative.
6. Warped
Answer: Crash Bandicoot
'Crash Bandicoot: Warped' was the third release in the famous series of games from developers, Naughty Dog. This instalment was for the original PlayStation (PS1 or PSX). By this point - 1998 - the franchise was successfully riding the crest of a wave and 'Crash Bandicoot: Warped' became one of the best-selling games of all time for the PS1. Physicists may enjoy the name of one of the featured antagonists, Doctor Nefarious Tropy aka Dr N Tropy.
7. Cortex Strikes Back
Answer: Crash Bandicoot
'Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back' is the 1997 sequel to the original 'Crash Bandicoot' release that started it all back in 1996. Whilst there wasn't a great deal of innovation in gameplay between the first and second 'Crash Bandicoot' games, there was quite a jump in the quality of graphics and an improvement in control. Working for the usual nemesis, Doctor Neo Cortex, was Doctor Nitrus Brio (N. Brio), a "mutagenetic" scientist with bolts in his head - dodge his green potions!
8. N. Sane Trilogy
Answer: Crash Bandicoot
'Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy' is a remastered version of the original trilogy in the 'Crash Bandicoot' franchise: 'Crash Bandicoot', 'Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back' and 'Crash Bandicoot: Warped'. The game was released for PlayStation 4 (PS4) in 2017, over twenty years on from the date of release of the original game back in 1996. Crash Bandicoot's sibling, Coco, is able to play more of the levels than was the case in the original games (traditionally, Coco was tied to certain levels).
9. Vice City
Answer: Grand Theft Auto
'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City' (2002), featuring the criminal exploits of Tommy Vercetti, is a visually appealing game. The look and feel of Vice City itself takes inspiration from Miami, Florida with the extensive use of pink (unmistakably Miami), palm trees (real and on shirts) and art deco buildings. Tony Vercetti was voiced by Ray Liotta, who portrayed mobster Henry Hill in the 1990 gangster classic, 'Goodfellas'.
10. San Andreas
Answer: Grand Theft Auto
To put it simply, 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' raised the bar. It redefined what good looks like, not just for its own genre but for video games generally. The gameplay itself - with themes of gun crime, prostitution and gang violence (amongst many others) - naturally courted controversy but the execution of the game is indisputably worthy of admiration. One of the greatest enhancements to the overall player experience came from the elimination of loading screens when moving from one sector to another.
This was a game-changer, particularly for such a large map, as it allowed for greater immersion than was possible in predecessors such as 'Vice City'.
11. Liberty City Stories
Answer: Grand Theft Auto
'Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories' was made available in 2005 for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) before being released in 2006 for PlayStation 2. 'Liberty City Stories' sees the return of mafioso, Toni Cipriani, a major character from 'Grand Theft Auto III' (2001). In terms of the timeline, 'Liberty City Stories' is a prequel to 'Grand Theft Auto III'.
12. IV
Answer: Grand Theft Auto
'Grand Theft Auto IV' was released for the PlayStation 3 console in 2008, four years after 'San Andreas' took the gaming world by storm back in 2004. Based in Liberty City - an interpretation of New York City - gameplay follows Niko Bellic and his involvement in the city's criminal underworld. 'Grand Theft Auto IV' continued the well-established third-person perspective approach and also continued to be controversial (how could it not?). One of the main talking points centred on the explicit ability to drink and drive.
13. Chamber of Secrets
Answer: Harry Potter
The 'Chamber of Secrets' is the second instalment in the world-famous series of 'Harry Potter' novels by J. K. Rowling. Gameplay involves a mixture of learning the fundamentals of wizardry in various classes and exploration of the castle and grounds of Hogwarts. Find out what resides within the chamber and learn how to fly in this game released in the early 2000s.
14. Quidditch World Cup
Answer: Harry Potter
'Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup' is a fantasy sport offering inspired by the magical game of quidditch from J. K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter' novels. Gameplay entails competing for the Inter-House Quidditch Cup at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, or if you prefer something more international in flavour you can instead compete at the Quidditch World Cup! As well as being playable on the PlayStation 2, the game was released on other platforms including Xbox and GameCube.
15. Goblet of Fire
Answer: Harry Potter
'Goblet of Fire' is book number four in the 'Harry Potter' collection, a series that still enchants audiences decades on since its initial publication. The game for PlayStation 2 is action-based and levels can be selected via interaction with the pensieve, a basin that Dumbledore used to store his memories.
16. Half-Blood Prince
Answer: Harry Potter
'Half-Blood Prince' is book six of seven in the 'Harry Potter' series and the fact that this game was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2009, is a testament to how popular, successful and enduring the console proved to be. Naturally the game makes use of props such as "The Marauder's Map", an item that is prominent in the film, but despite the enthusiasm for the franchise and its faithfulness to the film, the 'Half-Blood Prince' video game wasn't particularly well-received.
