Of the two Generation III remakes of the original games, Sandshrew can only be caught in "Pokémon Leaf Green". In "Fire Red", Ekans can be caught on Routes 4, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 23. Hitmonchan does not become available until the player reaches Saffron City, in which victory over the Trainers at the Fighting Dojo offers the player a choice between taking a Hitmonlee or a Hitmonchan. Machop first becomes available for capture in Rock Tunnel. Poliwrath, who actually is a Fighting-type Pokémon as well as a Water-type Pokémon, cannot be caught in the wild, but it's pre-evolved forms Poliwag and Poliwhirl can, in various water areas.

Before obtaining the National Pokédex, Tangela can only be caught in the wild on Route 21, on a little patch of grass south of Pallet Town. It can also be obtained on Cinnabar Island, by trading for a Venonat. Oddish can be caught in various places around the Pokémon world, but is both Grass-type and Poison-type. Chikorita, although a pure Grass-type Pokémon, cannot be caught before obtaining the National Pokédex. Parasect can be caught in the wild in the Safari Zone (and in Cerulean Cave after obtaining the National Pokédex) or evolved from Paras, but both Paras and Parasect are both Bug-type and Grass-type Pokémon.

Dragon Rage, in "Pokémon Fire Red", can only be learned by Charmander, Charmeleon, Charizard, Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite and Gyarados, and always does 40HP damage. Sonicboom does 20HP damage. Super Fang always damages the opponent with a damage level equivalent to half their HP. Seismic Toss always damages the opponent with a damage level equivalent to the user's level.
