Answer: kappa

The kappa is essentially a monster created to explain the appearance of a drowned body. It is child-sized and slimy, with webbed appendages and a beak-like mouth. The crown of its head holds water, and a kappa will lose its power if that water ever dries out. Golduck, while primarily based on a duck, is said to be mistaken for a kappa and has many of a kappa's fiendish touches.

Its appendages are clawed and webbed, and it is bipedal and about the size of a fully grown person. Though it is a pure water type, it can learn many psychic attacks and confounding moves, perhaps a reference to the kappa's supernatural powers.

Answer: white marsh

The Bai Ze ("white marsh") is a mythical beast from Chinese legends. It has a bovine appearance overall, with several eyes and horns, and intelligent enough to understand speech. As illustrated by Gusukuma Seihou in the 17th Century, it is white with a black horn on one side of its face. Absol is similar in appearance, being mainly white with black hilights which include the sickle-like horn on one side of its face.

The Bai Ze is said to have predicted a plague; Absol is said to be able to predict disasters as well.

Answer: world turtle

The world turtle is a divine being present in several world myths, and was advanced as an ancient explanation for what held the Earth up. The earliest of these myths is believed to be the Indian turtle Kurma, based on giant turtle fossils found there. Torterra appears as a large, slow, heavy turtle described as the Continent Pokemon.

As might be expected from a world turtle, it is a grass/ground type. Torterra is green and brown, and so large that a tree grows on one side of its thick shell. It is sometimes mistaken for a moving forest.

Answer: Misdreavus

Nukekubi appear to be people by day, but by night, their heads detach from their bodies. They attack people and feed on blood, but must return to their bodies by dawn or die. Misdreavus is a ghost that is essentially a severed head with a neck. It tends to play mischievous (but not deadly) pranks on people, like screaming at people and yanking their hair without warning. Nukekubi cover up the red line around their necks with things like necklaces. Misdreavus appears to wear a necklace of red pearls around its neck.

Answer: Emboar

Emboar is a fire/fighting pig and one of the starter Pokemon available in the Unova region. Physically, it is large, slow, and has gold swirls across its chest. It is able to use Heat Crash, a fire move whose power depends on the weight difference between it and its opponent. Zhu Bajie is a pig demon that appears in the classic story "Journey To the West".

He has many flaws and often shows jealousy towards Sun Wukong while unsuccessfully trying to beat him. Emboar's type, style, and origin are thus very similar to Infernape.

Answer: dragon

Altaria is a sweet blue bird with fluffy cloud-wings, and while clearly a flying type, its dragon type may seem a bit unusual. As it turns out, it was based off of the Peng, a large Chinese bird in the vein of a Roc, described as having wings all over the sky.

The Peng is sometimes depicted with reptilian features, which would explain its part-dragon type. Altaria primarily learns normal, flying, and dragon type moves, though its fluffy wings are also alluded to by its ability to learn Cotton Guard.

Answer: Trevenant

If you've seen "Princess Mononoke", Kodama were the small white forest spirits that appeared in the movie. Another Pokemon -- Celebi -- may be based on such Kodama, but in legends, they are a little more dangerous. Kodama live in old, large trees that may otherwise appear to be ordinary trees, but cutting down such a tree would leave you cursed. Trevenant is a tree possessed by a spirit, and is not surprisingly a ghost/grass type.

It punishes people who harm forests. It moves around on six root-like legs and is not very fast, but it is admittedly faster than your average tree.

Answer: Slowpoke

Sazae-oni are demonic turban snails that sometimes appear to be beautiful women and are known to do things like bite off mens' testicles. That wonderful thought puts a little more context to the symbiotic relationship that Shellder has with the slow, doofy Slowpoke. Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro when a Shellder clamps down on its tail. Slowpoke can instead become Slowking with the use of a King's Rock; in that case, the Shellder clamps onto its head and acts as a crown. Either way, the Shellder injects toxins into its host.

As Mega Slowbro, the Shellder becomes so large that it engulfs Slowbro, acting as a sort of hardened armor.

Answer: long and slender body

Oriental style dragons are distinctly different than European dragons. They are long and slender, and are able to fly despite not having wings. Rayquaza is similar in those regards to an Oriental dragon, though it lacks the hind legs that such dragons normally have. Oriental dragons can control natural forces and are seen as benevolent beings. Rayquaza mediated the battle between Groudon and Kyogre and is capable of using elemental attacks (Flamethrower, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam) and controlling weather conditions with Air Lock and/or Delta Stream.

It has lived for hundreds of millions of years in Earth's upper atmosphere.

Answer: Kyurem

The story of the opposing ideals did not end with the splitting of Reshiram and Zekrom. After that, the original dragon's corpse rose up and became the mummified-looking ice dragon known as Kyurem. After the other two dragons were claimed in "Black" and "White", Kyurem became the main character in "Black 2" and "White 2". Team Plasma, which itself split in two factions, attempted to use Kyurem's power to try and take over Unova. N returned to fight them with the dragon he claimed, but there was a catch: Kyurem was able to absorb the dragon and become Black Kyurem (with Zekrom) or White Kyurem (with Reshiram).

Its combined forms perhaps hint at what the original dragon looked like.
