Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you don't search Victor Simms, you lose. What happens?

Answer: He swallows the whole packet of cocaine and dies

Police procedure says that you should always search your suspects before you book them. In this case, if you don't, Victor put the packet of cocaine in his mouth to conceal it. He accidently swallows the whole thing and dies. As a result, Sonny gets suspended. If this seems a tad ridiculous to you, you're not alone! Unfortunately, Jim Walls bases some of these puzzles on experiences he has seen in real life when he was a cop. Thus, this sort of thing probably does happen in real life.

The "knife" thing happens in "Police Quest 3."
2. In the VGA version of the game, what do you see if you die (unless you die in a car accident)?

Answer: Skull

When you die in the VGA version, the screen goes completely dark and you hear some loud heavy metal guitar music, then you see a skull and hear someone laughing in a dark voice. Then you see the message telling you what you did wrong, accompanied with the standard options of Restore, Restart, Quit. Some of the death messages are kind of rude. For example, whenever you attempt to arrest an armed and dangerous felon without calling for back-up, Sonny will get shot and the ensuing death message will be pretty mean. For these reasons, this is probably my favorite adventure game to die in. It's not for the faint of heart though.

The other three choices are for the other "Police Quest" games.
3. How does Sonny break Marie out of jail?

Answer: He asks her to help to take down the "Death Angel"

Marie ends up in prison after ignoring Sonny's warning about Operation "Trick Trap," which is something the cops set up to take down the prostitutes in the city. Because of her crush on Sonny, she calls him for his help to break out of prison. He promises to do it on the condition that she help him take down the Death Angel at the hotel since she has an important connection there.
4. What happens with Jason Taselli after he breaks out of prison?

Answer: He gets killed by the "Death Angel"

When Jason Taselli breaks out of prison, everyone panics. People know he's on the FBI Most Wanted list and they think he's the "Death Angel". Later in the game, his dead body is found in a river at Cotton Cove. People are relieved that he's gone, but scared that there's someone even worse in town.
5. When you take a criminal to jail, what must you do before entering the jail?

Answer: Put your gun in the locker

There are gun lockers for the cops outside of every jail. The cop must always put his gun in the locker. In this game, if you don't do so, the criminal will steal your gun once you remove the handcuffs and shoot you. Future games are nicer about this, you just have to pay a fine and leave your gun with the jailer. These games were meant to emphasize the importance of following Police Procedure and what happens if you don't.

Obviously removing the handcuffs before getting the criminal in jail is a bad idea. You do have to look up the code number of the crime, but you can do that after you get the guy in prison.
6. It is discovered that the Death Angel runs an illegal gambling ring at what hotel?

Answer: Hotel Delphoria

The Death Angel runs a gambling ring in the Hotel Delphoria in the northwest part of town. Sonny, Marie and others are asked to go there to take down that gambling ring and the Death Angel.
7. Which of the following is NOT part of Sonny's disguise?

Answer: Pretending to be married to a prostitute

In order to take down the gambling ring, Sonny must go undercover and disguise himself as an eager gambler just recently released from prison. His partner Laura Watt picks out a disguise for him, telling him that he needs to go to the hotel dressed in a white suit and that he needs to bleach his hair white. Sonny goes to the men's locker room to get those two things taken care of. When he gets to the hotel, he goes there under the identity of "Jimmy Lee Banksten." He meets Marie at the bar, who refers to him as "Whitey" and pretends that he is a long-time best friend. She introduces him to the bartender. the bartender then tells him about an illegal gambling ring, which he pretends to be eager to be part of. The bartender then takes him to the gambling table, where he gets to play poker with the Death Angel and some of the other drug dealers in town.

Although he pretends to be friends with Marie, they do not need to pretend to be married.
8. What can you do in the EGA version that you can't do in the VGA version (although this will end the game)?

Answer: Strip naked anywhere

In the EGA version of the game you can type "take off clothes" anywhere you want and Sonny will do it but the game will end. This happens even if you go to the shower, turn on the water, and type "take off clothes." To make Sonny take a shower you have to make him get his towel from his locker. Then he will automatically take a shower.
9. What can you do in the VGA version that you can't do in the EGA version (although this will end the game)?

Answer: Have sex with Marie

When Sonny and Marie get to the hotel room, you can click the hand icon on Marie and they will have sex. They spend so much time having sex that Sonny misses the poker game and the operation is blown.
10. What else can you do in the VGA version that you can't do in the EGA version (although this might end the game depending on your choice)?

Answer: Skip the poker game, but win or lose anyway

In the EGA version of the game, you HAVE to play poker and you HAVE to win on your own. This was common in Sierra adventure games at the time, as several of them had a feature that involved gambling. "Leisure Suit Larry" and "Space Quest" also had gambling, and in the AGI versions of all those games you had to do the gambling there was no way past it. Some of these games gave you options to skip past the gambling in their VGA remakes. In the "Space Quest" remake, there is an electronic widget found early in the game that can be used to rig the slot machine later (so if you answered "electronic widget" here, you have confused "Police Quest" with "Space Quest"). Thus, the "Space Quest" did the best job of improving upon this feature as you could rig the gambling and still beat the game with a perfect score.

"Police Quest" didn't improve this feature quite as much as "Space Quest" did. When you get to the gambling part, the VGA "Police Quest" asks you if you want to do the gambling. In addition to "yes" it gives you the options of "No, but win anyway" or "No, but lose anyway." If you say "No, but win anyway, "You can skip the gambling and move on with the real game. However, unlike in "Space Quest" doing this in "Police Quest" forfeits points. You get 15 points each time you win a poker game without skipping it, and you have to play poker twice which means that if you skip the poker, you forfeit 30 points altogether. On the other hand, if you choose "No, but lose anyway," you not only lose the poker game, you die. If you choose this, Sonny automatically goes back up to his bedroom and calls lieutenant Morgan, telling him that he lost the poker game and they didn't invite him back. Morgan then tells Sonny to return to the police station and demotes him back to traffic cop. The operation is blown and the game ends.

On the bright side, even if you forfeit points, at least Jim Walls gave you a way to get past the gambling, which Al Lowe never did. Two remakes of "Leisure Suit Larry" and not one version of the game has a way to skip past the gambling. The gambling even reappears in "Leisure Suit Larry 5" and you can't skip it there either. In fairness, this could be because "Leisure Suit Larry" is supposed to be the most adult game of all the Sierra games and gambling is an "adult" thing to do.
11. How does Sonny's cover get blown?

Answer: One of the gamblers recognizes him from the newspaper

Sonny Bonds' name and face appears in the newspaper because he gets voted "Cop of the Year." Hence, all of the disguising in the world cannot stop his face from looking like the face in the newspaper. One of the gamblers reads the paper, recognizes him, and informs the Death Angel.
12. What is the name of the Death Angel?

Answer: Jesse Bains

Jesse runs the gambling ring, is the leader of the drug cartel in town, and he murders anyone who gets in his way or threatens to. This is why he is known as the Death Angel and is the main villain in this game.
13. In the EGA game, the bartender is a man named Woodrow Roberts. In the VGA game, the bartender is a woman named Alexandra Parker. How does this create a continuity error for a future "Police Quest" game?

Answer: Woodrow Roberts gets murdered in "Police Quest 2"

"Police Quest 2" is subtitled "Vengeance". It is called that because the plot of that game involves Jesse Bains trying to kill all the people who took him down in "Police Quest 1". One of the people who testified against him is Woodrow Roberts. Thus Bains kills Roberts in "Police Quest 2". Bains killing Woodrow Roberts in "Police Quest 2" makes no sense if Alexandra Parker is the bartender. "Police Quest" has more continuity errors than probably any other series of adventure games.

This one could have been resolved if there were a remake of "Police Quest 2" in which Alexandra Parker gets murdered instead of Woodrow Roberts. It is possible that they did plan on remaking "Police Quest 2" just like they planned on remaking all the text parser games, but like all the other ones, plans for this remake were scrapped because all the remakes Sierra did of the first game in each series were poor sellers.
14. Which if the following is NOT something you have to do before taking Jesse Bains down?

Answer: Kill Gene Bamboni

In order for Jesse Bains to invite you into his penthouse, you have to win two games of poker to earn his respect. If you don't the game will end. After winning the first game of poker you must go back to your room and call Lieutenant Morgan. Then he will send you some back-up. Then you wait in your room until your back-up arrives. Your back-up will give you a little voice transmitter. Then when you win the second game of poker, Jesse Bains will invite you to his penthouse. While in there, you will have a moment to look at the phone in his room and note the room number. Then you must use your radio transmitter to call your back-up. Your cover will be blown no matter what because one of the poker players recognizes Sonny's face from the newspaper and inform Jesse Bains. So you better be prepared for that or he will shoot you.

If you don't call lieutenant Morgan after winning the first game, you will regret it. Not only will Jessie shoot you, but you'll get a particularly mean death message.

If you call for your back-up, but don't look at the phone in the penthouse before calling your back-up, Sonny won't tell them what room he is in. Therefore, they won't be able to find him. Actually, they will find him eventually. They'll find him at the bottom of the river at Cotton Cove with a bullet wound in his chest, same spot where they found Jason Taselli. On the bright side, at least the death message will be nicer than if you never called Lieutenant Morgan for any back-up.

Gene Bamboni is one of the poker players. You won't be able to kill him.
15. How does the game end (if you don't die or get a bad ending)?

Answer: The back-up shoots Jessie but doesn't kill him

Sonny can't shoot Jessie because he went to the hotel undercover and left his gun behind. The back-up shoots Jessie. He somehow survives but is badly wounded enough that he can be taken to prison. The game ends with Sonny being celebrated as a hero.
